It’s been years since I met some Bello expats. Some are ok but others are some tough streetwise Viet Vets and conmen and not much different than Colombian ripoff artists…you won’t find the type of people you were looking for in Bello, maybe 1 or 2…most expats there don’t have much and live bare bones and gotta be scammers…Colombians are hungry and snakes and the rich don’t need to be that way but unless you are rich and successful they don’t want anything to do with you.

I'm really torn on Bukele but I think he is almost certainly very well intentioned, I think he very likely a great guy but I do worry about what could potentially happen when power is passed from him into future presidents, does he have a contingency plan to bring back "due process"? What would really be a disaster is if we get 3 or hand overs of power and then some crazy guy gets in and still has the power to override due process, on the flip side though what he's done is magnificent!! Thank goodness these gang members mark themselves! Because of that I don't think too many people got caught up in the cross fire, the other thing about Bukele is his implementation of bitcoin as legal tender, this really points to him being fully anti corruption wherever it comes from!!! Hopefully he (and future leaders) can navigate the dangers, I think there is a chance El Salvador becomes a very powerful little country over the next 10-50 years if it plays it's cards right

I agree 100%, giving up liberty for the allusion of safety is a big mistake. I read a book called The Cocaine Prosperity, I think is the correct title which basically outlined how Cali , Miami and Medellin became economic powerhouses through the drug trade directly and indirectly. It us naive to believe the government wants to eliminate crime it is billion dollar business for both the criminals and the government.

I’ve visited Colombia more times than I can count. Heck, I’m here now as I write this. Colombia does have some bullshit going on and you have to be careful. Mainly with everybody trying to extract money from you. I was on the beach one day near Cartagena and glanced over at a vacant lot. I asked if it was for sale and everyone immediately said yes. The guy finally came over to talk about it. Nice guy but was very eager to sale it. Wanted me to put a deposit down on it that day. I later learned that a gringo living along side locals would be a disaster. I’d always be the go to guy for spare change. Every one would “lean” on me for a “gift”.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Colombian police, military, and the political class are highly corrupt. Handing all of that power to a corrupt system won't work long term. Also, Bukele basically rounded up anyone with identifying tattoos. It is not that easy to identify criminals in Colombia. How exactly do you then identify gang members? Round up everyone living in estrato 1-2 between ages 15-25?

  • @BushidoNomad

@@BushidoNomad You're right. Or worse, they would exterminate entire neighborhoods. The Colombian Truth Commission estimates that the Colombian military kidnapped and assassinated ~7k people between 2002-2008. I can't imagine what would happen if a Bukele type took over in Colombia and gave them free reign to round up anyone that they want. The people in these comments advocating for Bukele would be the first to demand changes once they're the ones being rounded up and 'disappeared'.

Brazil has been on my radar for a while. I can't get enough of the food and women. I love the vibes and the language also. I've met some really great Brazilians. The only thing that sucks is the logistics for sure. But at least it's not like trying to get to Thailand from the US. Medellin used to be good but I'm not a fan anymore. You have to be on guard everywhere you go. Forget that mess.

I agree that Bukele's approach wouldn't work in Colombia even if they tried. Colombia is way, way more complicated. Also, I'd be suspicious of any politician who sought support for something similar because it would be a pretext for even further militarisation, which has never ended well. In terms of investing and creating legitimate jobs, I would like to invest there, but the extortion problem is too bad, and policing is ineffective. No one bothers reporting crime there, so there are no genuine statistics either. Further, if Colombia ever became a Chavenist state like Venezuela, you could lose your investment anyway.

Good distinction, they should definitely put more resources/ priority/ harsher punishment towards crimes directly against civilians like armed robbery etc. Most their efforts go towards combating the drug trade not public safety (pressure from Uncle Sam)

Interesting video. I lived in Medellin for 6 months & loved it. 99% of people I encountered were lovely warm hearted folk. Problem was I got robbed twice in the 6 months I was there. I wasn't in any of the sketchy areas of MDE. Being a pale skinned Brit, I know I stick out. that wouldn't deter me though from going back there though, I still love the city. I'd love to go back there for a couple months next year. I currently live in Bangkok & haven't heard of any sketchy areas in this country(Although I'm sure there are some)

I saw a father with his kid taking a "henry the 3rd" on the footpath outside icon Siam in 2020. When he finished. He walked straight into the mall with his dad. Seen it in HK also. These ppl are from the villages. Its like medieval or the victorian era in these rural areas. As Jesus said - they know not what they do. When the same ppl visits Australia. I never see it. I think its the high end educated tourists visitng visiting. Approx 30% of Thailand is originally from China. As recently as WW2.
