S&S Horseshoeing - Maverick Vet Service

S&S Horseshoeing - Maverick Vet Service

Hey! Thanks for stopping by our channel!

Here you'll find videos on trimming and shoeing horses, forging handmade horseshoes, therapeutic horseshoeing, tips and tricks for other farriers, and some veterinary cases.

My name is Sheldon Thomas. I am a Veterinarian and Certified Journeyman Farrier with the American Farrier's Association. I was born and raised in a small town in Southeastern Arizona, USA. I am currently working as a mixed animal veterinarian in Washington and keep busy horseshoeing on the side. Between that and spending time with my family, my time is pretty well spoken for. My wife and I have been married for seven years and we have three little boys.

Ride like the wind and God bless!

Do whatever you want ... Mix it up in categories on videos with labels maybe? Love the shoeing b/c it's such a specialty. Vet who shoes. Quite a niche market.

Fascinated with your work, the multi specificity of your education and passion. Sweet to hear you tell him that he's a good boy/nice horse. Hope he does well with your repair. Tough problem. He's well on his way. Look forward to more videos.

Best way is to avoid laminitis in the first place. Easier said than done in so many instances, but it's possible. Hard work and people will tell you how 'mean' you are when the littlies (especially) are on very poor grazing, or wearing grazing muzzles, or yarded with access only to 'suitable' fedstuffs. Ignore them, and keep your metabolic-syndrome-vulnerable equines happy, healthy and laminitis free. Of course if the damage is already done, you can only do the best you can ...

QUESTION: the black areas on the side of the frog, is this due to the horses coloration or is this old and dead tissue from thrush? I am not there to smell it lol. Also, after trimming the frog, sometimes near the central sulcus, it appears that the freshly trimmed frog, has some black mixed in. Coloration again or an area we should watch?

I hope you will answer this. I have a 17 year old severely foundered with rotated coffin bone. Well I can’t attach a picture. The toe is so rolled that it looks like it is 4” from the hair line. It looks way too short. Is there a point where this is necessary? Farriers are far and few between around here

Nooooooo this isn’t correct. Horse needs the pillar of support leave the toe wall to support the new growth and take heels down to hard sole plane. Tie shopping causes the stiletto appearance to the pedal bone. Check out Lindsey Serchell Hoof Marvelous to see all the laminitis rehabs.
