It really does feel like a "tragedy" written by a guy who reacted to a relationship failing by going full "all women are like that" and learning no real lessons. Not to mention the framing of the end. Mark is treated like he has some sort of moral high ground compared to Lisa, like Johnny's suicide was all her fault when it takes 2 to tango. Tommy definitely has some baggage with regards to relationships, or at least did at the time he made this.

The bit about the writing being sexist because lisa is unbelievable is not really that far-fetched for people with borderline personality disorder. I experienced it myself, where someone was in a happy relationship but would have sex with other people secretly. It's not normal but BPD isn't entirely abnormal.

There is no doubt that this movie is very, very flawed in really obvious, basic ways (the entire plot is just broken for example). There is also no doubt that overall it's great fun and has some truly iconic, memorable moments which elevate it far above many movies with far less obvious flaws. You just have to take the rough with the smooth, it's a great movie.
