    At that point of time, everyone could be a threat, because look at that map. Israel against all of those neighbours. They are just on Israel’s front porch, ready to Knock it down at any time with a coordinated attack, so being in their shoes (israel), I would understand the frustration and the decisions they had to make during that time. Remember, one time, they jammed the US communication in order to enter a war before. They jammed the IS communication so that they could do what they planned for their country themselves. Which actually worked, but it also affected their relations with its neighbours today.

    You failed to mention: the shooting of life rafts, both in water & still on ship, the audio tapes recorded by Israel saying it was an American ship, Israeli planes flew in circles around Liberty ALL MORNING close enough both crew and pilots were waving at each other, Liberty put another "holiday colours" flag up (a much larger US flag), crew had been sunbathing on the deck, Israel jammed both tactical & international distress frequencies (why would you do that, as attacking international distress frequencies serves no purpose in an attack & a violation of international law, unless you're hiding something &), only an ally would know the frequencies anyway, Israeli pilots & ground crew said: "we've done enough, let's leave something for the Navy to do. Pilots after dispensing all ammo & rockets, confirmed it was an American ship (again). 30 minutes later, Navy boats fired torpedoes at Liberty. They then came close to Liberty and fired armour piercing rouds at both lifeboats and the ship. After the attack stopped, only due to a Mayday signal being sent out. Washington then discussed sinking the Liberty to cover it all up as official documents show but the NSA. rejected the idea with an impolite reply. Survivors & their families forced to keep silent. President Johnson, the US's strongest pro israeli president leaked to Newsweek that Israel attacked the Liberty. Then leaked that Israel were going to sue him for blood libel and gross antisemitism! ANTISEMITISM!!! Israel then used blackmail on Washington, & testimonies from sailors were ignored in the inquiry, Napalm sample disappeared, no Israelis were interviewed and it exonerated Israel from blame. Israeli Ambassador to the US however sent a secret telegram to Israel was clearly guilty, citing the audio tape.

    Well if you can get away with attacking a US naval vessel, killing crew members (including shooting life boats!) and never being held accountable... I mean sh*t, seem totally plausible that it's subsequent government and army would go on to commit genocide for all the world to see, confident that they wont be held to account by the international bodies and processes designed to prevent genocide happening ever again... If Israel wasn't gifted $4B USD tax payer money annually (and it's been several billions for decades), and not allowed to play victim every time anyone rightfully accused them of their evil misdeeds, perhaps it may have been in a position of having to make genuine peace with neighbours...

    This is LITERALLY what a flase flag operation is!!!! This is how you do it in case anyone was wondering: - You hit your own ally (because you only care about yourself) - you deny you did it - you blame your enemy - and then watch them fight each other while you stay safe in the distance And when you actually fail to do that, your second option is to say your 'Sowoy 😢' and that it was just a mistake I can only imagine if another ally of the great great united states did the same thing will they get away with it the same way?

    @@eliad6543 you do have a point, but what's their importance to the United States exactly if you could explain to me? And as someone I can't recall his name now once said “Israel is the ally we don't need, giving us enemies we don't want and costing us money we can't afford” and I'll add to that “and hitting us hard when we don't suspect”. And regarding your last question, this was late in the war then, but they haven't realized that yet, because the battles were still ongoing and they could use the direct American involvement "as always" (the nuclear attack attempt alone probably won them the war at that time). And what do you mean by "Afaik"?

  • @eliad6543

    @eliad6543

    6 ай бұрын

    afaik = as far as i know Their importance to the US is that Israel is their only ally in the region, and in the Cold War they didn't want to lose the whole Middle East to Soviet influence. Same reason they didn't want to lose South Vietnam, South Korea.. etc. Also I disagree, Israel knew they were winning and somewhat surprised by how easy it was that time. So it's not like they were desperate and willing to take a risk. I personally think this was just overconfident carelessness. Soldiers in a war are generally taught to not spend too much time questioning whether to shoot. "If there's doubt, there's no doubt" and so on. At first they made a genuine mistake in identifying the ship, but after the first shot was fired, the lower-ranking commanders probably were too embarassed to stop shooting and admit their mistake in that moment, especially riding on the high of beating the shit out of the armies of Jordan, Syria and Egypt. It's real easy to fall into this whole "if we couldn't tell you're an ally first try - your problem" approach when you're feeling invincible while winning a massive war. And as for Israel being more of a burden than an ally.. No matter what they do, the US doesn't really get to choose. Unless it wants to deploy its own troops to fight Hezbollah, Hamas, and other allies of Iran. So it's a lot easier this way for the US. Whether it's a just dynamic or not is a whole different question - since the US is interested not only in Israel's survival, but specifically in the defeat of its enemies to beat back Iran, means the US won't necessarily want a peace agreement that doesn't involve the surrender of its enemies, even in a future scenario where such an agreement would be possible and good for everyone apart from the US.. @@majd_shoots

