I woke up on the 4AM twilight morning of November 11, 2023 with my subconscious DJ spinning "rudy with a flashlight" (One of the most beautiful yet simple songs by Rainer). Then I got up to touch my guitar and make some tea. I looked up his born/died dates on the internet ,and was amazed to see his anniversary date was November 12. The world is a totally mysterious place -- I don't even pretend to explain away "COINCIDENCE". I just allow myself to feel the beauty surrounding it. Rainer was the earliest person in my life (professinoal musician-wise) to give me a note of recognition for my drumming. As a very young and isolated 19 year old, a mere appreciative encouraging nod really counted for a lot. Thanks Rainer, for having ears ! For having a heart, and being true to that heart.

I sang this song in elementary school in the 1970s-- I thought it was an old spiritual from the American South. I couldn't get it out of my head for the past week and I am glad to hear Leonard singing it.

Good to see I'm not the only one affected by this song. I remember my dad watching it. He would have been the same age as the characters (though not the actors). If only we could go back in time to visit.

This cover of this great song is like the sad obituary of working class power, we came out fighting in the 19th Century (In the West) and made great gains (21st century for our Developing World brothers and sisters) knocked back by Thatcher and Regan, soon to be totally defeated by AI and automation. But atleast we'll take them with us. Their production will be too efficient, but because there will be ultimate efficiency, no worker to claim money off the producer, and no workers to buy thier product, the system will collapse. That's the bittersweet funny irony in it all. By automating and taking our jobs away there'll be no one left who can afford to buy thier shit. And then they are as dead as we are😅

I discovered this song while watching Prue's funeral on Charmed. Absolutely loved it! Recently, my Mother passed away. Towards the end of the Service we played this very song; Bell, Book & Candle. And yes, my Mother's casket was placed in a white carriage with 2 White Horses, just like in the lyrics. The video of Mums being taken to the gravesite via horse & carriage with this beautiful & ethereal song playing in the background, made everything an amazing experience that I will always cherish. Blessed Be ❤ 🐎🐎

In "Back in the USSA" by Kim Newman and Eugene Byrne, there's a piece titled "Teddy Bear's Picnic", describing Bob and Terry's exploits in the army of His Majesty King Edward VIII during the Vietnam War fighting American-backed Communist guerrillas. It turns out Bob got conscripted in spite of his two flat feet after all.
