Hello! My name is Mark and welcome to my garden! Join me as a muddle my way through transforming my allotment garden from 6ft tall weeds to a veritable horticultural paradise.
My garden is in Zone 8 in the Central Belt of Scotland. I'm using a mix the No Dig approach perfected by the gardener Charles Dowding and also more traditional beds..
Join me as I attempt to sow and grow a whole array of wonderful fruit, veg and flowers. This is a combination of my favourite crops together with some experimental ones I've never tried before.
I am also a regular contributor to The Potty Mouth Garden Club podcast/video!
Happy gardening,

I didn’t do this, this year and now regretting it 😂 but I have definitely started in containers in the greenhouse to give them a boost. Well worth it 🥂
Thats the nicest looking harvest ive seen!!
Are you using the big U shaped bed that you installed a few months ago mate?
Sure am. Its got courgettes, leeks and nasturtiums in it this year. You'll get a sneak peak of this in tomorrow's video and then a proper look at how things are going in the plot tour video which should be out around the 7th July 👍🌱👍 Last year it had squash in it and had some great results 👍👍👍
@@marksallotmentplot awesome thanks for the reply mate. Good luck for the rest of the season 👍🏼👍🏼
@MrMonero cheers bud 👍

Lovely harvest there Mark 🥔🥔. Is a struggle at the mo keeping mine watered 😅😅
Thanks Joe. With you on the watering had to give the ones I have left a good watering at the weekend as the leaves were just starting to wilt ever so slightly 👍🌱👍
I am about to harvest my Caledonian Pearl tonight as they look like yours. First time growing these so hopping for a good yield
Great harvest Mark. I like to grow my tatties in buckets because I always spear them when digging them from the ground. Plus no sticky soil on them, which makes cleaning/prepping for dinner much easier. Happy gardening 🙂
Totally with you on the spearing when digging them up. I've done that so many times 😊 Think I'm a complete convert to doing all of them in buckets now, even the main crops. 👍🌱👍
I enjoyed watching your potato harvest. I also enoyed how yo never run out of words to say😂so awesome. Thank you
Thanks Leonore, glad you enjoyed it 👍🌱👍
That's a really good harvest. You've convinced me to plant a few buckets up earlier next year. My earliest this year, went in two weeks after you planted these so I'm still waiting for fresh spuds.
I think the little boost they got from being in the greenhouse for a couple of weeks before braving the outside was a big help.👍🌱👍 Wonder if I could get them even earlier as well next year 😊 Only one way to find out 😂
i ment .5 kilo
i got 500grams of Casablanca Ayrshire 1 potato 10" pot lastweek
That sounds like a pretty decent haul you get there James 👍🌱👍
R reet Mark ya cucumber a would water from the top for a few days just to make sure the capillary matting is doing it's job Barry @2 Lads at the Lotty
Gave it a good watering and its still looking a bit sad for itself. It'll be a miracle if this one pulls through 👍🌱👍
I had really good crop this year. Disappointed with the taste of pentland javelin. However, the rocket variety have an amazing 'new potato' taste
Potatoes are the one thing that seems to be going well this year. Lots of other things knocked by the early dodgy weather. Hoping for a half decent summer so things pick up a little. 👍🌱👍
Hi Mark. Nice return from your two buckets 👍 May many more follow. Im going to check when I put my firsts in. Elaine 🌱 Oh the suspense lol🥔🥔🥔
Thanks Elaine, I was pretty chuffed with the harvest from the buckets 😊 Think I'm pretty much a convert to doing all the potatoes in buckets now. So much easier than planting them in the ground 👍🌱👍
Good use for the bench. As they arent 100% water tight from what Ive found out from the one I have. But will keep off 98% of the damp.
lovely spuds x
Thankyou 👍🌱👍
Lovely spuds 😊🥔🥔🥔
Thanks Tamsin 👍🌱👍😊
I have just ordered two of these large U shaped beds and two of the small V shaped or Heart shaped beds. I am at my allotment as we speak unboxing them and checking all the parts and just about to build the first of the four. I’m starting with one of the small 17” tall V shaped beds. Judging by the amount of boxes and parts though I think building both V shaped beds and the two large U shaped beds that you have in this video, well I am going to be here for a while. Should hopefully be worth it in the end though. It’s going to totally transform my allotment plot. I’ve only just taken on the plot and it is in a right Sorry state. Full of weeds, paths too narrow to use, old wooden beds everywhere that are falling apart, piles of old wood and other stuff. It does have a decent shed on it though so a good start. As soon as I pull out the rest of the old rotten wooden beds and get the last of the weeds under control hopefully the fun will begin. 🌱
The metal beds are brilliant. They look so good once they're put together and planted up. Hopefully they'll last a lot longer and take less maintenance than the wooded ones as well. I've been thinking about getting another couple for next year. Taking out a couple of the older wooden beds and replacing them with the metal ones. 👍🌱👍
@@marksallotmentplotthanks for the reply mate. Yea they certainly seem to be good. I have used in ground beds before, also raised beds that I built from expensive Cedar Wood, loads of containers too but never metal. I spent a long time thinking it over and finally decided to take the plunge and shell out the cash on four of these metal beds. Time will tell if I did the right thing. So far the only negative that I have heard is that over time the metal brace bar (that stops the panels from bowing outwards) can rust and fail after a few years of being constantly damp under the soil. Hopefully this isn’t the case and they do last close to the 20year advertised life span expectancy.
Had my first harvest a fortnight ago (East Riding Yorkshire) planted mid March - 'International Kidney' variety. Not a big yield per bucket but oh so tasty!!
Nothing quite like the taste of freshly picked potatoes 👍🌱👍 Hopefully lots more to come over the summer ☀😎
Fantastisch Good work Mark you the best te oogsten aardappelen poten wow Thans te video Top weekend 👍✔️🤗🍹⛅🍹🥔🌻🧤
Cheers Luc 👍🌱👍
we’ve done a tester of our charlottes, good but defiantly need a few more weeks yet.
Looks like another few weeks needed for the couple of buckets of charlottes I've got on the go as well. Hopefully towards the middle/end of July they'll be good to go 👍🌱👍
I did a experiment planted some spuds in ground and some in a large bucket harvested them in bucket them in ground nothing as always happy gardening Richardx
my wife planted two potato skins as an experiment in a shallow bed, just to see what happened , low and behold they took and because they soil was only four inches deep she was shocked to find five massive potatoes ( unknown asda spuds)
Just harvested some yesterday, didn’t weigh them but they were excellent . 👌
Good stuff! Can't beat the taste of freshly harvested potatoes 👍🌱👍
Hi Mark, I reuse my compost too 😊 I haven't harvested mine yet, they are Charlotte, 2nd early variety. Only a few leaves have started to turn yellow so, I'll wait another week or two. They are lovely potatoes you have harvested. Another great video. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Thanks Christine. Had some of them for dinner last night and they were delicious. Can't beat the taste of freshly picked potatoes 😊 Charlotte are a great potato. Think I might have a bucket of them hiding somewhere as well. Can't wit for them to be ready 👍🌱👍
Fantastisch Good work mark patatoes wow best fried te thans the video Top weekend 🌿👍🌤😎🥔🌻🍹
Thanks Luc 👍🌱👍
Lifted mine yesterday-Swift Elsie’s-16lbs - really tasty 😋
16lbs of Swift is a great result. Can't beat the taste of freshly harvested new potatoes 👍🌱👍
Wow, Marches already?! Ours is the 2nd week of August here in Sanquhar, Dumfries and Galloway. I live next to the pub that hosts the many Marches parties and festivities, and of course it opens at 6am to slake the thirst of the Reveille walkers on the Saturday. So it’s weeks of revellers outside my window until the wee hours from next month until the big bash on the Saturday.
I don't blame you for ordering them online, that's so daft! I do the Specsavers lens mail but they have always provided me with the lenses in store while I wait for my new prescription to be delivered. I like it as it means I get free sight tests and money off glasses but I have also ordered online before with no issues
I buy my contacts online - its about £13 for 30 pairs from Daysoft lenses - they're dailies
I cried when I seen my tomato plant leaves curling up like over night,,the soil is moist but not wet,but there are gnats in the soil...lots of them,,
TToP are little diva's. Mine are the smallest of all 12 varieties I've got on the go. However I promise they will take off in the heat and the flavor is amazing. Similar to Sungold but does not split as easy. They were Wild Boar Farms new release last year. Mine ended at about 7' tall late year and required daily or at minimum every other day picking.
Hiya Mark. My TTOP are a little backward in coming forward too. Getting there though. My mum was from the Scottish Borders and in my younger years I rode the marches (common riding) loads of times. Mostly Melrose, Galashiels, Kelso and Selkirk. Never did Linlithgow though. It was great fun. Looks like we are in for a batch of good weather at last. Thank goodness. All the best. Mags
Hey Mags, the TOTP are looking a bit sad but glad to hear I'm not the only one 😂 JB's are a bit on the small side as well so at least we're all in the same boat. 👍🌱👍
Hey Mark Glad the weathers warmer, hope it is for you. Fab update 👏🏽🌱
Thanks 😊 Hoping this is the start of the better weather and things actually start to grow 👍🌱👍

