Tims Trike Trips is all about cycle touring but... doing it in a comfy chair.
Join me on my recumbent Trike affectionately known as 'Trinny', while I pedal to places all over the UK and beyond.
In 2024 I'm off to cycle in Europe. With no plan and hardly any training, it should be quite an adventure.
I also like wildcamping and outdoor cooking. If that's your thing then you might like what I have to offer.

for me hard to imagine to be away from home this long, alone, and riding the trike. So nice that you are taking us with your on your adventure, same as Matthew says, never met you but feels like know you for a long time ☺ keep on riding Trinny Tim and keep taking us with you, inspire us to go out on the trike, and enjoy your Cappuccino, maybe an idea to film this moment to, didn't see you drinking that coffee🤭. 👋👋 ☕
Ha! You have no idea the flak I get when I record me eating and drinking... but as you asked so nicely... keep an eye out 😉👍 I'll keep going for as long as it's still fun. So we've a way to go just yet I reckon. Thanks for all your encouragement too. It is lonely out on the trails some days and, believe it or not, I also think of many of you who comment on my videos as friends of mine too.
@@TimsTrikeTrips i will keep an eye out☕️☕️.Tim , greetings from a Cappuccino lover 👋🏻
I prefer mine strong and black!
Well done Tim, another great video! I suspect that you will have already moved on by the time you read this, but Mulhouse is home to the Schlumpf museum, which I am told is a must-see for trikers like me who also happen to be car enthusiasts 😃 No relation to my Schlumpf Mountain Drive though. I hope that your revised itinerary turns out to be just as enjoyable as your original plan. You are living the dream for us (static) armchair trikers! Looking forward to the next episode!
The new route is fantastic (so far) 👍 It's quite exciting not knowing where I'll end up next, ha ha.
Hello, Tim. I'm glad that Trinny is running good again. I really enjoy the drone footage and seeing the countryside from above.
Well there's plenty more of that to come 👍😁
Tim, it was a lovely detour. Did you find some nice pastries at the French supermarket? Very nice scenery and the bird sounds seem to follow you. Onward and upward, Tim.
Nah, supermarket pastries aren't as good as the artisan ones. But sometimes there just isn't any choice 🤷🏻♂️
Cheers, Tim. I really like when you set the camera and we see you riding by. It's been hot today so I was ready to take a dip with you. LOL. Onward and upward, Tim. Keep triking.
Seems like we're all getting some sun at last. Thanks Lucy 😉👍
Beautiful ride Tim! Your a lucky individual that gets to live your dream! The ups and downs of your tour have taught me to stay positive. So keep on going and thank you for showing us a little bit of the world!😂
The ups and downs of the tour have made it very difficult to stay positive (at times). I try to ensure that the videos give off a positive vibe, but there's plenty of hard work and grind to endure going on in the background. That's why I'm always so grateful to all you folks in the comments offering me so much positivity and encouragement to keep going. 😉👍
Tim, the church bell reminded me of the night that the church bell rang every 15 minutes. 🙂 Glad that the shifter is working once again for you.... Sounds like the hostel was quite the experience. Keep on Triking!
Thanks Tom. I'm trying to forget the church AND the hostel 😉 The gearbox has been good ever since (touch wood) 🤞
Haha when you said go back to the UK I was like "c'mon Tim, you just got started!" haha, but hope you'll be able to sketch out a nice tour.. regardless of the circumstances..
😉 The tour goes on... I don't know where... but that doesn't really matter very much does it 🤷♂️
Gosh Tim so glad Trinnie (sp) is working. Rain is one thing but mechanical problems are a whole different story, so glad she’s running well again. When you said the hostel was “cheap” I thought oh boy, you get what you pay for. Stay strong and LOVE your videos!
I thought I said the hostel was inexpensive, 😉😉 Anyway turns out inexpensive means the same as cheap in any case. Wow, was that an experience.! Thanks for the encouragement 👍
If the hotel you stay at was the hotel F1 Mulhouse Centre Ouest, your thought of the place matches the one star rating they have received. The countryside and villages you're riding through look wonderful, so hopefully it makes up for this stay. I enjoy the videos, so thanks for the time and effort to put them out.
Indeed. It was a drug dealing, sex workers paradise. No security. Fire doors all wide open to the street all night long. I would have slept much better in the tent. Thanks for your kind comments 😉👍
Tim thank you for the videos I've been enjoying them keep up the good work
Thanks Jason. Much appreciated 👍
Hi Tim, I have always loved your willingness to share your trips with us (2018 Olympic Park seems like yesterday). Your sense of adventure, along with your level head, flexibility and sense of humor in spite of the inevitable curveballs life offers has always been inspirational. At first blush it seems a bit strange to be vested in the well being of someone when we've never met in person, but you've been so earnest and forthright over the course of 6 years and so many videos, of course it makes sense. You've always got an ally in me, and please know that what you do impacts people around the world. Not bad for having some fun riding a trike, huh? Take care, Matt
Wow Matt! That's quite humbling for me to read. Thank you for taking the time to write it. I hope I can keep producing the same or better in the future too.
