There exists a difference between edgy humor and just straight up being an offensive prick and an unfortunately large portion of people who consider themselves conservatives fall into the blender of laughing at their own poorly reviewed view points. Just having a lesbian character that you call gross at every opportunity is not a joke, it's an insult. Laughing at an insult means that you're a douchebag. You can make humor that toes the line and says things that "you can't say anymore." Louis C.K. is an amazing comedian. Yes, I know the story, there's a reason I specify comedian. But he has an entire bit where he gets away with saying the n word. He literally stands on stage and repeatedly says what many would consider THE offensive word. Because he set up the joke rather than putting down and shitting on a group of people via characature.

When this show first came out me and my roommates loved it. But I remember going back to it a year or two later and barley cracking a smile. I started wondering about what changed about me and my perspective on comedy. Then I realized we mostly put this show on when we were near blackout drunk as background noise and occasionally going "haha sex and violence funny"

Pathological liar's that i knew were like this. My father was like that, and now hes old and he cant keep up with all his lies. I had my suspicions for some of my friends, so i would test them with various conversational traps as well. What i noticed is that - they will never admit it. They will go as far as to lie about doing something much, much worse than the lie they are trying to cover up - if that is the only way to not admit it. I read somewhere, if u doubt someone is lying by telling a fake story, you can ask them, or somehow act and make them repeat that same story in the reverse order - because they already had to expend a lot of brain processing power to construct a lie, and to now repeat it ad verbatim but reversed will be 10 times more difficult. A friend of ours, i suspected he was a narcissist, so i told to my other friend - hey lets talk about a movie that does not exist, just make stuff up and feel free to throw in as much random shit as you can. So we just went to town, and at one point i turned around and i asked the sus friend : So. You probably watched this right ? What was your favorite scene ? You can guess what happened. We were shocked, yes, but at the same time it was so cringe that it was also kinda funny - that he was now trying to piece together all the random shit we said, so that he could construct a lie about a non-existing scene for a movie that does not exist. I asked him afterwards - do you know who Baron Münchhausen is ? - and he also played dumb. They use this often. I know for a fact he knows who the Baron was and what he represents. We even say - nemoj da baronishes. In serbian its a street slang kind of, you say that when someone is lying - and its a popular slang everyone knows and uses - Don't be baron-ing around - would be a translation. And this is something everyone knows in my country its a popular slang term.

Smiling friends is just absurd humor in an absurd environment. It aligns well with current overall humor within internet culture. Most jokes online are just laughing at weird or dumb things people do or just stuff that doesn't make sense at all. I think its success is thanks to the ideal timing of release, and how well it aligns with what people currently think is funny.
