A shout out to Project Diaries. When using a beer trap, find two identical containers which fit inside each other (paper cups, used butter tubs, etc). Drill/pierce holes in one of the containers and place it inside the other one. Fill with beer. When you need to get rid of the dead slugs, simply lift out the inner container and let it drain into the other one. Toss the slugs into your compost heap and replace the holey container back into the other one.

Previously, I did do a beer trap. The one I had was a cup that you pushed into the soil which contained the beer, and a sort of umbrella over it so it protected the cup from filling up with rain. One morning, I remember seeing one slug trail which went straight across my patio (literally 10 feet) making a bee-line for the trap. It did catch many slugs so I would do that again.

I bought a beer trap to try but the amount of slugs and snails out there I am going to need a brewery of beer traps to deal with them this year. Do they work with snails or just slugs? I have more snails than I have ever seen and nematodes don't seem to work on them. I agree with you Mark I can imagine dealing with the yucky drowned slug mess afterwards is probably really gross 🤢🤢. And it they must be dealt with responsibly as I have read that hedgehogs can get very ill eating beery slugs poor little things.

The new pellets work best of they are scattered well away from the plants. They contain a lot of bran which attracts the slugs but they do not kill the slug for a long time - so you have enticed the slug onto your bed, he gets fed up with dried food and moves on to the lovely green juicy stuff to quench his thirst! I have stopped using slug nematodes after I found out that they do not kill snails - so you still have to deal with them anyway. Plus the nematodes kill all slugs, even the friendly ones. (only 8 of the 40 UK varieties like to eat live vegetation)

Hopefully coffee shops don’t just on the gouge the gardener bandwagon and start charging us. I heard cinnamon and holly leaves once dry are lethal. Hope it works plants are being decimated, I even found 2 feasting on my dahlia babies 😢😢. Steve always said use less 👍👍. Have a fab week Mark, Ali 🌧️🌧️🇨🇦

I’m hoping at least one of the methods works 😋 Think I’ll give holly leaves a try as well. One of my neighbours has one that keeps growing over the fence and now I have something to do with the leaves the next time I give it a trim 👍🌱👍

Great tips Mark. I have bought some of those copper coated scoring pad rings to put around the stems of my pumpkins and courgettes when I plant them out this coming weekend. I’ll let you know if it works. Wish me luck. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

They never chew on the Lady's mantle either and as I have understand it its because the leaves are furry. So spiky leaves sounds like a good natural defense. - Do you have to keep the leaves fresh? Does it still work when they start to dry out? Looking forward to see the conclusion. Hmm..🤔 I maybe have to start my own experiments. Thank you for the input👍🌱

Have you considered a small pond, it'll attract frogs and hedgehogs which both love slugs.

I used brambles to protect my cabbages and it seems to be working. I didn't chop them up though. I just surrounded my cabbage bed and the cabbages themselves with a couple of layers of brambles.

I use slug collars until my plants are big enough not to be hurt by slugs. They really work and although you need to buy them initially you can use them again and again. I'm such a fan that I have 30 at home!
