Commercial Advertising Photographer for over 30 years, and a Canon Explorer of Light.
At heart, I am a portrait shooter that loves making people look larger than life.
My goal is to create images that not only fulfill my vision as an artist but also push the boundaries on what we would call traditionally acceptable.
I love the exploration process of breaking new ground. I also have a passion to encourage others to explore and fulfill their artistic vision, as well. This channel is about sharing information and educating people interested in photography!

Strobe is aperture dependant. If you have stobes that are affected by Shutter speed, you have very low end very slow flash duration. Vary background exposure by lighting background with one or more strobes set a different power ratio than your key light.
Lighting
For years, I struggled to understand the exposure triangle. It wasn’t until your approach to hold Aperture constant and vary flash power that everything finally came together. Now there’s absolutely no fear… 🙏🏾
And you cant change the shutter speed ?
Maybe he wants to shoot at 1/200
@@a1icegoddarkworld why ?
Joel is a good photographer, but he doesn't _look_ like an artist. He looks like that dad who tells you to stop being lazy and go get a "real job."

Taking the picture is easy compared to setting up everything in front of the camera. Respect.
Other times pure chance will make a beautiful shot.

I take it you’ve never invested in the M series that was canceled for the RF series. Lots of money out for nothing. Pissed me off enough to change to Sony.
For sony you can get way cheaper lenses
I bought my EF-Mount Canon 50mm f1.8 for 50€. I’m not a hater and I will switch to Sony but I just want to point out that Canon lenses aren’t expensive.

Sony's the best
In addition to using a tripod, setting the camera to Mirror Up helps to sharpen the images even more. Just turn the Vibration Reduction option OFF if on a tripod.
I think I’ll stick to my 3DS camera. Thanks
Coming from someone who has used Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji, I can definitely say canon was the worst built out of them all granted maybe it was just the specific model but it was all plastic and felt like it would break if I used it too roughly, thats why I owned canon for the least about of time, I had one for 3 months before deciding I didn’t like it, my favourite so was Nikon and Sony, I think Nikon takes the cake for the most durable, sony is very lightweight though, but in that scenario I would definitely want a Nikon, they get bad rep but are actually very well built, have nice colours and actually have great autofocus as well
Mr. Grimes, What size is that softbox?!
Hi, that is a 4x6 ft Westcott Softbox.
I am a long time Photoshop user (since 1999) but missed this method of warping. I was using Liquify Filter but this is much better when working with small parts of the image. Thank you. Also, I agree that there is no such thing as unmodified photography. Photography as a medium modifies or even distorts grotesquely and we need to fix it to make the subject look the way we saw the it with our eyes. My small tip: Instead of Cmd-C and then Cmd-D (or Cmd-V) use Cmd-J. That copies the selection into a new layer with one shortcut.
Well, this is duplicitous. Your commentary implies Canon is the only company that makes durable cameras and high quality lenses. They don’t even have a pro level body (R1)!!! I’m sure Nikon, Sony and Leica cameras have proven photojournalistic credentials equal to and possibly exceeding Canon. And both Nikon’s S line and Sony’s G Master lenses demonstrably eclipse Canon’s premium lenses.
They still have the 1Dx mk 3, I’m sure that’ll suffice till the R1 make’s itself known.
U full of shit..
cool cool photos
Looks badass Nice shots
Come do my bike

Maby it wasn't leaking oil that's why he thought it was a Honda lol
You should be teaching in business schools! Well done. Sending this to my kids...none of whom are into photography.
The brush in this tutorial is not compatible with 25.9.1 verson of PS (Windows 11). I'd hesitate to shell out big bucks when they could be unusable.
Just a minor suggestion. The two bright light sources in the back, (window and door), are, to my view, quite distracting. I find that bright areas like this distract the viewer from the subject. The door can be easily cropped out and the window shade could be closed; or, you could alter your angle of view to subject to the left, thereby eliminating both of these distractions.
Wouldn't be the best option, instead of using a lightbox, using a color corrected flash unit with a white acrylic in fornt of it, as a light souurce and just shoot it with flash instead of continuous?
Yeah Einstein 😆 Why don't you Try them Both and See for yourself. . Joel Is The King. 👊 Spent all his Life Doing what he's Doing . About you? what you do . Just pretend you Know. about Photohraphy . Can we see Ur IG ? 😆
i don't understand , how can i convert photos to 32 bit ?
In the beach motel shot you mention that you “strobe” the bike. What do you mean by that? Do you mean exposure bracket? Thanks for the info :)
Great video. One question. There are two options in 16 bit when you import the pictures in camera raw - sRGB 16bit and Adobe RGB 1998 16 bit. I have been using sRGB 16 bit. Do I lose out on these shades of grey if I don't use Adobe RGB?
Just watched tutorial. Will these work using Camera Raw within photoshop.
Good video! I’ve been scanning this way for a while, but wanted to see if you had found a good solution for newton rings. You mentioned that you would discuss it later in the video, but didn’t get back to it. Also wanted to point out, when you invert the tone curve and adjust the sliders, the Whites slider now adjusts blacks, Blacks slider adjusts whites, Highlights adjusts shadows, and Shadows adjusts highlights (and as you noted, the sliders need to move the opposite way to make the expected adjustment).
Watching in 2024 and I have in my bag the 50mm 1.2,85 1.2 and 200mm f2. Meanwhile your Westcott Beautydish, the gen I is my most love beautydiah / softbox ever, thank you.
Great video! Learned something new today.
When will we see the Joel Grimes film masterclass?
Can't wait to try this with the 400mb multi shoot 16 bit file of a GFX
I had never thought about using HDR since the range of film is well within the range of current DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. I did not know that the final DNG file was greater than 14 bit. One thing that I try to do is push the exposure fairly high ('over expose') so that the dark (silver rich) areas on negatives will have as much data (bits) as possible. Does that make sense?
Negative Supply has great products, but the cost can add up pretty quickly if you have used a variety film formats. For most of us there are perfectly fine alternatives. . . . For someone with an enlarger, the negative carriers will often work well on top of a light source for digital 'scanning'. 4x5 enlargers are particularly good because of the size of the carriers. Enlargers themselves can sometimes be converted to copy stands with a little ingenuity. The light sources can be used, as well, if they can be set to point upward from the baseboard. (Cold light and LED heads are most likely to 'stand on their heads'.) For day to day 35mm 'scanning' the Nikon ES-2 system works well with their FF macro lenses. There are numerous Chinese versions that are probably okay too, and in the height of the films days the big names often had slide/negative duplicator attachments for their macro bellows. And a number of companies that made camera accessories produced 'slide duplicators' with specialized optics. And there was the high end Bowens Illumitran that used a built in flash.
Wouldn't be the best option, instead of using a lightbox, using a color corrected flash unit with a white acrylic in fornt of it, as a light souurce and just shoot it with flash instead of continuous? also, as you mentioned the negatve carriers of all sizes from enlargers solve the problem of keepinf the film flat and adust to whatever negative size.
