i got knee surgery in feb of 2023 and i was in a wheelchair and on cruches for about 3 weeks while doing slight PT and then moving up to lots of PT (sadly) also the first night of sleep is the worst so i recommend taking enough melatonin and painkillers and use a ice machine, the hospital i went to gave me one and its amazinggg but if you didnt get one put ice in a bag and wrap it and dont let it touch your bare skin. also dont be concerned if your knee feels funky and weird when you touch it, thats the medicine basically still in your knee and it can be there for many years. my dad had surgery 2 on his knees and still has the feeling in parts of his knee and so do i! take enough painkillers every single day cause the day you get home a couple hours later the meds will ware off and it hurts soo so so so bad. also i know it can be hard doing your daily tasks at first but trust me IT GETS SO MUCH EASIERRRR!! also PLEASEEEEEEEEEE start doing easy PT exercieses like extending your knee as much as possible (dont push yourself so hard) because the faster you get all that worked out the faster your PT experience goes by. that was my mistake not wanting to do PT early before i started actually going because i had to, but my dad wanted me to start doing it as soon as possible since he knows what hes taking about lol andd thats why i spent more time doing PT and do your exercieses at home (another mistake i made lol) also for showers dont get the wrapping wet tha the doctors had wrapped on your knee, because it will still have to stay on your knee for many more days so it will be uncomfortable. rip two holes in the top and bottom of a big plastic bag or CLEAN trash bag and tape it with KT tape or any other tapes. also goodluck if you are getting surgery and i hope this helps!

Im one week post operation from my ACL reconstructive surgery using my hamstring as replacement and some possible meniscus repair. (I was not given a brace after surgery, I was told to do full weight bearing with the crutches) Today is the Friday one week after the last Friday when surgery was had. I’m already out of crutches, and not using my cane much either. (I got the cane when I initially injured my knee tearing my ACL fully 9 yrs ago, yes I had a 9 year wait… fell to the bottom of the surgery list a-few times, that’s Canadian healthcare sometimes…) I don’t know what it is I’m doing differently other than a-lot of prayer 🙏🏼 yes I said prayer. Trying to avoid the pain meds and making sure I keep it lifted when resting and ice it often but I’ve noticed I’m more healed than most would be at this point. I can walk with only a slight limp, get a good full leg extend and have been working on the bending slowly and doing my physiotherapy at home each day. I swear I discouraged myself way more due to watching others stories of healing and mental handling of the situation. In comparison to how I feel though…. I feel pretty dang good. It’s a-little awkward adjusting a-few things but not entirely as much as I initially thought… I expected to be using crutches for weeks. Then the cane for a-few more weeks. Only to be shown physical improvement by leaps and bounds each day. I already had a pretty decent pain tolerance before going for surgery but to be witnessing and being going through this myself now I know I 100% overwhelmed myself with thoughts that filled me with anxiety…. The mental stigma messes with you most.. but again for myself prayer has been a constant friend. As well as resting it high and putting some ice on it. Anyone doing research for their own preparation for such procedures just know everyone heals differently. Some are slow and some are a-little quicker like myself it seems. But again I’m shocked how well I’ve been feeling. *I truly hope anyone going through any similar procedures doesn’t let their mental discouragement get the better of them. That will be your biggest battle. I truly only think I handle it mentally so well cause I was walking on it being bad for so long…*
