Ryukyu Kenpo Kobujutsu at Kfar Adumim

Ryukyu Kenpo Kobujutsu at Kfar Adumim

"REAL" KARATE - IS WHAT WE TEACH!
For close to five decades, the Academy has taught Ryukyu Kenpo Kobujutsu (琉球 拳法 古武術). Traditional Oriental teachings with modern Western training methods. Its original purpose was to train elite military forces operating on the 'Bleeding' edge of contact with the enemy. Full contact Bogu sparring for distancing, timing, power development, angles of attack, and desensitization training is utilized. Proper focus on targets, striking, and body weapons, done slowly for memory retention, is emphasized. Modern and improvised weapons are taught. It is REAL Karate the kind that was taught before "modern" systems, when advanced students and Masters were FEARED, and it was only taught to professionals whose careers dealt with life and death situations in Okinawa. Our system utilizes the original teachings of Shigeru Nakamura and Seiyu Oyata. In 2023 the secrecy was lifted to allow the benefits of its methods to become known to the public. Kinda confused here. What are you trying to say? Naihanchi stance is one and a half shoulders wide - max, feet are parallel on the outer sides, knees pointing to the sides, hips are tilted forward. This according to Oyata and me.

    @@mrantek7373 I had a reply almost completed when by the magic of my phone it disappeared! Our systems are different and I'm teaching and doing as Choki Motobu, Shigeru Nakamura, and Seiyu Oyata's ways were taught to me originally. They are my lineage for this kata and I cannot disavow what has been handed down to me. I am happy that you took the time and effort to post your thoughts on this kata. Your way is valid as much as is ours. You have your reasons, we have ours. Keep up your learning and questioning. It's good for you and the people you interact with. Under or around the foot? For us around means a sweep of the foot. We step with the foot fully on the ground, just like our cat stance where the front foot is flat on the ground.

    My student Boaz Steigman is a Chinese Medical practitioner and supplies me with Dit da jow. The politics sucked but I'm senior to everyone except Greg Lindquist. Unlike him, I'm still in excellent shape and thanks to Oyata have developed the self-defense tactics in line with his original teachings. At this point they bear no relationship with what is being taught by those I left behind in the states. The weapon work he drilled into me looks nothing like what they claim he taught them later. I haven't filmed any of it yet. I hope to get around to it sometime in the future. There's too much I need to do before that. Hope you enjoyed the video. I don't script anything. It just comes out like it does and I have to edit some of it out! Shabbat Shalom!

    Why does George Dillman still call it Kempo.

  • @ryukyu-kenpo
    @ryukyu-kenpo3 ай бұрын

    He's invested in the term. Oyata and his crowd crapped on George for no good reason after George brought Oyata into public awareness and ushered in Oyata's ability to make beaucoup bucks. Before George, Oyata was an unknown nobody. Until George talked to Black Belt magazine, they had never heard of him and it took someone of George's notoriety to get their interest in finding out about him. The rest is history.

    @ryukyu-kenpo I wouldn't go THAT far. If Taika used George to get his name out there, George was just as guilty of using photo ops with various masters to build HIS fame. I know you are just demonstrating the movement of the Kata but that should never prevent you from putting maximum effort in to the Kata movements How we train is how we fight Putting NO effort in to Kata is putting no effort in to fighting and we will get destroyed ..

  • @ryukyu-kenpo
    @ryukyu-kenpo3 ай бұрын

    Kata and fighting are two different aspects of the system. Fighting is NOT the purpose of Kata training. Thinking that Kata is the same as fighting is a very modern concept not supported by history. As Oyata put it to me, Kata is meant to be misunderstood. Your Master teaches you the truth of Kata and what you are doing. That is his job. What looks like a punch is not a punch, any more than a block is a block. Appearances are meant to be deceiving to the unwelcome outside observer. It is desirable for others to "monkey see, monkey do" and know no better. Let them wear themselves out physically and not be able to absorb the mental aspects of combat training. We are training for life and death combat, not 'fighting'!

  • @ryukyu-kenpo

    In addition to my previous response, this is a training video. As such, doing it with full power and speed would destroy any value it might have. The movements would not be observable in the video. All you would see is a blur. I know. I have made that mistake. We had to redo the entire video. What a waste of time.

I come to the United States every once in a while. They're talking about having a seminar in the Kansas City area this year. David Altman wants Billy Wilcox and Gerald Wicklund to organize it. I'd like it to be a couple of days long.

    Greetings, I was curious how he explained the “vital point” aspect to you in the early days. I started with Shiro Shintaku back in the mid 80s, just when Shiro was switching over to Oyata’s style, so he’d come do a seminar and Ko some people and that was amazing to see (I was about 14 years old). Given my youth, Oyata himself would never do anything to me, even when I requested it many times. The knowledge was so hush hush at the time, but there were those trying to explain it via Chinese medicine, or even Western medicine, etc… just curious how Master Oyata explained it himself in the days prior to the mainstream exposure. Even when I questioned Steven Stark, Greg, Jim Logue, Gary Shull, and students of Albert Geraldi, it seemed they either didn’t know how he was doing it or he simply didn’t share with them the ‘key’ to it. One of my good friends who sponsored me for the shodan test (which was just performing Naihanchi Shodan in front of Master Oyata) was Darrin Renee (RIP), one of Geraldi’s students, and he honestly said he had 0 clue about kyusho, as Geraldi never taught him. Darrin was 2nd degree at the time I met him. I was admonished more than once for even asking! And heaven forbid they see me practicing my Philippine Kali…. Even though now so many of them do it alongside their Kobudo. I was just supposed to practice the drills and not question it. So, I moved on, but never lost my respect for Oyata’s skill. As for many of his “top” students, that’s another issue. I was happy to find your posts, to hear some honest straightforward talk without the mumbo jumbo. I’d love to hear your take on it in a video, 40 mins 50 mins, this is history, it’s important. @@ryukyu-kenpo

