Love watching your videos. Any old gaff boat gets my attention, and as a retired journalist. 'Whats the story behind you youngsters aquiring a beautiful big boat like that? Shes fab, keep them coming.
Good video. Hydrovanes are an important safety, autopilot option. There are other wind vane steering rigs. The one's that operate the boat's rudder, I think miss a critical factor -- what happens if your rudder is broken? The Hydrovane is a completely independent rudder. (And sure if you're using it hitting something could damage both rudders.) I've got a Hydrovane on my boat, never used it. Only started fiddling with it the other day. My boat is set up for ocean crossings, she's been to New Zealand (from California). Blade rudder, up graded, but still a blade rudder. With the Hydrovane, my main Autopilot, a stick auto pilot, I've got two independent rudders, two tiller options, wind steering. I'm ready to go anywhere including the dreaded Orcas off Spain. The biggest expense might not be the unit, it might be the installation. I have a sugarscoop aft so the Hydrovane is on some strong tubing more than a meter long. You do want to get the best possible installation. (I'd like to see some boats with Hydrovanes, aft dinghy davits, and maybe sugarscoops. ) I figured out one trick. The adjusting line. I don't have it rigged with the continuous loop. I always have a lot of paracord onboard so I tried that. Without the pulley(block) on the bungee it kept skipping out of the grove on the roller. I just put a twist in that loop so there's an 'X' after the two little guide holes. Problem solved. This is probably a good trick to use in an emergency use if you're not fully set up. You need a lot of paracord. After making my adjustment I just wrap it around a fishing rod holder in a loose knot. I'd suggest to use the H'Vane for an emergency have 50' (15m) of paracord in the locker with the tillers, or hanging off the vane. Mark the mid point on the line with a contrasting color so when you put it on you have equal amounts of line on each side. Ideally I guess would be some kind of quick connection for the continuous loop. My Hydrovane is 20 years old, cotton lines everywhere, tightening the fabric on the vanes, retaining lines. Going to replace those. Easy. The two main pins were a bit encrusted. A little contact cleaner, plastic kitchen scrubber (on the pins) a little in and out.
Why isn't the Peak Halyard on the same ratio as the Throat Halyard so they both rise at the same _rate?_
Make use of a triatic stay .
You're a natural born teacher. Well done mate!
Nice video 👍
How many old sailers or merchant marines are cringing everything time he says rope, lol. I remember my first trip as an OS I said the rope word and got my ass ate out, lol. It's a line boy. There are no ropes on this ship. Lol.
Good lord what a great looking ship! I would totally sell everything and live on such a wooden vessel.
The original wooden interior is beautiful.. it's a shame that it's been hacked together with modern materials and someone who has enough skills to get it done but not enough to make it look decent
Could be a really great boat if Matthew can get rid of his cobbling/Red Green building skills and become a craftsman. Then you could really have something nice rather than hacked off bulkheads and unfinished everything..
You guys still around?
We are :) just having to sort a few bits with Morna and haven't filmed for a while

Goodness me! I've just discovered your channel, and I can't believe the beauty of your boat, the beauty of your dog and the awesomeness of the two of you! Hello form South Africa!
Love the furry supervisor 😍
8:40 Horrible ....remove it . Save OCEAN CULTURE (love)
Take your bra off next time.... That'll get you loads more male paying members.... !!
Traditional gear is such a joy, so easy to see understand and see how it works.
Awesome 👏🤩
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing your beautiful boat!
Wish you guys still made videos, top stuff. Hope you are out sailing this magnificent boat and loving every minute of it ❤
Lazy jacks?
Great video I’ve just bought an older yacht with Maxwell 2200 windlass and several winches (non tailing unfortunately) and this was easy to follow Cheers from Thailand
Wow. Been a while. I’ve missed y’all’s travels.
Bonnie Scotland!
Where are you come back
Y'all need to get a drone. I Keep waiting t see a video of your boat under sail from the air or shore.
God I am glad you guys are back
Miss your videos .. Hope to see some new vids soon .. I now have a 26ft sailboat and looking forward to sailing the Florida Keys for a few weeks
Bonnie Albán!
Love your boat and your energy for the old lady of the sea Found your youtube cannel while sorting how to setup a short gaff rig on my ex lifeboat converting to motor sailor 'MS Matakana' I'll be following your story between the upgrades on Matakana. Cheers.
You’d never know she was a northern lass, far too much cool, awesome, guys etc. I’m sure there is a none american inside. Stop it.
This is great ... I have recently got involved with Brixham Trawler Provident, your rig is very similar, so very useful to hone up on sail management of gaff rigs, which I'm new to. Cheers, Gavin
Beautiful episode filming, thanks for sharing Greetings from Hawaii islands I like it your video , truly awesome.
I have missed you all so often..if you come to Monterey county in Cali..let me tour your around..my best 2 you🎈
Very cool. Is there a best sequence for your sails to set and douse? I.e. first mizzen, then staysail, then perhaps main? And dousing the main before the mizzen, or is the no advantage either way?
This is an excellent video. I found other videos online but none of them explained it as well as yours.

Very good video . Wish there were more second hand gaffers available, they really get to you in a way that a bermudan riggerd boat doesn`t .
I have rarely seen hat, better suited to the face it frames, or the personality that it chimes with, than the one Paige wears in this video.
Very Nice video, fantastic boat. My envy circuits are on overload. I learned to sail on gaff rigged cutter about a million years ago and I really miss that elegant simplicity.
A man shows off his boat while his wife accompanies him haha At least that's what this feels like a little bit. Grand tour in detail. Big, big boat. Very nice.
Beautiful gaffer! Wish we had more of these in Canada!
Very nice boat. @3:12 I believe those are the shrouds. The stays are fore and aft. But it's a beautiful boat!
There are no "ropes" on a boat save one. They are all "lines" except "the bell rope." Love that old boat. Many thanks for the video.
Very in depth and very informative 👌 thanks for explaining
Hello again. If you find windward work a problem due to the mizzen mast bending aft when you sheet in hard then a solution is to rig a running forestay, just don't forget to unhook it when tacking! I rigged one on the Danish ketch Anna Moller and the skipper told me it made the world of difference, she has no engine so relies even more so on her sailing ability. Talking of wiring shackles, I didn't comment on it previously, watch that capsized shackle on the throat block! The pin needs to go through the eyebolt.
awesome job explaining everything... 2 thumbs up...
Good evening Matt , Morna looks stunning now such a difference from when we met you lifted out in Dartmouth at Darthaven Marina , you should be very proud mate 👌
I think I'll do it myself this week. I just got instructions from woodglut and I'm ready for it: D
Missed the cool green Wagon on the left of the white home at 5:46 ….every video of the Crinan Canal on KZread misses it and only films this White House for some reason.
That scenery is spectacular.
