It just shocks me when people of the RLM age group don't remember all the hysteria over Buzz Lightyear toys in 95, or the tickle me Elmo aisle wars that went on in the mid 90s. Like, shit was getting down to fists and violence. Jingle All The Way is funny to me because it was absolutely true for parents in the 90s, especially last minute shoppers. The commercial IS the story, and I don't think the movie is trying to say its a good thing. The dad, the mailman, and all of those parents are *supposed* to look like assholes.

The Arnold casting is what makes it funny and unique, for me at least. The obvious action hero as an everyman, the very cynical and consumerist approach to Christmas, even the bad Arnold disguise at the end, all those mismatches make the movie way funnier than if it was played straight. If anything, it should've leaned more into that

Hell, they think you have to graduate law school to be a judge in America. A bunch of states elect judges, and pretty much anyone except felons can run.

I mean it does have a certain level of charm to it but Mike's suggestion for tweaking it would have made for a better movie if it was trying to be more like a Home Alone or Gremlims. For me personally if they were deadset on Arnold, they should have doubled down on the more whimsical elements like the there being a jetpack. There should have been more whacky shit in general like that santa gang and bomb threat scene. Like things seem normal initially but it just sporadically reveals its more of a comic book world ala Gotham City, and he stole the suit from the real Turbo Man (instead of just an actor that has a working jetpack for reasons), with unfathomable shit happening around him or because of him, but the movie still acts like nothing weird is going and the actual story remains pretty much the same. Also Turbo Man being an animated character would have just been neat lol.

The parade scene was filmed on the New York Street set at Universal Studios, which is visible from the tour ride. I don't remember really seeing this as a kid. I love it as an adult because it's just so silly. It's like a novelty thing. The whole point is that it's devoid of realism like some kind of fever dream. An underground gang of Santas and a tiny santa getting punched 100 feet into a wall, the desperate mailman going from feigning friendliness to antagonist to actual supervillain, the moment when Arnie turns on the jetpack and you just have to accept that jetpacks are a thing in this world with children's cartoon logic. It's all wonderful.

It's also nice because it looks like Arnold was just having fun the whole movie. In a normal movie obviously someone else should be cast in his role, but Arnold's casting is perfectly in line with the entire tone of the movie. I think the scene where everyone starts laughing at him in the store perfectly captures the tone of the film overall. It's completely unrealistic for everyone to care so much about what toy is popular and to all laugh so hard at him for being oblivious to the situation. The realistic treatment of hyperbole and absurdity and caricaturing of reactions and emotions is the whole joke the movie is going for I think.

I guess but the fact that arnold is an action hero irl and his likeness is identical to that of the turbo man doll is a very key element to what makes this a satire. Seems like that flew over these guy’s heads due to just wanting to hate the film

This movie was made shortly after the White Power Ranger shortage. Its what the movie is referring to with Turboman. An action figure form a live action kids show. There was even a death over the White Power Ranger. Two mothers got into a fight over the last White Power Ranger in the store, and it didn't end well.

Re the post credits scene that seems like it was the movie's original ending. In the theater I watched it in, even the projectionist didn’t know about it as the curtains started closing as it began. They then hit reverse to for the remaining 10 seconds to play before closing them again.