Almost (though not all) of the reactions you saw were faked for the audience. what he did to George Dillman the first time they met was real. Later that night I ko'd one of George's students with a forearm strike. And ended up in a book, Founders, Masters, and Leaders of American Martial Arts" published in 1985. Some are for training and others DO work. The Naihanchi kick to the knee is one. We didn't have a bat to demonstrate with, but what I did to Yoshi does work. I just don't show my follow-ups, normally. If I'd had the bat, I'd have shown the easy-to-do takeaway and use on the attacker. Facebook has warned me that showing some of my stuff will get me banned. Most of Oyata's kata moves (originally) were entry movements leading to the solution. His later stuff was basically crap for public consumption. Geraldi agreed with me that it was for the sake of making money. Had to add two commas!

    I hate computers. This is the third time attempting to complete this reply. The others were wiped out, the first when, basically, completed. You are an idiot. THAT'S what you got from my reply? That YOU are an idiot? I don't recall or see where I called you an idiot. I used hyperbole to get my point across regarding the speed and power that I was going to use, which was explained at the beginning of the training video. It was general not specific in nature. Yeah! A 747 at 3000 feet overhead can be a bit of a distraction. I don't eat an American diet and mine is essentially natural; so, supplements are unnecessary. "your fist connecting a half second to your opponent before your foot comes down" is covered in other videos of ours. Essential in technique execution but impossible in proper kata execution. You can't maintain your balance. "Maps"? Never heard of them. In 1976, Oyata, Sensei came to the United States. I was waiting for him when he arrived. Master Oyata gave my Dojo the name, Ryukenkan, or Academy of Ryukyu Kempo*. I was Master Oyata's first 'transfer' student. For ten years, I, daily, learned and practiced Master Oyata's Ryukyu Kempo. From three times a week to almost daily, I was in contact with him. Not a week passed that I didn't learn, personally, from Oyata, in private lessons, small group classes, or personal conversations. In 1977, Master Oyata conferred upon me a Shihan Menjo (師範 免状). Oyata promoted me to Renshi and 6th Dan Black Belt in 1984 before we traveled to a photo shoot with Black Belt Magazine. At this time, I started traveling with Master Oyata across the United States, giving seminars and interviews with him. I represented Master Oyata in Europe and the Middle East. As a result of a chance meeting during a seminar given by Master Oyata where I was assisting in the demonstrations and teaching, I was surprised a year later to find that I had been included in the book, Masters, Founders, and Leaders of American Martial Arts published in 1985. Oyata didn't call anyone an idiot. He called them "Stuping" (translation: Stupid). As far as Naihanchi Shodan, I sent you the link to Chosei Motobu (Choki Motobu's son) so you can see the differences and similarities between the way Oyata taught me and Choki Motobu's way that Master Nakamura taught it. PS. I don't know it all. I just know the way we do it. Check out Motobu's video.

    Good stuff. Long term Isshinryu Karate student here, so I'm very familiar with Naihanchi kata. I especially liked you correcting the pointless "wailing" fake kia some people do. Also liked the point about the knee kick at the end.

    Another excellent video Sensei Natan. Your comment about doing the terrorist squish had me on the floor laughing. 😅😅. It's disappointing to me that there aren't tons of views snd comments on your videos. You put so much into them. Please don't get discouraged about it and please certainly don't stop making videos. Very few people have your knowledge and or the willingness to share it with others. Be well and I'm looking forward to more of your excellent teachings and some good chuckels from your funny eay of getting some of your points across.

    I always learn something useful when I watch your videos and your sense of humor slways gives me s good belly 😂. Do you have the tanbos made here in Israel? Also kama say oli?

    One: Your uniform is ready for you to pick up. Two: We make all of our Tanbo here in Kfar Adumim. Three: Kama have been declared "weapons of war" in Israel evidently because the common agricultural tool sold in all Oriental countries to harvest rice is an existential threat to the Israeli military, as is the civilian AR-15 sporting rifle. But we sell the Communist sickle the kibbutzim use, to replace the Oriental version!

    Thank you ... I am in Nashville Tennessee at 11 years old I was introduced to kenpo it was the Ed Parker system.. a couple of his bodyguards finally left Memphis and came to Nashville and open up a school so the difference between Kempo...and kenpo.. seriously confused me I was told as a very young kid that if it was Chinese Origins it was Kempo if it was Japanese origin it was Kenpo... I wish that I could have had the opportunity to learn Okinawan... my background for Okinawan is Shorin.ryu..isshin ryu... thank you so much I am constantly striving for information on this art that I love

    Great stuff! A couple things you said took me back to my childhood. Like the knife edge kick, I still use that analogy sometimes lol. It’s truly amazing that a master instructor of your caliber would take the time and energy to shoot a video like this, because one person asked! I hope your students over there appreciate you and the value of the service they are getting! Thank you sir!

    Thank you for your comment! Too many watch and don't. The like button also really helps in getting our industry (yes! it IS an industry) more exposure to the general population. Without their participation martial arts would fade away.

    In the grand scheme of things, it is only a matter of pronunciation and spelling is unimportant. We should not make a big deal out of this unimportant subject.
