Do not feed the bears, it is a death sentence for the bear. They get comfortable with people and then they’re put down as a “problem bear” , and the fines are very heavy to the feeders. Enjoy them from a very safe distance as they can run way faster than you. Come and enjoy our Island paradise, if you like being out doors there’s a ton of great activities to do.

FYI... Beach fires of the sort shown in this video are not allowed on Tofino beaches. They've been banned since before this video was even posted. Propane fires are allowed as are vented wood burning fire rings that lift the fire off the sand.

Jaco Beach is a very popular destination, be very aware of rip tides, many deaths, and I have seen warning signs taken down . I experienced one, they are no joke, also lot's of crime. On the way many people stop at the crock bridge and their cars get robbed of everything.

You think you can see the entire island with a 2 month vacation? Haha, I have lived here for my entire life 60 years this July and I have not seen every part of the island, there are many places that you want and must see but you need a 4x4 to get there but it is well worth it.

Just for entertainment purposes, tell people on the island that you’re from Alberta and watch their attitudes towards you change. Most pride themselves on being all “inclusive and accepting” but they generally are anything BUT that towards their neighbours to the east. It wouldn’t really matter except it kinda flies in the face of being so “inclusive and accepting.” It’s not the case with everyone of course but there’s a very strong flavour of that. I know many people who work in the oilfield in Alberta who come from the island and they have to make up a story about what they do for work so their neighbours don’t shun them for it. It’s the only place in the world where I’ve been yelled at (on a few different occasions) while in traffic, just for the colour of my licence plate. But you’re right, the island is a beautiful place and most of the people are as well. I hope we can all be more accepting of others right here in our own country. We may not always agree on everything but we need each other.

THETIS LAKE SAFETY WARNING: Please DO NOT suggest to tourists to "swim out to the island." Every single year, some foolish tourist/visiting International student decides to try it & guess what?? SOMEONE DROWNS every darn year. Besides, there are MANY LAKES on our Island, go up island & leave it for us locals plz.

Most roads are 60 km/hr? Hmmm…not anywhere that I can think of except urban areas. Hwy 19 is 110 km/hr from Parksville north and 80 or 90 for most of even the Malahat (except for a short stretch through the goldstream area. Granted, on a trip from Qualicum Bay to Victoria (175 Km), you will average around 80 km/hr. The highway is mostly 4 lane but not a freeway and goes through Ladysmith and Duncan and there are numerous traffic lights to contend with. Google maps says it will take 2 hrs 36 minutes, where it normally takes me 2 hours pretty much on the nose and I’m travelling with the flow and not being aggressive.

In the summer the ferries are busy and reservations are just a rip off, be prepared to wait, avoid the weekends, also the food is terrible and expensive! Everything is expensive in BC especially Vancouver Island. The best way to really see the Island is with a 4x4 or offroad bike and go camping with the bears and cougars. Avoid places like Tofino!

if you go swimming when the tide comes in, the water is warmer, especially at rathtrevor in parksville just be careful where you set up blankets and chairs because when the tide comes in it comes in fast. and there are a lot of bears and cougars on the island so be careful out hiking, chances are slim to come across any but they are there.

Yes, reserving a spot on the ferry for a mere $18 is better than just driving to the terminal and hoping to get on. But a MUCH better option is to PREPAY for your ferry ride in advance, on the BC Ferries website. The $18 fee is waived completely, and if you reserve a less popular time, you can get on the ferry with your car for as little as $60.

As someone who lived on Vancouver island their whole life. I wouldn’t recommend Thetis lake sure it’s cool if you plan on paddle boarding swimmer or kayaking to the island but I you plan on swimming near the beach it gets really busy. I would recommend going in the morning if you want to go to thetis lake.

Many of the roadways are narrow and winding, with no sidewalks so don't ride your bikes, or walk, in anything other than single file at the edge of the road, and use any available off-road trails. Just because it's a vacation destination, the cars aren't made of marshmallow. DON'T forget you are visiting someone else's home, not a theme park. Treat the place and its people with respect.