It’s great following this series, so when you mentioned the airport did cause a mild panic 😂. Thankful you are continuing and I hope you have no more mechanical hiccups along the way
You'd have to be very lucky indeed to do these sort of distances and not have some issues along the way. But Trinny and I will keep trundling along as long as we can... and as long as we're still enjoying it of course 😉
Another great watch. Particularly liked the villiage, church bell playing and your drone work. Glad you got Trinny working again.Well done. Thanks Tim.
The villages are pretty aren't they? A shame the eurovelo routes seem to bypass so many of them.
(Referring to the email I sent you today.) Well as far as your opinion of Mulhouse, I guess there's strong evidence that battles are indeed fought over some undesirable places... I'm curious as to what brand cycling shoes you're using. I could use a new pair. I wear hard-to-find US size 12 or 13. Appreciate it if you could send your reply about this to the email I sent today... 😁
I will copy this to the email... these shoes are shimano. I have a lovely pair of shimano MTB boots at home that protect my ankles more but I thought they were too heavy for this summer tour.
You seem to have had some decent quality cyclepaths in this episode. Also the village you passed through was very nice and tranquil. And a nice sunshine, retirement can be blissful. Or at least that's what you want us to believe with your videos. 😊 Have a nice weekend and see you in the next one.
Blissful!? Ha! 😃 I've always tried to keep my videos upbeat. Who wants to watch the trials of everyday ordinary life...? There are some things that you can't hide from the viewers but I see no need to tell you every time I have a headache. Yes, seems we all enjoy the villages. The routes planners didn't share our love for them, sadly. Perhaps I'll try to make some of my own detours.
I love the use of the drone. Always adds to any video but i get it that you can only use it in certain places. And glad that the efneo is working. Would you have to change your boom if you were to add a chainring since there is nothing to fix a derailleur to? Or would it just be a single chainring? Are there many trike shops in europe.
I haven't seen any trike shops at all. They seem to specialise in cargo bikes and electrics though. I'd love to fly the drone more but I'm always very aware of the horrendous noise it makes and how it might annoy others. You'll seldom see other people on my drone shots for that reason. Yes, there's no post for a derailleur on Trinny. I have fitted single rings to her before. The trick is finding the right size ring for the prevailing conditions. Or fit a multi-ring and stop to change it by hand I suppose 🤔
Hey Tim. I just watched this from both of my KZread accounts and gave it a like from both because you deserve it😊. Just one observation. Could it be that your boom is a bit too short? It looked like it when you showed the efneo drive. Is this due to your knee problems? It looks like you need to extend the boom a bit to get proper leg extension but perhaps that is a choice you made to spare your knees.
Hi Alex, I haven't dared to move the boom in or out just yet. Though I am tempted to move it out a touch. I've watched my left leg and at times the knee tends to move in toward the boom through a full revolution. Anyway I have to do some trials and see. Thanks for the additional views 😃👍
Glad to hear the shifter is back to being shifty. Let’s hope it does not get any more ideas. Id say we are about due for a “Tent Tabernacle “, What say You ?😊
Well I don't remember when the next tabernacle is but I'll try to make sure I'll do a few just for you Chis 😃👍 No more problems with the gearbox since so all is well there.
LOL … THanks 😂
As to the Efnio drive? 1st Law of Maintenance: Never force anything. Use a larger hammer 🔨 . Couple of taps in the correct spot might resolve the problem. 😊 I'm thinking that something shifted out of alignment and by opening it up, it decided to work properly, at least for a while. 😮 It might be a quality issue, so put it on your to do list. In the meantime, keep on pedaling and looking for dry land. As I quoted before, "The dogs bark and the caravan moves on."
Well whatever it was it hasn't returned (yet) and I'm a good few days past this episode now so 🤞 I knew there was something I forgot to put in my toolkit... must get a big hammer 😉
@@TimsTrikeTrips Plastic hammer would work and it's lighter (Trinny carrying enough as it is) Remember your physics, force equals mass times acceleration but you knew that. 😁
Maybe I can get one that squeaks every time I hit something with it 😉
It's a shame you're having to change the route, the alternative is fitting a snorkel to trinny.
