    Glastonbury isn't about the music, it's about being there and experiencing it in the moment. Went there in 90 and 92...the crusty days.

    You've just validated what I've been saying for quite some time now I feel like all art whether drawn or musical or poetical is created subjectively but it's always been viewed objectively whether it's a paint or a song or a musical score we humans are very judgmental if you don't play like McLaughlin and you play more like Keith Richards somehow your inferior when music as well as any other form of Art is there to invoke emotion and to tell the story to take you on a ride that's why I prefer free jazz over culture jazz because of the emotion the spontaneity of the music the jam that's what we had in the 70s and arguably late 60s were performers would take a 6 minute song go out on stage and turn it into a 20 minute song like the Allman Brothers they were free jamming rock and roll they didn't care about giving you the same song that's on the recording everybody had their moment in the Sun they painted a different picture at every venue they could play the same song night after night and it'll be different night after night that was the beauty of the music how did they feel that night what were trying to portray in their music you can always go back and listen to the record and hear the song note for note perfect I'd much rather listen to an imperfect Shania Twain then a lip syncing Don Henley or Beyoncé I am a human and I want to embrace Humanity in all its imperfections which makes each reflection unique and beautiful it is truly our imperfections that's our true beauty and inspiration thank you again for saying what I've been thinking for a very long time with Auto-Tune I know things have their place but at least leave the computers away from the live performance I'll still want front roast seats to the worst performance of The Rolling Stones and I'll be happy as a pig in sloth keep up the good work don't get discouraged

    'diversity' is a strength. Andy Edwards [a rancid Cultural Marxist] helped murder modern popular music [especially rock music], and here he is soy-pleasuring himself as the thought of all these 'diverse' acts at Glastonbury.

    Glad you mentioned VDGG. Funny Story. My first purchase of them was 1970 The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other, just after hearing ELP Pictures at an Exhibition. Curiously , I never thought anything wrong with the record, as the first track began Darkness 11/11 with a repeating noise which I assumed was intentional. After hearing DSOTM and the starting heartbeat at the same repeat rate, I assumed Pink Floyd was copying VDFF using a different noise, and was appalled. IT wasn't until recently, listening to youtube and that song again, that I realized it was the pressing. Its a little late to get a replacement.

    You may have already noticed that I'm watching this video in stages. And so you don't think I only say bad things (even jokingly), here's a good one: I loved the way you talked about Jethro Tull. Bravo! On the other hand, regarding the Van Der Graaf Generator, you said that there are no virtuosos. I understand what you mean, but I believe that one should not disregard Peter Hammill's lyrics. He doesn't just write lyrics for songs. He's a true poet! One of the very few in 20th century music. Can a person be a virtuoso with words?

  • @AndyEdwardsDrummer
    @AndyEdwardsDrummerСағат бұрын

    I agree. Hammill is a virtuoso singer...yes. I should have said this.

    Yes indeed. I like your perceptive comments about Hackett in Genesis. This is how I summarise the classic line up - Gabriel told a story, Banks added the melody, Rutherford underpinned it, Collins drove it forward; and Hackett lit the flame that turned it into gold. You read it here first, offered freely to prog lovers everywhere

    I always thought of Beato and Neely as being more than just virtuosity, And it is useful to analyze songs in a standard way. But I take your point that there's a huge gap between a list of a song's features and what makes it great. And most of those videos skip over the gap

    It's really sad... not that she is untalented but the hype around her and her music is incredibly out of any reality for quality. Next week she will have two concerts here in Zurich, all in all about 100-150k fans who want to see her in and around the stadium. The neighbourhoods will be shut off from the rest of the city, traffic stopped, and even for to hear her from outside of the arena you have to pay. I don't even have the slightest clue who are these "fans" - who does she attract? It is the same venue where Bruce, the Stones, AC/DC, U2, Bon Jovi, Macca and other big rockers were playing and it was always a big party in and around the arena but not like that. She is hyped up like no one else before. I don't even know a single song she sang - and don't know anyone who does actually.

    Agree that by the mid 1980s the rock era had achieved its its peak, marking the high-water mark date with Live Aid seems appropriate. Well done, in my humble opinion.

    You were off by a couple of years for Yes doing their solo albums. Late 1973 was when topographic oceans was released. Followed shortly by relayer. It was after the first relayer tour that they took time to do the solo albums. I think Steve Howe was first in the fall of 75 followed by Chris squire, and then the rest of the band released theirs in '76. When I was first listening to this we were calling the music either orchestral rock or classical rock. I always thought the term progressive started being used so that it wouldn't be confused with classic rock.

    Oh stop being so serious...its a KZread video where I discuss what i think the best Mahavishnu tune is...on a deeper level this videos question the object/subject divide in art. The asanine thing to do is to fall down oneside of that divide then potificate from that position.

    The 1st 3-names listed @ the 26 min mark, are the BEST 3 NAMES for an aspiring drummer to LISTEN TO. TONY WILLIAMS is probably the LEAST talked about "great" that there is, & i dont understand that. He was playing with MILES DAVIS @ 17 Y.O.

    The title should have included something like "classic era". Its all first generation progressive bands. I think some more modern (although not that modern any more) bands like Dream Theatre might rank in an overall top 30. Too un-English to count with Andy's audience?

    Those patrons must have been in Gong's Universe to put Led Zep in a prog list . Really ? wonder what Robert Plant must think about that or the others . In that retrospect I could say that numerous bands have had some kind of proggy numbers on one of their albums , but for that reason they don't become a prog band persé. Supertramp is more prog than Zep ( which is a blues/rock band ) , Beatles or more proggy , Oldfield is more prog , The Heep are ? HELL even Alice Cooper & Beefheart are more prog than Zep. No , no , no ...Daevid Allen , Chris Squire , Keith Emerson , Greg Lake, Alan White and all the others turn in their grave hearing that Zep is Prog.
