Ineos Grenadier New Zealand owner first impressions.

Фильм және анимация

First 600km in my new Grenadier! some initial impressions.Sorry I'm not a youtuber, so this is just a very rough video...no finesse whatsoever. Hopefully, prospective owners will find useful.
The car is a Trial Master diesel. withe leather seats, privacy glass, safari windows, checker plates, steelies, and a few other goodies.
With respect to the bulkhead, I meant to say that it's closer to the driver, meaning you have to have your left leg positioned slightly further towards the seat than usual. I.e you can't stretch your left leg out as much as you can on most "regular" cars!
Since I made the video, I've been playing around with standing starts. It seems the best technique (for me) is to use a really gentle throttle. The car actually builds speed faster than you think. If you floor it, it really does sound quite unrefined and I don't find it particularly enjoyable. The car doesn't hold gears much at all.....you're in 5th when most cars would still be in 2nd or 3rd. It takes some getting used to!

nice car, congratulations. No matter what people say, they know better anyway. I'll be testing a Grenadier in a few weeks. I have worked in the auto industry for many years and see many of the car manufacturers' quirks. The grenadier is particularly interesting to me because it is so simply built without any frills. I wish you a lot of fun and greetings from Germany.

I've driven some Jeeps when in the US a few years ago and couldn't live with the very sketchy build quality. They are great at what they do, but not in the same league as the grenadier. in terms of build I think this point is missed on some of the reviews. They are so busy pointing out the flaws (lack of cupholders and usb ports....seriously?) they forget to mention how solid and high quality the components are. I truly believe this thing will outlast me!

How re you supposed to read all those switches on the roof when you are actually driving? It’s a lovely car Stuart and I very much hope it’s as solid as a rock, which is all that matters for an off road car like this. In 1980 I had brand new a Toyota Land Cruiser which was astonishing after the useless Land Rover I’d had before. Reliability is everything, as is door sealing against desert dust, and working everything that’s included. Very best wishes and thanks for the info.

Hi.....there is absolutely nothing wrong with the steering/alignment on my car. It seem to be bang on, as supplied. I had an extended drive this weekend and the steering and overall drive of this car is exceptional for the type of vehicle it is. My only remaining observation is the initial throttle response on take off from a complete stop. I would imagine a remap could cure this quite easily, but in reality, I'm finding it less of an issue as I drive it more.

I’ve tested this vehicle at our local dealer and delved a bit deeper than what the ads and owners suggest. Unfortunately, my impression is rather negative. I hope this brand doesn’t disappear from Australia in 2024, but I can’t say anything encouraging about a car with BMW components. What I definitely know is that I wouldn’t dare take it on a serious off-road journey or a long trip. After careful consideration, I chose the LC 70 series.

I actually had the car at a 4x4 outfitter who is almost exclusively toyota 70 series and landcruiser 80,100,200 and 300 focused. He was extremely impressed with the Grenadier. His view is that it is much better built than the Toyota vehicles and has a huge amount of in-built capability and customisation options. Enjoy your 70 series!

I don't need months to understand a car as a user. This is my impression as a professional driver with an engineering degree and extensive driving experience in both Australia and Europe across various car brands. I simply don't like this car, and it's not just a first impression. The issues include its strange steering, unusual vibration for such a 'glorified' vehicle, and an automatic gearbox, which isn't the best option for a true and serious off-road car. Additionally, I have a few other important reasons not to buy this car, but let's just say that could be a subjective point of view. While I'm not a fanatic of Toyota, I do have experience with the G-Class Mercedes-Benz, which is an excellent off-road car in all aspects, but too expensive for Australia. However, regarding the Grenadier, I have no idea how a BMW engine can improve if it has always been problematic, as widely reported by BMW owners. I guess after investing over $120,000 in this vehicle, anyone would have to love it regardless of the reality. Anyway, time is the best judge. Let's talk about it in five years. And at least I'm not taking a risk, given that I don’t need five years to say that Toyota is already good. @@atavachron27

where have you been! This is the famous footrest "issue" caused by the exhaust/cat routing on RHD cars. It was likely a miss during the original design but ultimately isn't a big deal (for me at least). I guess most cars will be LHD which will not be affected. My guess is that Ineos discovered this issue for RHD, but it was too late to (econmically) rectify.