😊😊
Do you think she might float if I put more air in her tyres? 😉👍
Always interesting and quite the ride - wishing you better digs next time.
Better digs? I think it highly unlikely I'll ever stay somewhere quite as nasty, dirty and scary as that again. I honestly wonder at some of the 5 star reviews the place gets... must be the staff I guess. Cheers Mark 👍
Hey Tim, Great vidios. Keep them coming. I have been watching you for years. ✌
Hiya Hobie... good to see you again 😃👍
From a “Close Encounter” to being “Smack in the Middle” of a dirty mess …. With pleasant views of the canal placed nicely in between. You sure know how to have a good time 😅
Aye, it's all good fun... when you look back on it.
How long is that canal 🤯 great ride Tim! Hope the drive is doing good now.. do you think you could take it to a bike shop to fix? I've never seen that kind of drive before..
Oh, I only rode a small part of it ... its over 350km long 😁 No. I'm serious. The gearbox is specialist. I think only the manufacturer would want to open it up. I certainly wouldn't.
nice video Tim, hope trike is fine by now, enjoy the ride some more!!
Cheers Ed No more problems with the drive to date 👍
I hope your Efneo issue has been resolved.
Seems that way. It's behaved ever since 👍
😂🤣👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️
😜🤣🤪👍 cheers Aus.
if it has a clutch with plates they should not be greasy right ? but that's as far my knowledge goes
No clutch. Its very much like a mini Rohloff in that regard.
I guess coffee and/or energy drinks are keepng you going after a night of little sleep. Nice to know, the chain of supermarket that sponsored a pro cycling team in the late eighties is still in operation. Pleasant scenery, it a shame about the mosquito. I am guessing there not mosquitoes, but non-biting midges. Good luck with future mechanical issue(s).
Coffee where I can find it in the mornings otherwise its the dreaded red bull 🤢 I'm quite sure these are mosquitoes. I've been bitten by enough in my time 🤪👍
@@TimsTrikeTrips okay. There are other flavors of Red Bull, so maybe you would one like one of those. Mosquitos are not usually flying around in a cloud , so your description reminded me of chironomids, but maybe you just attract enough of them to form a cloud. Good luck with the mosquitos and with finding those other flavors of Red Bull.
Ah I see what you're saying about the mozzies now! Yes you may well be right. Perhaps they were the dreaded midges (like Scotland are plagued with). With the red bull, it's not so much the flavours. It's just the "drinking soda for breakfast" thing... but it's an easy way of getting that caffeine boost in the morning 😵💫
@@TimsTrikeTrips There caffeine pills, over here there called No Doz. Truck (lorry) drivers use them. Yes, they could be biting midges (ceratopognids). If they are you have to worry about them transmitting a disease.
I, too, enjoyed the swan family. Perhaps a couple of pairs of latex gloves? Greasy hands, yuck! 🫤 Ah, life goes one.
I was sure I had gloves in my kit. Really frustrating that I'd forgotten/lost them. That Swan nearly broke my arm. Vicious animal. 🤣
Touché, did 22 miles in the heat this AM. Thought about my comment of the gloves, think I'll go through my trunk bag to make sure I've got gloves! (Before I comment 😉) They're useful for maintenance or giving first aid to others. I carry first aid gear, tools and spares. One irritating thing is the thump of its contents every time I hit a seam in the pavement. The sun here cooks the pavement which creates open fissures. They fill them with tar so it's thump, thump, thump! Maybe a layer of dense foam and repacking will help.@TimsTrikeTrips
I love church bells and would've slept through it. (Better sound than what we got every night in Nelson and 5 times a day). Back by the water. Back to work today - two days left of the week - but back to full week next Monday. 3 in 1 has done me for yonks.
Sad to say I'm a very light sleeper. Hence the rain, bells etc spoil my nights regularly.
@@TimsTrikeTrips sorry to hear that pal- hopefully you can catch up with some hard-core pillow action later. 😉👋
Eventually I get so exhausted that I can sleep anywhere 😴
Loved the drone shot of the canal and seeing the swan family. Great youare able to do your own mechanics. Stay safe.Tim.
Someone's got to do the mechanics. Most bike shops take one look at a recumbent and seem to think.its rocket science. It really isn't.
Beautiful ride but ya break downs are going to happen but it still sucks!😂
Yes, when you put in the miles you have to expect these things. I'm just glad I was able to keep going this time. I really was a very long way from anywhere at first.
welcome to an other episode of Tim gets lost in Europe ........ Haven't seen the Rine in a couple a couple of days........ So maybe you are truely lost 😉. Anyway, as long as you enjoy the ride it doesn't matter. But because of brexit you have to go back to the UK sooner or later I suppose. Until then .... see you in the next video.
