How To Plant Last Minute Switchgrass

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Does it seem like it is too late in the year to plant switchgrass? Think again! While there is a limit, that limit may be a lot later than you think. Here is how to plant switchgrass later during the Spring, even if you have barely begun!

    Holy crap the ticks are BAD this year. Walked 10 ft into the brush and came out with 5 ticks. Gotta buy more Sawyer tick spray.

    I’m in Central Pa and Frost seeded about 1/8th of an acre of your northern switch blend back in probably Febuary and of course have been checking it about every week this past month and I’m starting to get some weeds coming up and can’t tell for sure if there’s any switch coming up. Just wondering if I can get another spraying of glyphosate in without harming the switch and when I should really be expecting that switch grass to sprout. Thanks for any info Jeff!

    Oh boy, I would not spray any Glyphosate on it at all. My own switchgrass germinated in the last 10 days and I wouldn't be surprised if we are behind you...

    Weather is delaying me here in South Louisiana. I'm ready to go but the areas I need to plant screening are being flooded with rain. It's looking like I may have to spray again with grass growing back since I sprayed about 28 days ago. Swamp land troubles I guess, hoping I get it down in time and it has enough time to grow by the season opening in October.

    Funny enough Jeff, I had the same idea and ultimately a question for you in mind, having some areas dozed off along roads to screen off roads within our property, I was curious if using simazine on that bare soil would be worth it. does quinclorac smoke our everything but switchgrass? or whats its specific too? also, if switch is above the weeds but there are weeds underneath should I bother mowing?

    Thoughts on putting a 10 acre field into switch and then carving out diversity pockets? Fallow field conversion that has nothing but warm season grass

    Hi Caleb I like where you are going with that strategy! What I've found to be the easiest is to surround that field in switch...20-50' wide depending on human intrusion locations...and then create pockets of switch on the inside that are not more than a 1/4 to 1/2 acre in size and equal roughly 50% of the area. Then the area around the switch you can let go to early successional growth, plant pockets of shrubs like we do from big rock trees, plant pollinators or any combination of non-grass growth.

    Can switchgrass be broadcast into and existing feathered field edge? I'm letting the edges of and old farm field grow up with native stuff. I've hinge-cut trees along the field and laid them out into the field and I'd like to add something to keep the feathered edge standing into the winter months. Would switch be something beneficial to add into those feathered areas?

    Hi Jeff. Please explain why simazine won’t impact the pre-emergent switchgrass seed but will affect pre-emergent weed seed.

    That's above my pay grade, ha. Never liked chemistry in school...or out. BUT, it won't if applied in amounts up to 4 quarts per acre. The cool thing is there are MANY online sources discussing how using Simazine won't harm switchgrass going back 15 years or more....if applied up to 4 quarts per acre or less. I've personally seen 20 quarts per acre hinder switchgrass growth tho.

    Hi Jeff! Great video as always! When you say 8-10 pounds per acre it’s hard to translate that to a border around the plot when sometimes you can’t really measure that in acres. We have a 2.5 acre plot surrounded by woods that needs switch all around the outside of it. When broadcasting for the border of plots how wide do you normally make them and what setting do you put your spreader on? Thanks

    You can always figure out acres if you have a length and a width. Just take the total length of your screen and multiply it by the width of that screen. Then take that number and divide it by 43,560 which is how many square feet are in an acre.

  • @AC-ut8pl

    @AC-ut8pl

    Ай бұрын

    Then take that answer and multiply it by 8 or 10 which is the pounds/acre ratio, and that will give you how many pounds you need to plant for your screen.
