Whitetail Habitat Solutions

Whitetail Habitat Solutions

Enjoy whitetail practices that have been used and proven thru the highest levels of possible experience. These strategies are based on the original concepts and teachings of Jeff Sturgis. No tip has been copied and each has been considerably developed, relied upon and defined in the field, in some cases, since the 1980s.

These concepts have not only been proven thru Jeff's decades of personal whitetail hunting success, but also through the experiences of over 1100 of his clients in 26 states since 2005.

While you may never choose to buy any of Jeff's books, attend his seminars, sign up for a habitat day or hire him to design your land, he offers this information free to you, so that you can discover proven experiences that have created an authoritative source for all things whitetail.

This is your one stop shop for decades-proven, original whitetail hunting, habitat and herd strategy concepts, straight from the source. Enjoy!

    I hunt with a crossbow. I enjoy it immensely. That's the only reason I need to give to anyone if any reason at all. But there are two big reasons. One, I've ruptured both of my distal biceps tendons in the last 3 years. Takes time for everything to come back after surgery. Two, I drive an hour each way to and from work. I work 12 hours a day, 60 hours a week minimum. I wake up at 430am and get home at 7pm. On my Friday off, I have twin 1 year Olds and a 3 year old. On my Saturday, I spend time with my family and putting time into projects over the summer so I can put time into hunting in the fall. I really do not have time to practice with a compound nor do I feel I could shoot one proficiently at this point. I choose to go with a crossbow because it not only makes me a better hunter and allows me to continue hunting but it gives me more time in the evening to spend with my 3 little girls which are worlds more important to me than proving I can kill a buck with a compound. I would love to eventually get back into a compound if for no other reason they are so much easier to handle in a treestand and carry but that's just not in the cards right now. If anyone has a problem with that.... ask me if I care. Go out and enjoy your time in the woods and don't concern yourself with everyone else. Life is too short.

    Hi Dylan! If you have safe locations you can house deer on your neighbors without too much threat of them spooking them, then a food plot on your land...a good sized one could bring to that spot every single afternoon and then give you a movement to hunt.

    In December, I hiked through 6 inches of crusty snow to look for patterns of how the deer were walking through my land. I saw limited hoof prints except in my clover patch. The deer were breaking through the snow to get to the clover which stayed green under the snow. By March, it was eaten down to the ground. No question in my mind that clover is the best late-season food. I have far too many alfalfa and soybean fields surrounding me. (West Salem, WI)

    The largest source of scent a human puts off is one of the most uncontrolable, your breath, I personally avoid meats 24 hours prior to hunting because every predator other than a human in the wild is a meat eater. No jerky snacks or anything meat based throughout the day, I also avoid spicy peppery foods because even humans can smell that at a distance on someones breath. Just my thoughts and preferences.

  • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

    That greatly depends on the location and how much other browse is available. For example in some areas white pines aren't touched...in other areas you have to cage them. Oaks are the same way. And if they are near a food plot then they have to be protected just about anywhere.

    How many acres would you need to say it's safe to put some food down low in the center of? I've got about 70 acres total but about 35 acres of woods, but the woods sort of looks like a trident, so it's not 35 acres that's square or round. The south side of this 70 acres is a road with a guard rail so that helps with knowing if something is coming from down there. I know it's hard without a picture, but at least knowing if there is a rule of thumb of acreage before you add food? Thanks 😊

    I dream of having land or permission where i can have food plots and stuff plus not worry about human pressure on the deer. Or even having permission on like 60 acres. I lost about 7 hunting areas in the past cpl years that i had from 13 yrs old to early 30’s. Everyone is selling their land cause they cant afford property taxes (this is being done on purpose by gov in many states if you own above 20 acres). Also seems like land owners aren’t allowing people to hunt their land (even if they don’t hunt) which is their choice but damn. Idk if past hunters did stuff to make them not trust anyone anymore or something. I even offer to do stuff for them or pay them to hunt there but not having any luck with that. It might be that I’m mild autistic and don’t always communicate like i want but I’ve gotten permission before so idk. All the public land is full of hunters even in archery. Last couple years has made me want to give up on hunting, 1st day of hunting to me use to feel like Christmas morning for a kid but last years it’s becoming meh to the point i barely go. If anyone has land by PA/Ohio border (i’m not far from WV either) that would let me hunt their land if i pay let me know. Im very respectful of people’s land and don’t mine at all to help out with whatever.

    I appreciate all you are saying...BUT. I hunted PA public land this past season for my 21st season since 93. Bradford area. I hunted 2 days and shot a nice buck on the 2nd day. Jen and I were hunting together and we saw zero hunters in 2 days. Shot a nice 3 or 4 year old buck and this was my 17th or 18th buck in 21 seasons out there....zero scouting. I also hunted public land in SE Ohio for 7 seasons...often bow and muzzleloader. In all those years I saw 3 other hunters near the truck and that's it. The point is...LOTS of public land to hunt with very few hunters...in fact most of it is. It just can't be easy...

  • @letsgobrandon7297
    @letsgobrandon72975 күн бұрын

    Yeah true there are nice public lands in some places in the state like Clarington state park by Pennwest college….that’s around 2 hours away tho. I Imagine eastern or middle Pa has the most forest from looking on google earth. Ever hunt in beaver county? Here on Pa/Ohio border there isn’t much public land for the amount of hunters but it does hold some giants on the private land and in some of the small patches of woods that hunters don’t hunt. Seems everything is getting messed up around here….our Turkey population has decreased 80% in the past 10 years in my area (not sure about rest of the state), just got email from PGC asking to report if i see a Turkey and where, that’s how bad it’s gotten. Warned them for last 5 years what was happening from all the coyotes, and nobody traps anymore so possums and coons eat many of their eggs.
