Back in ‘76, my old neighbor was a salesman at a Honda shop. Dude had a pair of these three wheeled machines that none of us kids had ever seen before. My 8 yr old mind was set.

I've seen an 87 sx250, it was in barely recognizable shape, but still had the Vin tag. And I am in Canada.

Being a motocross guy , fall 1984 , sold my cr 125 for a new 1985 ATC 200 x , big mistake , 6 months later sold it , bought a new cr 125 :)

I have an 84 200x great bike, its been in the back of the shed the last 5 years though

1st! Very cool vid! Loved the 200x! I owned two 83 and 84 and beat the heck out of them ( also a 86 250r). They were so much fun snow or dirt and could wheelie for days. The last gen was a nice step up, especially the kicker. Kicking the old gens dumped your boot in the water if stalled.

Sweet! I love 3-wheeler content! I need to order another ATC250R sticker from you.

I've got an 87, it is a true survivor, I love it. I started out on a 86 Quadsport 230, which was the perfect bike for me and I always hated Honda. I now see how incredibly better the Hondas were. Planning on heading to Silver Lake sand dunes soon, nothing better than a 3-wheeler in the sand.

I owned a 1986 ATC200X. I bought it off my brother-in-law after he didn't want to ride it anymore, and I thought it was a fun machine for trail riding. Out in my neck of the woods, the 1983, 1984, and 1985 Honda ATC200X was the machine that made three-wheeled ATVs popular. Before the 200X came out, I'd rarely see an ATV except on the occasional TV commercial. Once the 200X hit the Honda dealer showrooms, these machines started appearing in the local gravel banks and trails. I remember the US CPSC getting involved with ATV safety and the big stink that was made about it back in 1985 and 1986. Even TV "news" shows like CBS's 60 Minutes and ABC's 20/20 had segments on the issue, making a big deal about it. I remember there being talk of many ambulance-chasing lawyer lawsuits against the manufacturers about liability, or $$$ in other words. 🤑 Because of this issue and the popularity of the 4-wheeled ATV that hit the scene at this time, the 3-wheelers bit the dust after 1987. I was told any unsold 3-wheelers on the dealer showrooms were picked up and sent to Canada to be sold there. Don't know if that's true, though - just hearsay. Just as a side note since I'm thinking 3-wheelers, probably the most enjoyable 3-wheeled ATV I owned was my 1985 Yamaha YT125N Tri Moto. It was yellow and black, no suspension, fat 22x11x8 tires all around, recoil pull start, 5-speed with auto clutch, 123cc oil injected 2-stroke air-cooled engine, and bought brand-new in 1987 as a leftover for $999. I enjoyed it most riding in the woods behind the house blazing my own trails were there were no trails, and it was extremely well-suited for that with its light weight, tight turning radius, and super-torquey engine and low gearing. This thing would turn around the base of trees in a tight circle and torque up the steepest hills from a dead stop out in the middle of nowhere. I spent much of the spring and summer of 1987 riding in those woods for hours on end, not thinking about anything else. That's a sign of a good ride. 🙂

Yes, as soon as the three wheelers hit the TV news about safety, the 3-wheeler was banned. The injury rate of SX and MX is very high today, (because of the faster 4-stroke pushed on the industry by the EPA, with the FIM on a EPA leash.). If that hits the news,--what can happen?

@@TheMotocrossVault glad to have you back. Trikes are fun. I remember when the big red came out and we all thought the name was fitting. It's like a tinker toy, by today's standards. But it was a great piece of farm & fun equipment!

I always thought the manuals said 18hp lol

The gear is in the transmission are different the frames are both different I have an 86 and an 87

I still have mine from New in 1987 it's a 1986 200x. 1987 1988 big red was still made.

Brings back memories when I was 15 I asked for a 350X for my birthday, My parents went to pick one up at the dealer and the salesman told them it would be too much power for me so I ended up getting the 1986 200x.stupid salesman

The quad did not come out until the trikes were banned. The trikes were banned by a growing dictatorship government, that is almost full grown today. Reject the baby sitters, because they are bad baby sitters, and we are adults.

Opps, at 13:55, I sit corrected. But, they do not look like the performance models yet, so I never saw them riding with us. :) But,---to add to your argument. Those 4-wheelers existed by the manufactures choice, (free enterprise), and the 3-wheeler was ended by government force. That is a difference we should understand because it is a big difference, when baby sitter dictators tell us what to make and buy. it is none of their "business". :)

Yes we rode all over the desert and glamis as kids and young men ,I wish nadder would have kept his nose out of the desert rats life

When we have government attacking (or taking over like we se today), free enterprise,--it is called communism.

Looking at this now it’s hard to believe 3 wheelers were ever taken seriously. Now they look like something they would race in the special olympics. Don’t have the skill to ride an actual 2 wheel dirtbike, Honda has you covered.

Truth of the matter is 3 wheelers are harder to ride at a competitive level (for most). In my experience dirtbike guys crash the most when you put them on 3 wheels (quad guys never get going fast enough to crash 😂)

To race the three wheeler took a lot of skill ,I rode both motorcycle and three wheeler 250r ,and KTM 250 .it took just as much or more skill to ride that three wheeler and stay on top of it than a dirt bike !

I had the skill to ride a dirt bike well, but not a 3-wheeler. I have seen guys on MX tracks just shredding on them before they got banned. Maybe you never saw that?