Isn't that exactly what happened in 73?, So please spare me the whole "we didn't see the flag properly and we just kept attacking the ship because we felt it was the right thing to do", no one believe this story because it is too ridiculous to believe. And secondly all the "Israel is their only ally in the region" and that they need it to fight Iran, etc, is also a piece of shıt argument because that would be a self-fulfilling prophecy of: we already knew that Iran would be sour on us because we helped butcher them for years under the Shah and that militant groups would spring up across the middle east from all the wars and dictators we installed there so we might need this little demon here just in case we ever wanted to make more enemies there..... And American troops are already deployed in the middle east in the thousands, and Israel fights none of their enemies for them, they just coward back like the sissies they are behind US protection, they have never deployed a single soldier to help the US with anything since 47, and I dare you to deny that And let me ask you, when was Israel founded and what have they done to everyone around them since then?, and when did Hezbollah, Hamas or the current Iranian regime establish themselves and out of what reason did they even exist? What did Hamas ever do to the united States ever since their establishment in 87?, one of their founders was a 8 year old boy in 1954 when the Zıonısts entered Gaza and killed every male who is 15 or above, what do you think such thing would do to a child? @@majd_shoots Obviously 1973 happened but the Israelis didn't have foresight then. So I think there wasn't a rush to get US support at the time of the attack on the ship, despite what you said. And attacking the ship was never the right thing to do - an explanation is not a justification, and I think my explanation for the incident was pretty good. It doesn't clear them from responsibility, but it does give ideas on what went wrong and how to avoid it from happening again. In general, I wasn't making moral statements here, saying that the US needs to fight Iran or not. What I said is the US *wants* to fight Iran, and needs Israel for that. I even agree with you on the self-fulfilling prophecy part, I just think it goes both ways. That's the problem with war in general. Heck, I even said the American interest was to defeat Iran, so the Israeli interest is prevented from becoming anything else at the risk of losing support, which sucks for Israelis in the first place. And they *are* helping the US practically speaking - attacking pro-Iran targets in Syria, for example. And as for Israeli war crimes and "the reason these groups exist in the first place" - to me there's only one valid criticism of both, and it is that *you can't buy paradise with blood* , no matter what. And everyone who thinks otherwise is able to justify doing things that will only make him more enemies, just as Hamas showed recently. It feels so wrong not to respond to atrocities with more of the same going the other way, but this is why we're in the shithole we're in now.

Furthermore, I believe this simply to be a case of "This is in our waters, we should kill it" which can be attributed to many incidents through the Six-Day war and previous conflicts, albeit they may have been genuine enemy vehicles, the fact no identification or attempts to raise communications when all Israeli naval personnel was attempting could figure out who it was were insignificant, despite them having 100% identification not long before? The USS Liberty did have proper markings and a US flag was flying from the mast area of the ship. 4. The helicopters came to finish off any survivors that might have been in the water as stated by the survivors. Sadly, a lot of Americans still do not know about this deliberate attack by our so called "ally" in the middle east. One more fact the Mirage III aircraft also used rockets to attack the ship along with their 30mm cannons. In addition the Israelis were jamming the Liberty so that a distress signal could not be sent out to the 6th fleet. There is also mention of a Soviet cruiser that offered assistance to the Liberty.

    Fhlostonparaphrase: I think he was using irony. Obviously, the US ship was not going to accept help from people that had just attacked them. The anger on board ship would have been palpable. Lots of strange factors here. The report of 30 knots speed from a ship not capable of that. The helicopters being able to communicate by radio with the ship, yet the torpedo boats and planes were not. The initial recognition of the vessel as American somehow being lost in subsequent events. Was the purpose of the vessel in those waters to interfere or block Egyptian radio traffic and this resulted in no initial radio identification between the ship and the planes and the torpedo boats? I could understand ammunition exploding on board and on shore being confused with gunfire. I'm wondering if the napalm attack created sufficient smoke to obscure the US flag being flown and the ships identification markings. To my untrained eyes, the US ship does look remarkably similar to the Egyptian ship. I am somewhat at a loss to explain the seeming absence of radio communication between the ship and the attacking planes. I don't think the Israeli forces would intentionally attack a ship of their closest Ally and benefactor. If they did they would risk US aid to Israel being cut. There would also be lots of people on board who would be able to identify the Israeli markings on the attacking planes. So those suggesting it was an Israeli ruse to gain more American involvement does not seem credible. It seems to me like a tragic blue on blue blunder, with people losing their lives or being injured. I can understand the anger and bitterness of the serving ship's crew. I would be angry as well. One can only express condolences to the families and friends of those that lost their lives and hope that all those injured made a speedy recovery.