Other brands have automatic cruise control with steering assist, which means that the truck detects a danger and slams on the brakes in less time than it takes for a driver to react. Also works in reverse and it does work well. I don’t believe any of this is fitted or can be fitted to Grenadier. Certainly the 1960’s type recirculating ball power assisted steering cannot be controlled by the safety or self driving gadgets like a modern electric power steering can.

  • @atavachron27

@hedydd2 and it's all the better for it. I have driven several new rental cars with all the driver assist functions and as well as being intrusive to the point of spoiling the driving experience, I think it will (and does) result in laziness on the part of the driver. The majority may prefer this kind of semi autonomous driving experience, but I personally don't. The Grenadier intent is as clear as it can be, and if people want something more digital, they should consider something else. It's a bit like trying to make a lion a vegetarian! 😀

Think of the money you would have saved through buying a pickup with canopy, like a VW Amarok Panamericana or Ford Ranger Wiltrak. At least as much room in the cabin. Better and more active safety stuff. 10 speed automatic. Better steering on road and rough. Far better performance and fuel economy. Lower running costs and a higher payload capacity with equal tow rating. However the world would be a boring place if everyone chose the same of everything. As a station wagon, my preference for similar money as Grenadier would be a Defender 110 with the 300hp diesel motor. There’s a couple of Grenadiers here locally, within a couple of miles of one of my farms. A cream and a black one. I actually cancelled my order for a five seat ‘commercial’ version specced up, because the low payload prohibits business customers from reclaiming the VAT in the UK. By purchasing a Ranger I saved UK £35,000 after claiming VAT and will also save in income tax as well, which made the Grenadier a ridiculous proposition. Not even the pickup Quartermaster qualifies, because it can only carry 600kgs or so rather than the required 1000kgs.

I did consider a Ford Ranger wildtrack for many of the reasons you mentioned. It was very sensible and logical option. Perhaps that was the reason that as D day approached, I just couldn't do it! Every other car here in NZ is a Ranger or toyota ute. Nothing wrong with that, they are excellent vehicles, but I wanted something more than just a vehicle. I wanted something a bit different and something a bit more robust that will last 20-30 years. Nothing else on the market really offers that. Maybe a Toyota Landcruiser 300 but I can't order one in NZ currently and unlikely to even get on a waitlist until 2025! Everyone choses a vehicle for different reasons. If just a work vehicle/business vehicle then I probably agree, the Grenadier makes no sense. However, for those of us that want something a bit different and specific, the Grenadier is a fantastic machine. I don't think it was ever intended as a real rival to the mass produced utes...it's definitely a niche product. BTW I do disagree about the steering, I think the Grenadier has amazing steering, on and off road. The more I drive it the more I like it. This is another trait of the Grenadier for me (and it seems others) you like it more each day...not something that applies to many other standard vehicles.

A heavy duty all terrain vehicle is not exclusive to basic uncomfortable poorly equipped and unrefined vehicles. This one is built too heavy for its intended purpose though, in my opinion. It should have been designed to have a tare weight even in high trim variants of just less than 2.5 tons. In fact it weighs between 2.7 and 2.9 tons unladen which leaves a pitifully small payload for such a heavily built vehicle, of between 600 and 800 kgs maximum. That includes any accessories fitted such as roof racks, ladders, tools, straps, tow hitch, fuel and passengers with their luggage. Remember that a 3 ton trailer will ideally add 300kgs nose weight to it immediately, lowering the allowable cargo weight very substantially.

@@hedydd2 I think people are focusing too much on the published numbers. I think the Grenadier is overbuilt by quite a margin. I think it will carry a lot more (and do so safely) than advertised. Just look at how folks load up their 70 series and old defenders.....no way they are conforming to published payloads! I can't see any real world limitation for the Grenadier.