First
Just got our first 'proper' greenhouse, all the plants are so happy
Will be good to see how they grow
Cheers Lee. They've taken a bit of a knock in the last couple of weeks with the cooler weather we've had over night but hoping they'll pick up again soon. 👍🌱👍
Hi Mark, very good looking arches and I'm looking forward to seeing how your squash grow upwards. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Thanks Christine. They've taken a wee bit of a knock in the last week or so with the low over night temps we've had. Hoping for a few sunny days and they'll be back on the go 👍🌱👍
Have you considered a small pond, it'll attract frogs and hedgehogs which both love slugs.
Funny you should mention that!👍🌱👍 I've been thinking about putting a pond in recently and think I might have just the spot for it. Might be a project for the Winter time though when things are a little quieter
My compost area looks like a bomb has hit it. Trays, pots etc etc. Absolutely untidy. Nontheless, the plants need to be planted out and I'll tidy later. 5 degrees, id be looking for fleece to cover stuff . Terrible weather this year. Oh wow, your storage bench is fab. I must have a look at those. Elaine 🌱
just the sort of bench i need for my pots and bags will have to save up for 1 whats the name of the lettuce you got sown in the green house
I feel like I'm finally catching up although things are not growing as well as last year but I've already had 3 cucumbers which is a bonus ❤. Jo Devon 🙂
👍❤️❤️😁❤️❤️👍
Health and safety, namely lawyers, stop supermarkets watering just in case theres and water spill and accident 😅

i bought a recliner chair this year but every time i sit down i see something else to do!
Think if I had a recliner every time I sat down in it I would fall asleep😊 Saying that I would need it to stop raining first 👍🌱👍
Love the bench! Taking time out to just chill and relax is really important. Sitting amongst the greenery & watching the bees etc is really good to lighten stress