    They were not allied in 1967, if anything the Six Days War was the reason the US looked at them as their greatest ally. Because they accomplished in six days what the US wanted with the Middle East for a decade. I repeatedly see this confusion over facts. Israel's greatest friend during this period were the French, not the United States. US-relations were just somewhat friendly but both sides viewed the other with suspicion. USS Liberty was almost assuredly taken out deliberately but in a plausibly deniable way. It was a big gamble, Israel at the time did a lot of bald faced gambles like this (maybe they still do?). Golan Heights was conquered by Dayan in spite of the UN''s call for cease fire.Whether the Israeli suspicions about the Liberty were true or not is likely something we won't learn for a long time.

    Admiral Thomas H. Moorer, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: "I have to conclude that it was Israel's intent to sink the Liberty and leave as few survivors as possible. Israel knew perfectly well that the ship was American." -- Dean Rusk, Secretary of State at the time: "The Liberty was flying an American flag. It was not all that difficult to identify, and my judgment was that somewhere along the line some fairly senior Israeli official gave the go-ahead for these attacks." Lieutenant General Marshall S. Carter, director of the National Security Agency at the time: "There was no other answer than it was deliberate." -- Major General John Morrison, NSA deputy director of Operations at the time: "Nobody believes that explanation. The only conjecture that we ever made that made any near sense is that the Israelis did not want us to intercept their communications at that time." -- Dr. Louis Tordella, the deputy director of NSA at the time: "I believed the attack might have been ordered by some senior commander on the Sinai Peninsula [where the massacres were taking place] who wrongly suspected that the Liberty was monitoring his activities." Tordella also scrawled across the top page of the formal Israeli "mistake" report, "A nice whitewash." -- Walter Deeley, the senior NSA official who conducted an internal NSA investigation of the incident: "There is no way that they didn't know that the Liberty was American." -- Captain William L. McGonnagle, the Liberty's commander: "After many years I finally believe that the attack was deliberate." -- Phillip F. Tourney, president of the USS Liberty Veterans Association and a survivor of the attack: "The Israelis got by with cold-blooded, premeditated murder of Americans." -- Richard Helms, Director of Central Intelligence at the time: "Your chapter on the Liberty was exactly right." -- George Christian, press secretary to President Johnson at the time: "I became convinced that an accident of this magnitude was too much to swallow." -- Paul C. Warnke, Under Secretary of the Navy at the time: "I found it hard to believe that it was, in fact, an honest mistake on the part of the Israeli air force units.... I suspect that in the heat of battle they figured that the presence of this American ship was inimical to their interests." -- David G. Nes, the deputy head of the American mission in Cairo at the time: "I don't think that there's any doubt that it was deliberate.... [It is] one of the great cover-ups of our military history." -- George Ball, Under Secretary of State at the time: "American leaders did not have the courage to punish Israel for the blatant murder of its citizens." "James Bamford has done more than any other individual to shed light on the National Security Agency and to promote public accountability of this intensely secretive organization, dating back to his landmark 1982 book The Puzzle Palace. The list of his reportorial coups to the present day is long and impressive . . . His new chapter on the Liberty itself contains significant new information and reporting." (I remind you that a combinded services attack - first from the Israeli Air Force at 2pm in a calm sea and 45 minutes later by 5 Israeli torpedo boats, requires high up political planning and approval. Again, U.S. military radio frequencies were jammed, only known to allies. These two attacks occured after 8 low level Israeli Air Force surveillance flights. Life boats were shot up, one pulled out of the sea. The Israeli Army helicopter that later hovered over deck had armed troops - not medics )

    Would you be able to provide us with which frequencies were actually jammed, or at least the band they were in? I am going to point out to others who might not be in the know... but radio signals in real life don't operate like communications in common science fiction where one faction has one set of frequencies and another has their own. In addition jamming frequencies requires a very large power source, somewhat proximity to what you want to jam (unless you have a very large power source), and enough intel to know which frequencies to actually jam. Jamming an entire bandwidth takes even larger powersource.

They decided to sink it anyway, first by jamming the distress radio call of USS Liberty, in which the frequency should only be known by allies. Jamming distress call is also an international war crime. Israel only stopped attacking when USS Liberty crews managed to circumvent the jamming and sent distress signal to fellow Americans. ALL surviving USS Liberty crews believed the attack was DELIBERATE, many kept on pressuring US government to recognize it as deliberate up to this day. Read the websites set up by the survivors.