Not all of Europe is in the EU. 😉 But yes, the tour will have to end one day.
I supose you've fixed the efneo drive now but I found this animation on youtube. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nYaHqbKkmpevYto.html
4:08 reminded me of the marshes
Ewwww, no. 🙄😁
One additional item... Here's the reason the area around Strasbourg is both German and French at the same time. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsace%E2%80%93Lorraine
Cheers Greg. Yes, I had read a bit about it myself. Can't blame the people for refusing to accept political boundaries eh!?
@@TimsTrikeTrips I guess they sort of made their own reality out of a boundary that keeps shifting with conflict over the centuries. I find it fascinating. You gave us a brief, first hand view of how they're doing it.
I recently setup my good old MSR hubba 1 person tent that I called home for about 6 months, I'm thinking of upgrading to this type as my girlfriend has shown interest in camping someday... would love it if you could do a review on it after or during the tour!
Certainly can. What more would you like to see?
Ahh seems like you missed the old centre of Strasbourg! I remember going there 3 years ago, it's really pretty there. Lots of these houses in German style. I mean I guess you've already seen many of them, but it's very pretty! Now you have to come back there once more 😉
I figured there must be more to it. But the Eurovelo didn't take me that way 🤷🏻♂️
Country number 3!!! Not bad! My folks in the Netherlands are having terrific weather now... I know it's been almost 3 weeks but hopefully it has... changed a little?
Yes I ve been getting a tan lately. Though the afternoon storms are quite drastic sometimes. 🌧👍
Thanks Once again Tim. Lovely and rrelaxing. Stay Safe
Glad you enjoyed it😉👍
Hi Tim, Has that tent ever leaked and do you have a problem with condensation? Thanks!
Leaked? Yes... but only because I put a small hole in it... now patched. Condensation? Always an issue. But then I've never had a tent yet that didn't 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks! I bought the American version of the one man tent, thus, no screen door and different colors. I haven't used it in the rain, but saw a few KZread videos that told me it leaks.
@@abingtonmg well after the weather I've had to endure over the last 4 or 5 weeks I can say, with some authority, its a quality item. I do occasionally spray the waterproofing solutions on it too though. Maybe that has helped 🤷🏻♂️
Sorry, I’ve been so busy will there be a playlist later? I’m gonna be slammed for ….wow. A while. Do you suppose that you might so that I can watch it all together later and catch up ?
These are already in a playlist on my channel. I may also put them altogether as a supercut one day. Thanks for watching.
I'm just looking at the roof's on all those houses and thinking "It must snow quite a bit there in the winter given how steeply they are angled."
Yes I had the same thought. Many of them have small hooks built into the roofing above the doors. I'm guessing it stops the snow from dropping onto you when you slam the door shut 😄
Nice … Tim’s TARDIS it even looks bigger inside than outside. Such a lovely day it was too. Looking forward to you next offering.
Thanks Chis. Yes there's more than enough room in there for me.
Looked like a really good riding day. Is that region still called Alsace-Lorraine? Changed 'hands' many times in the 19th and 20th centuries between France and Germany. Canal must have reminded you of your travels around your old home. That tent is much bigger on the inside than on the outside. Cheers!
Ah. Well done Leo. I just did some reading too. Looks like they were probably speaking the Alsation Dialect which sounds pretty German to the untrained ear. Thanks for that 😉👍
Liked the Dr Who tent sequence 😊. I never could figure out that series... And BTW, just where exactly is this trip going to take you? Our summer monsoon season has started. Day before yesterday was a downpour with puddles in places I'd never seen before! Now it's 104F with 40% humidity instead of the usual 20%. Thank goodness for AC😉. Pedal on mate!
Where? No idea. That's half the fun 🤷🏻♂️😄 I'm quite literally making this up as I go along. I'm still in and out of a monsoon myself 😉
Those houses and towns not only sound German but look German and almost British some of them - which would make sense. Just because you move the border it doesn't change the people, good for them, trei bien mes ami! Very Kraftwerk musik
Yes, it really didn't feel like France at all which, as you say, it shouldn't if the locals don't feel French either. 👍
Hi Tim, Already ep. 16, waaw. It feels as if you just started. But a gues your legs will tell a different story by now. So, how far have you pedaled so far, and how far still to go. Thanks again for the nice video of the beautifull houses and stunning scenary along the canal.
Up to the date of this video (June 4th?) I think I'd done 500+ miles. I'm still going today (June 25th). It'll go on for as long as I'm not bored I guess 😁 There really is no plan you see, ha ha.
@@TimsTrikeTrips until the end of the world 😁
