    This video proved nothing. A sun that rotates and changes position around the circle of the Earth can produce the same shadow results he described -which is what flat earthers believe.

    I am not a flat-earther but is there a place from where one can observe both shadows at the same time. Before planes, satellites or instant communication, how would they be able to measure the length of the shadows in two different spots at the same time?

    In order to deduce the Earth was spherical, Aristarchus first had to deduce that the Sun was very far away and its light rays were in effect parallel. That was even more amazing than concluding the Earth was curved.

    You know I've heard the name Carl Sagan a lot and I don't know if I've actually seen him in anything else and not realized it was him but I'm glad this showed up in my shorts feed so I could see him and hear what he had to say. It's baffling to me that there are so many people in the world who actually believe that the world is flat. I mean it's so obvious that it's round

    So how did the Greeks in one city know that the shadow of the obelisk in the other city was a different length?

  • @jimbobeire
    @jimbobeire5 сағат бұрын

    They wrote to each other. It happened every year on the summer solstice that there was no noon shadow in Cyene, as Cyene was on the Tropic of Cancer. Alexandria is north of the Tropic of Cancer, so the sun is _never_ directly overhead in Alexandria, but on that day it got to its highest point in the sky, about 7.1 degrees from vertical, which matches the difference in latitude between the two cities. Eratosthenes then estimated the size of Earth, and got a reasonably good estimate for that level of technology at the time.

    Maybe it's just me, but that logic seems a bit flawed. Even if the Earth were flat, there's still a chance that a shadow would/could be cast. The Earth moves around the sun. It does not remain stationary. Depending on how the Earth was laying and the direction in which it was revolving around the sun.... there should still be a shadow somewhere. The only way there shouldn't be is if the Earth's surface was directly facing the sun and the Earth remained stationary.

    How would they know what shadows were like at two different points of the earth at any given time? Did they call each other up and say, "It's noon. What does the shadow look like?"

  • @jimbobeire
    @jimbobeire5 сағат бұрын

    They could plan ahead to compare the noon shadows on the summer solstice and then compare notes later. It was already known that at Cyene on the summer solstice the sun was directly overhead at noon, so the shadow shrank until it disappeared briefly. Cyene was on the Tropic of Cancer.

    All flatearthers admit that the earth is round, they all do believe in a circular disc, not a rectangular one.

  • @Jaccayumitty
    @Jaccayumitty15 сағат бұрын

    I can't believe he got that so wrong. Yes, you can prove the Earth is round that way - but you need three sticks! With two, you can measure the diameter of the Earth, but only if you start with the assumption that it's round. Two sticks won't prove the Earth is round. A flat Earth can have no shadow at one stick and a long shadow at the other, it just means the sun is directly above the stick with no shadow. Then using the length of the shadow cast by the other stick and the distance between sticks, you could triangulate the height of the sun above the flat Earth. BUT - if you add a third stick, you find that you get three different locations for the sun, depending on whether you triangulate using the first and second, first and third, or second and third sticks. Add more sticks, and the problem just gets worse. The hypothesis that the Earth is flat is incompatible with the results. Try your experimental results with the hypothesis that the Earth has constant curvature and the sun is very distant relative to the size of the Earth, and suddenly all the results work neatly. *That's* how the ancients figured out the Earth is a sphere, and it's what enables us to navigate with sextants - one degree of change in the height of the sun, or the north star, equates to 60 nautical miles travelled north or south, regardless of where you are. Can't make that work with a flat Earth.
