For me, Oliver Twist was amazing for the character of Nancy. Most of Dickens women are blah, at least in the books of his that I read. But Nancy captured me completely. How I prayed that the book would not end like the film or the musical did. I recall that the book was very exciting. His other books left me cold. I realize that Dickens books purpose was often to educate or expose some wrong in his world. But oh what a chore it was for me to get through them for school assignments. If only they had assigned Oliver Twist I might have developed a love for Dickens. Well, Jane Eyre changed for me after I read Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. I always thought Rochester was a bit of a bully with a cruel streak in him. After reading Rhys's book I could not accept the portrayal of the mad wife in the book anymore.

Whether it be Buy or free to read or unlimited books. (I have a kindle unlimited subscription). Something not matching up. I just discovered your channel - subscribed and look forward to exploring your other videos. I've read quite a few of Margaret Oliphant's novels, which I find fascinating and also very relaxing to read. I do agree with your comments. I am getting a strong impression, as I read more of her works, that she did not plan her plots out in any great detail, but that she had a vision of a situation, some interesting characters, and maybe a major event: then she would just start in and see what happened. Some of the books have great leaps in time, when maybe she got an idea for a future development and didn't want to wait to start writing about it. And sometimes the stories end with an '... and I leave it up to the reader's imagination how they got on together'. I'm surprised that - with the obvious popularity of historical drama - we have not seen more adaptations of her books for film, TV or radio. One of my favourites is 'Neighbours on the Green' - a collection of related short(ish) stories. I wonder if that inspired E.F.Benson to write his first 'Lucia' book?

I wonder if Wives and Lovers is rather autobiographical. I just started North and South, my first Elizabeth Gaskell book, and it has an introduction with a short biography of Elizabeth Gaskell. I think it said her mother died young and that her father remarried. It might have even said that she had a step-sister. I can't remember exactly though. Enjoyed your ranking.

Enjoyable introduction to this author and series. One slight quip- I wouldn’t say that Barbara Pym’s novels are at all cynical. They display a certain skepticism about ossified ways of thinking and being but also a great affection and faith in everyday traditional ways(the middle brow, I guess)
