Liberty Rifles

Liberty Rifles

The Liberty Rifles (LR) is a group of living historians who strive to accurately portray the common fighting men and home front civilians of the American Civil War, while excelling in terms of authenticity and organization. We constantly seek opportunities to educate ourselves and others about the sacrifices and experiences of our ancestors. The LR was founded to represent soldiers and civilians on both sides of the war with equal accuracy and honor.

Imagine cooking breakfast in the morning, then hearing 20,000 experienced soliders yelling like that within mere feet of your trench. no wonder those Union soldiers at Chancellorsville didn't stop running until they hit Mexico

Impressive, always love seeing true company+ sized formations. But I must say that the classic, stoic, three Huzzahs always just hit a bit harder for me for some reason😌 (I acknowledge my bias)

Hancock asked for 5 min they bought him 15 pushing 1,400 under Wilcox 75 yards. Those 47 were richly rewarded with the opportunity to help defend against Pickett's charge the very next day. The were joined by I believe it was about 100 of their comrades who had been detached on the second day.

"Colonel, do you see those colors? Well, take them!" Of all the many, many heroic vignettes to come from those three days, the story of the 1st Minnesota has always been way up there with The 6th Wisconsin and the 20th Maine.

Slaughtered. 262 men that went in to battle, 47 walked away unharmed. 215 men were either killed or wounded and the regiment suffered a casualty rate of 82% by some accounts.

My ancestors fought on both sides of the Civil War and from what I've learned they took that from the Native Americans and then adopted it within their ranks because they fought side by side. The unions response was to use grapeshot.
