The Motocross Vault

The Motocross Vault

I created The Motocross Vault as a place for classic motocross enthusiast like myself to gather and celebrate the great history of the sport of motocross. I am currently a blogger and writer for PulpMX.com and have forty years of experience in and around the sport of Motocross. Over the course of my career as a racer and rider, I have owned over 50 different motorcycle and ATVs and have always had a huge passion for the sport.

Here at The Motocross Vault I plan to cover the history of the sport by looking back at the machines that have defined it. I am also going to cover important historical events and some of the classic publications have documented and enriched the sport I love over the last 50 years of American Motocross and Supercross. It is my hope that by keeping the history of the sport alive future generations will be able to appreciate the great and unique racing era I have been blessed enough to grow up in.

I hope you enjoy the ride.

Miss my 80 XR200 to this day. I had more fun on that bike than any other dirt bike I ever owned. The light weight and forgiving nature of the engine made it a dream out in the bush.

My dad had one of the xr250s and I learned to ride on it as a kid, before that my first 4 wheeler was a early model Blaster with a twist throttle conversion and it was pretty damn quick!

Won a District 6 Championship on a 1984 model. I ran the bike in 1985 as well and never had a DNF in 36 motos over that 2 year span. It was a great bike and it is still in my stable of bikes.

Kosaki have been green. Suzuki have been why don’t we make them all different colors instead of the colors there are now

I always thought the kx looked the coolest but my dad wouldn’t let me spend an extra 100 bucks for it. Had to settle for a brand new 85 cr80. What a dependable bike. Rode it two years never even removed the spark plug once. Always started first kick. Solid machine. Typical Honda. Paid 949.00 brand new. I remember the kx was exactly 1050.00. Lol

Hey Tony, Been watching your videos on the 85-88 era CRs recently as I'm doing a full resto-mod 86 CR500.. Trying to get the answer to this question.. Some dingleberry chucked the cartridge forks off this bike and bubba'd a set of 2003 YZ250 forks onto it. The modern XR650Ls have the 43mm Conventional Cartridge forks like the 1986-88 bikes had. Aside from valving, are they they exact same internals? Thanks

I had an 83 rm250 and that full floater rear end was fantastic for climbing really gnarly steep trails. I never raced it on a track just beat on it on trails. The cylinder sleeve must have been made of some soft steel. We rebuilt it almost every month. My neighbor who would rebuild it promised me it was not designed to run wide open for minutes at a time just corner to corner.😂

The word nuclear is pronounced ( new-cleer) it is not pro ounced (newk- yah-lur)....I dont know how that hillbilly pronunciation of nulear got started but there is a very large per e tage of our populous that believes that it is the correct one.. That to me is insane but yet its a true fact. Newk-yah-lur from nuclear... weird as shit man. Pure heard mentality stupidity.

16 sounds about right for '80. All of them were about that, it was just about delivery. I never rode a CR then (1980) but heard they looped easily, like the KX. I remember kids saying the KX was unraceable for that. Uncontrollable getting on the gas hard.

I own a 1982 XR500R which is totally not restored. I've just started it on the forth kick, got my helmet on and off we went. It's such a buzz to ride a machine which is 42 years old, and its a pleasure to be on top of. I'm 59 and I think I'll keep doing this until I can't start it! Today wasn't that day.

I gotta say, I did just a bit of engine work to the 88 CR250, stock pipe, good jetting, and that thing ripped. Many great MX starts. Soft on the bottom, but mid-range on up it was fast. I would run it against any other stock CR. I think it was the fasted 250 I ever had.

They bore plated cylinders also with a oversize piston and plating the cylinder again, but it is really a mute point if the bike is maintained/jetted well. I was nervous at first like the mags, with my 1988 CR250. But I sucked in a bunch of sand because I did not check if the air filter was oiled right after I bought the bike new,--and the plating was fine. In fact, all I did was clean up the intake track, put it back together and rode it for the summer. Put in a new piston and ring for the next 5 years, ($100.00/bore job?). It was and is rare that you get a failure that can ruin the cylinder if you do what you are suppose for maintenance and fuel. I wouldn't even mention it anymore. :)

I almost bought a 96 wr250 about a decade ago. Sold before I got to it. Currently have a 01 yz that I've been trying to make into a wr. It Has a wr400f transmission, a 13 ounce flywheel weight, 18" rear wheel, fmf gnarly pipe and turbine core muffler. Has tons of snap on the bottom to mid but feels lacking on the top. I also have a wr400f that I ride back to back sometimes. it's cool to see the differences between a 2 stroke and 4 stroke that have the exact same gearing.

5:56 I am not sure what is more nostalgic, the 1980 CR80 that kid is riding, or the riding gear he is wearing, complete with bell bottom jeans and work boots. :) I remember my dad telling me to wear boots, (riding in tennis shoes), and I ignored him. Then a beer truck driver (we had a little store), saw me riding near the store, and told me he raced dirt bikes a bit, and I should be wearing boots. Guess who I listened to? But hey, after the street bike he bought for my brother and I, (because the Honda CL100 was left over for 2 years and got it for $300.00, of which I bought all my own bikes after that.), I just thought he had lost all credibility about the subject. :)
