Ultimate No Till Food Plot Planting Recipe

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Ultimate No Till Food Plot is the easiest and most universally available of food plotting for deer, that you can plant. No tractor, no tiller no disc? No problem. Do you have a tractor, disc and tiller? Awesome! No matter how much equipment you own or how large of a food plot program that you plant, the Ultimate Food Plot system I originated in the early 2000s, is for you! From weed control to June buckwheat plantings to seeding, crushing and spraying for a portion of the final no till food plot steps, here is the complete recipe for making sure that you get your Ultimate No Till Food Plot planted correctly. Make sure not to stray from this decades proven planting method because like my mock scrape practices and all of my other original strategies, this no till food plot recipe is the best way to get the job done.

I planted my rye last fall & the deer kept it trimmed all the way until spring green up. I sprayed it two weeks ago & will be planting the buckwheat the 1st week in June. I'm very excited to see the results.

I am totally hooked and am so appreciative of the amount of information you provide in your videos. I live in an area where allot of people will shoot the first buck they see and baiting with corn is everywhere. I usually can manage a good buck every year but after watching your videos I have huge plans for next year. Once I am mobile in a few weeks I am going to start spraying and killing weeds and prepping for next spring and next season i may even try throwing out a bunch of winter rye in August but I wanted to take a minute to say Thank you for getting me thru this difficult time. Your videos get my blood pumping and I am excited for next season because of your videos. Thank you so very much Jeff!

A tip if folks don't want to spend the $500-$600 on the maxx roller it has worked great for me using a lawn roller also plastic and fairly tough, but cost around $140! Since it is getting a spraying after rolling anyway, the key is that one is not mowing it and simply rolling it down(as you stressed in the video) giving even residue coverage.

I have access to some acreage on some hunting properties where I can plant food plots, but my enthusiasm may be bigger than my wallet. For those of us who have not planted food plots of any significant size, how much should we budget per acre for chemicals, seed, fertilizer and lime. (I realize that it will vary depending on what is planted and what soil tests reveal for lime and fertilizer needs) A cost estimate will sure help determine what we can an cannot realistically plan to do in a given year. Also, do you take soil tests every year? Again, thank you, I appreciate your videos.

I’ll be doing this on a 60 Acre area we have in nw mn. High deer density. Has some good locations that have already open grassy areas within the aspen woods that I would like to food plot. I’m not comfortable burning. Would you skip the buckwheat and just use the grass as a thatch bed? Or would I need to mow the grass down and kill it with gly in order to plant buckwheat. I’m concerned about soil content with the buckwheat seed. Thanks. I’ll look for your response. And thanks for the video. Side note. I have a pull behind mower and an Atv sprayer and hand spreader.

Jeff.....I have an old no till drill. If I drop the seed on the soil vs. spread with a hand held spreader, how do you think that will work out? I can set the coulters to 0. I can even set to seed packers to a light setting as well.

Hi Jeff, I do happen to have a 6’ Crimper and wondering if we would need to use glyphosate on the buckwheat after going over it with the crimper or if the crimper would be sufficient to terminate the buckwheat. Thanks for the help!

Hey Jeff! One quick question, my field is all switch grass, so I just spray that then I’m good to plant and pack? I’ll obviously keep switch grass also I have a small parcel so my plot won’t be very big! Thanks so much!

Jeff, I'm limited to the buckwheat/winter rye rotation to build my poor sandy soil in northern Michigan. You suggest approx 7 weeks between the buckwheat planting and the next planting. However, if that second planting is only rye and not beans and peas etc, do I delay the buckwheat going in the ground by a month and risk drought or can the rye go in the ground on month earlier than the labor day time frame? I just know that I don't want that buckwheat getting too old and going to seed and I can't kill the buckwheat before seeding the rye because it won't reach the soil with the buckwheat laying down.

Good question. I am in the same predicament (building poor sandy soil in Northern Michigan). My plan was to plant buckwheat on 1 July, mow it and till it under September 1st, then winter cereal rye on 2 September. Then back to buckwheat on 1May.

Jeff, I am working on a small hunting plot in wooded, central MN. I can not get a cultipacker to my plot. If I kill standing buckwheat with spray (or wait for a killing frost) prior to broadcasting seed, am I gaining anything?

Jeff, I'm not sure if you have answered this question yet but what type of peas do you recommend planting? Will Austrian or Cow peas work? Also I'd like to thank you for all of your amazing food plot videos! Starting next year I'm doing away with my Soybeans and going 100% with your no til method. I just received my packer maxx HD in the mail last week and already got an acre of switch frost seeded. I can't wait for spring to get here. Thanks again!!! Frank Southwest PA

Jeff, I'm going to do soy beans this summer, could I add brassicas to it there the end of August September time frame? Or would you suggest something different to add to the soy beans? On a small parrsale maybe five acres but it has access to hard woods bottom on one side and fescue fields on the other with big bedding area to the north and a lake to the south. Great job as always. Keep it up?

I have an area in a cattle pasture I’m hoping to do this. It’s basically a lawn right now. If I sprayed it off and then broadcast the buckwheat, do you think it will get enough soil contact?

Been watchign a lot of videos on this and have a big question. Im in west texas and doing a few small food plots. Area is surrounded by cotton. Our summers are Hot and dry/ 20-25 inches of annual rainfall. In summer, there isnt as much browse for deer because of the hot dry conditions. Could I do this same rotation, but also combine Lab Lab to the buckwheat to provide good summer food options and still roll it down/spray it after throwing the fall seed into it?

Jeff, So I am in Kentucky and didn't kill the winter rye early and it will be 4-5' tall by the time I need to plant my Buckwheat. I have time before I need to plant, what do you recommend I do with the rye. Should I spray it now and then plant in mid June? Or should I try to mow over the seeds? I'm using a pull behind DR mower behind my ATV. I know you mentioned mowing is not a good option but want to do what gives me best chance of success. Thanks and keep up the amazing content!
