Thinking about just building a box out of 4x4s, 3 12' lengths would add up to ~$45 plus a sheet of 3/4 plywood for under the tank and sump. Add in a 2x4 for a couple of stretchers if I'm feeling anxious.

Sharp eyes! It's actually physical injury from breeding aggression. I've found this genus gets really feisty, and when their wounds heal over they look like this for a couple weeks then clear out. Been happening for years, though they never actually kill one another.

Any reason for the mix of filter and play sand? Or is that just for esthetics?
@Riffwaters20 күн бұрын
It's mostly aesthetics in this case. But the PFS also helps keep the substrate a bit less dense, which can be helpful sometimes. It doesn't compact down as much as play sand tends to do.

Yes, giant gouramies also like to eat plants. Here in my country Indonesia, farmers often feed their giant gouramies with the leaves of taro or giant elephant ear plant (Alocasia macrorrhizos) which is a type of Aroid jut like pothos. The leaves contain calcium oxalate crystals that can be extremely irritating to human skin, but fishes munch on them with no issue at all.
