You would think that bomb would make them surrender but it took 2. The Japanese were a brutal foe. America could have taken over every country but decided to work with and rebuild. No country in history has ever had superior force and not decimated.

You make it sound like the Philippines was an American colony by, you know, saying that it was a former American colony. It wasn't. It was a Spanish colony which we snatched in the Spanish American war. We then granted the Philippines their independence years before the onset of the Pacific war. America is not nor was it ever a habitual colonizer.

All of the comments are how great the SAM operator was, or how stupid the pilot was. What everyone is missing is that 'stealth' is a magic trick and the technology, ie the olane, is a gimmick. The more times you do the trick, the more likely someone is going to figure it out, or you're just going to blow it and get caught. It only works, when you have positive control over most of the factors. Which is why its a first strike weapon, not a tactical one.

Hornets did not take out the communications station West of Karbala. B Co 2-101 Apaches did that a few days later. I was on the team that took it out.

Did Putin know this ? How about Kim Jon Un of N Korea . With the size of Nato and US nuclear arsenal , 80 % of Russia become Sahara desert . For N Korea , the country and people cease to exist . Map makers will be busy to redraw countries and borders .

The US did drop leaflets prior to the bombing between June and August. They did receive a warning. That being said, there was likely few that felt they could leave.

And yet, they still didn't t surrender. It took a second bomb. The Japanese were prepared to defend their land to the last person. An invasion could have cost millions of lives on both sides. Thanks to Truman for making tough choices, we didn't have to do it.
