Hi Shane, I watched a video you did on the construction of this Gon and asked Mr. Pictovid about it and he pointed me towards you as you were the one who built this; my question is.. what thickness styrene would you recommend for a passenger car? I would like to build a couple of LIRR commuter cars- they're 72 ft long. thanks in advance and happy 4th of july.
@CanadianrailroadsCa7 күн бұрын
Hi Robert. Happy Fourth of July. For that length, I would recommend 1/8". My rotary gons have 1/16" side walls ( 22" ) and the side walls, even with all the ribs have a lot of flex. I do my best to always handle them from the base. My SD60f's are 1/8" ( 30" ) and are a very solid model. They would be similar in length to your passenger cars. They also have two pieces of 3/4" aluminum angle running the lengths of the locomotive. The coal cars ride on top of an aluminum channel. If your cars have a really solid base, and roof, you might get away with 1/16". Bulkheads would also add strength. The majority of the manufactured models seem to use 1/8". Hope this helps.
@robertravena7 күн бұрын
@@CanadianrailroadsCa It does indeed, I saw that you used 5/8" U channel for the spine of your Gondola & figured that would be a good way to brace the floor and mount the trucks to. I have an USA trains GP-38-2 I got at a sidewalk sale at a hobby shop in Fla and will be painting it for the LIRR and want to scratch build a couple of P-72 cars to go behind it. I normally build in 2R O scale-- OW5 .. but I wanted to challenge myself plus seeing a LIRR commuter train in G would be impressive .. at least to me. p.s. the Loco is 1:29.. and from my math each car would be about 36" long.
