Netflix's Paradise PD is Painfully Unfunny

Фильм және анимация

In our current state of social distancing I thought I'd check out a new show on Netflix to pass the time. What I found, Paradise PD, is one of the least funny comedies of all time. On top of not being funny, it loves to toot its own horn and is one of the most obnoxious shows on the platform.

Kevin trying to close the zoo by calling in a bomb threat, only to be sent to the zoo because they received a bomb threat, really was a surprisingly good joke. I actually laughed for that one.

One thing that makes that joke work really well is the chief's serious order to Kevin. One reason most "say one thing then the opposite happens" jokes fall flat is that the characters involved talk or act like they know they're creating an ironic situation. For an example from this video: "Don't worry, Dusty will be fine in prison." "Dusty will NOT be fine in prison!", a statement given by a newscaster like he knows that one of his viewers was just talking about how Dusty will probably be fine. The characters knowing about it makes it unnatural and detracts from the humor of the situation. But this isn't the case with the chief sending Kevin to deal with the bomb threat. The chief acted like he got a call about a bomb threat and was sending his only available officer. He's treating the situation very seriously, even though Kevin and the audience know there's nothing to worry about, thus the irony shows more naturally. This is a long comment for one element of a quick joke, but the devil's in the details.

The funniest part about the joke itself is that The Amazing World of Gumball already did that kind of thing first. The difference is that the latter has genuinely clever writing and some level of self-awareness, which is something that none of the writers for Paradise PD even have to begin with.

Not to mention the ending about HOW they got the news media to back off by LITERALLY giving both sides what they wanted whilst simultaneously giving them the opposite of what they wanted was brilliant! And it almost makes me wish someone DID do what they did so that I can see what both sides of the media would do in a scenario like that as newscasters are morons when it comes to being put on the spot XD

Comedy is, at its core, _getting away with it._ When a comedian makes a joke that’s actually edgy, like a joke about abortion or something very serious, they are _making the audience laugh at that terrible edgy thing, and GETTING AWAY WITH IT._ When a comedian makes a stupid joke, like “I used to smoke; I still do, but I used to, too!”, and makes the audience laugh, they are GETTING AWAY WITH their stupid joke thought. When a dad joke makes you go “ugghhhhhhh!!!!!” the comedian is GETTING AWAY WITH IT. This show? This show… _doesn’t_ get away with it.

Although if I recall the people behind this also did Brickleberry (spelled something like that) an equally unfunny Park Ranger and Yogi bear rip off/parody sit com cartoon where they initially pitched and made the first episode/s using GoAnimate which was a software that could only create really poorly done knockoff family guy characters and art and they haven’t changed their “style” since. The original Conan movies with Arnold really nailed this on the head. Yes there was sex, when it made sense. Yes there was gore, it wasn't super over the top with the most gross thing being the stew of human parts that doesn't go super over the top gore for one and for two is to cement that the cult they are infiltrating isn't as peaceful as they claimed up front. I mean seriously what happened to western media? A movie about a mighty barbarian had more thought provoking writing. Some shows can use a limited budget and therefore somewhat ugly animation to their comedic advantage, like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Beavis and Buthead, and Space Ghost. I laughed exactly twice in this whole video. The bomb threat joke got a chuckle. It was an actual good subversion of expectations because the zoo guy clearly didn't believe him but they go ahead with it anyway. Then I laughed when they took the shot at B99 with the tarantula because I remembered that scene in B99, which is actually funny. So really they didn't earn that joke because I was just remembering a good show.

Even if you don't find Bojack funny or profound (I find it both, personally), watching an episode of that show, you're like, "Oh, the characters actually sound and act normal, and they're not projecting bodily fluids all over the screen, how refreshing!" The bar is so low that I'm just happy to see writers making a full set-up and punchline without anything obnoxious, and people say you can't criticise writing aimed at children because it's just meaningless and doesn't matter.

They had to do the counting just in case anybody watching the show didn't get it. That honestly is something that kills a lot of comedy nowadays; explaining WHY a joke is funny so that EVERYONE can understand it. If someone didn't get the joke before, it's not gonna be funnier when you explain it. It just ruins the joke for anyone that did get it in the first place.

I would like to point out that, while that is obviously true, it also is not as meaningfull as it sounds. It's just obvious that if percentage wise less of you body consists of vital organs, there is a larger percentage of your body that you can get shot in, without you suffering dangerous or fatal wounds. That's it. In order to have a layer of fat stop a bullet before it reaches an organ, the layer of fat would need to be 60cm (or even 72cm, depending on the source) thick, which might occur at the exact right angle with a morbidly obese person, but can in no way account for that statistic.

This reminds me of when the Ed Edd n Eddy creator was asked why he made such a show. The man loved inappropriate humor and his friends dared him to make a show for kids. The guy said that it really helped him to make good comedy because he had to edit himself a lot.

Ed, edd, n Eddy had creativity and good characters tho. There was a style and vision and it evolved over time. This is just lazy.

god that show is so overrated. It was good for early Cartoon Network but Jesus it’s not the holy grail of cartoons.

@@sub-zero5433 I’m not saying it’s the pinnacle of cartoon comedy, but I wanted to acknowledge the effectiveness of editing yourself down. In adult cartoons you’re essentially allowed to make any joke you want, but some writers seem to interpret that as “I don’t need to edit myself anymore”.

It's from the same people who made Brickleberry. Its fate was sealed from the beginning.
