    Here in Iowa I've been doing the winter rye into beans in the fall when they yellow up. Then spray it off and and drag in beans. Works great and holds moisture well. Then put a side plot of brassicas that we burn the field off after spraying. I'd love to see how well corn does. Most people have always told me corn needs a lot of nutrients to be successful.

    I am becoming an addicted viewer of your videos! Thank you!! I do want to make a comment ... I have not planted a single thing yet, but I did hear you say one thing that you may want to consider. I was in Bismarck ND last year and spent an hour with Gabe Brown. He is a no-till farmer. He does not use Round-up ready corn in his fields. He says that he has observed the deer in his neighborhood leaving his neighbor's corn (which is roundup ready corn) and coming to his corn. He claims that deer prefer non GMO corn. He says that they know the difference. Perhaps if deer hunters try non-GMO corn, we may have an advantage over the acres and acres of Ag fields that surround our woods.

    Question... We have spent many years doing spring through summer plots with clover and clover mixes. We do rye, oats, chicory in fall. We've been discussing the theory that we are wasting our time doing the spring and summer plots and that we should really just focus on starting a no till system for just the fall and winter plots. Would it be worth it to continue the summer plots?

  • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

    Typically it isn't worth it all unless trying to build a deer herd. It doesn't help the deer herd unless you are in the arid southwest and you have to spend a lot of resources to do so. The vast majority of the time it does more harm than good to both you and the local deer herd.

Do I have to either spray the oats to kill them - or do I have to cut them like crimping does to kill them? • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

    @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

    Hi Kristoff! It's easy to get conflicting info because most online deliver practices they heard from someone else, and then confuse the message because they lack the practical experience to properly deliver the message in the first place. When it comes to seeding into oats or anything else, it boils down to how much debris is in the field...thatch, height of oats, wheat, etc. In the spring if the grain is short (under 10-12") you can seed into it easily, as the seed will all get to the soil. Then, there isn't enough grain debris or shading to prohibit germination and growth. BUT, you just have to spray Glyphosate on the weeds to kill it. You can do this with even tiny seeds like clover, birdsfoot trefoil, chicory, etc. with taller grain like 18"-2', you can seed big seeds into like beans, and then spray and kill. You can even mow it down over the seeds if your mower doesn't clump. If it's later in the summer and the grain is 3-4' tall with a viable seed head...you are in trouble. The best thing to do there is till, wait for germination of the grain seed head for 2-4weeks, then kill and plant. You have to get seed on soil and sun to the germinating seed after rain. Many different ways to skin a cat 😊 Keep in mind too, some may tell you that you have to crimp, because they may be partnered with a company that sells expensive crimpers. Let the buyer beware when it comes to online deer habitat and hunting advice... I hope that helps!

    We need to figure out a way to do this without RoundUp. No point in venison filled with glyphosate. Great video though

    The amount of chemical sprayed food plots deer forage on makes up a small precent of what the deer actually consuming . If you're worried about deer eating chemical sprayed crops better not hunt anywhere near AG lands

    Don't eat the seed with roundup on it, but eat the deer that ate the seed with roundup on it. Hunting made better through toxic chemicals...................geesh!
