UN Global Compact | Carl Sagan

In the mid-1980s, when environmental issues weren't considered as relevant as they are today and ESG had yet to exist as a concept, the visionary Carl Sagan, a Harvard professor and the author of more than 20 books, both on science and science fiction, was raising the alarm about the risks of climate change and the role humanity was playing in destroying the planet. Sagan said back then that even a one-degree change to the planet's temperature would be enough to provoke terrible suffering worldwide. And he was right.
Forty years on, Sagan's speeches are at the heart of a new film from the UN Global Compact, with creative by AlmapBBDO and Boiler Filmes. Using Sagan's original recordings, the film shows an installation featuring automatons of wild animals, hand-crafted by Argentine artist Pablo Lavezzari and driven by the tape spooling out of an old tape player.
The soundtrack to Sagan's words is “When The Land Meets The Sea," a song made out of a single tape loop by Amulets, an artist known as “The Tape Wizard”.
The installation was set up at Bolsa de Arte in São Paulo, a gallery which put on an exhibit for guests. The idea is for the piece to be exhibited at galleries abroad in the second half of 2023.
The campaign is designed to make people reflect about an issue that was urgent then and is a full-blown emergency today. The idea is to invite companies to commit to the aims and goals of the UN Global Compact, a 2000 initiative that seeks to lead the corporate world in adopting humanitarian action.

I feel like Carl Sagan would be incredibly disappointed in the direction humanity has gone.

He would be astounded by the prigress made in computers, the presence of the Internet itself, and the advent of neural-network AIs...And then immediately disappointed, when he realised that computers are being used as server farms for crypto, 80+percent of internet traffic is spam, and AI is being used to put people out of work by psychotic startups, who barely understand how AIs work, oh and that there wildfires *in the fucking arctic circle*!

Carl Sagan was not only the greatest storyteller of science to ever walk the face of the planet but also the gatekeeper of scientific credibility, he's gone for almost 2 decades now but his writings, speeches and his magic shall live for evermore ❤

Love the video. Thanks for posting. I think Carl Sagan is more closely associated with Cornell (who gave him tenure) than Harvard (who turned him down when he applied for tenure), though.

who is "we"? As a broke person that struggle to keep food on the table, i COULD NOT CARE LESS ABOUT THAT. I used to think like him when i was young and quite dumb (might still be dumb, cause i am old and broke) and did not see how capitalism works. I worked for a lot of folks that exploits the earth and cause damage, without any regard for the people or animals that live near, watched them get very rich and never heard from them losing the sleep at night. Those people now got children and grand children and the "empire" keeps going, family business. Besides, money brings long term happiness

If oil, gas, and livestock companies didn't care about about others, and the planet, and only worried about their capitalist goals, I'm sure you'd agree that you wish they had. Start with you. Start caring about this, start caring about others. Read one of Sagan's books. The idea that these concepts aren't important because you are struggling ends up being a race to the bottom. It can't be sustained.

you think money brings happiness because you are being believed to do so. You are so used to think a large amount of money brings happiness that you can't think otherwise. For me I could care less of earning a huge amount of money. I want to be a monk later on my life to live a simplistic life away from all these money centric minds. And you might think it's easy to tell and hard to do. Yes that's true. I live in a money centric world too, but I believe I can do it after some hardships.
