Honestly city levels are.... Fine.. the problem is is that the buildings dont really look like real life. They just dont have great textures and since dooms 3d is so limited the buildings just look... Meh to me. I like the city levels gameplay but as a guy who loves graphics they just dont look detailed enough. Also since dooms color pallete and shading is really REALLY bland it doesnt look that good. I have to say though. The gameplay is fun at that so who gives a crap.
I feel like Nerf Arena Blast could fall under the “kids premise with a mature game engine.” An Unreal Tournament shooter based in a Nerf world.

The game focuses a lot more on exploring, building, mining, and crafting with a bit of survival, even though survival is meant to be the main focus of the game it isn't really important. I agree that it would be good if the game included a lot more having to do with survival though and the ideas for how to do that that you came up with are great, though the idea for mobs being able to destroy blocks would cause a lot of issues especially with your idea for creepers exploding without needing to see you, that would be good for an optional setting to make the game harder but if it wasn't optional than it would cause a lot of issues for players who aren't focused on survival and players who want to make buildings without the risk of it being destroyed. I understand that you already brought that issue up, but I wanted to talk about it further in this comment.
Well, I'd rename current Survival to something like "Casual", and then add an ACTUAL survival mode with these features.

Another cute censorship was rainbow six sieges April fools event called rainbow is magic. All the players are either toy soldiers or the furry skins that came with the event, the hostage is a teddy bear, the whole map is a toy plane in a child’s bedroom, heck even the bullet holes are cutesy, and that’s not even scratching the surface of what the changed. I find it wild they did all of that just for a limited time event
I view them as related purely because the little faces on the HUDs of the classic games look like they could totally be family. That's all the justification I need, even if it ultimately doesn't matter. Alternatively they could be reincarnations of the same heroic spirit defending the ID software multiverse.

I know it probably doesn't count, but the in-lore cognition filter from Lobotomy Corporation is an interesting example of this, even if it's only there because of time constraints.
I played Doom 2's city levels for hours on end. In retrospect they've not aged well, but in 1994 they were mindblowing. I still appreciate their abstract design as Sandy Peterson, John Romero, and others decided that making levels based on how places looked in real life didn't make them fun to play.

I actually do like modes that replace the blood/gore with other things. You are right that it doesn't really remove violence though, but I think of it more as just a funny option. Even Chex Quest SAYS it's non-violent, and technically it is I guess, but if that non-violence is functionally identical to the violent violence in Doom, does it actually make a difference? No disrespect to Chex Quest btw, I adore that game and have since I got the CD in my cereal.
It’s not technically a censorship thing but I remember Rambo 6 siege did an event once that basically made counter strike for kids real. All the maps were made into toy versions. There were custome character skins n what not. Blood replaced n the objectives given new wording but remaining the same. I think that’s the only other way you can really get a sorta censorship mode that’s actually well developed without it being the whole game, because events need to be as good as the game itself
