  I have been using Hanzi Hero to learn Hanzi on my Samsung phone when suddenly, most of the vowels no longer offer the third tone when long pressed. I didn't update anything or change any settings before this happened. Does anyone know why this is happening? It doesn't matter which keyboard app I use or what languages I activate. When I switch to a pinyin keyboard or a Chinese keyboard, the vowels with the third tone are there, but they output Hanzi, which means that I can't give the correct pinyin answer on Hanzi Hero. It's been days and I haven't been able to figure this out. I see the occasional forum post about this issue, but no one has answered it with a fix. I'm losing my mind here...

  very useful. 🙂 how about when i would do something very small for someone? like if I give them a bottle of tea and they thank me. how would i say "you're welcome" in that situation?

  Yes Chinese is sooOOooo much betters than romance language at conveying ideas. English: "That man was acting crazy and brandished a gun arguing with a the cashier over a coupon". Chinese-Direct-To-English: "Food discount ticket civil dispute wild monkey rage man hand cannon peep-show to item money exchange worker." See it is so much more simple and direct. 😂😂😂😂

  mandarin is very simple and almost perfectly regular. we'd all speak it as a second language, if they hadn't stuck with characters. even so, smart phones and robot translation make getting around in china quite easy. but it is a tonal language, and to speak it well one should start young or have a musical tongue.

  Why wouldn’t you just translate: “the gentle he gets down on one knee” to: “the gentle man gets down on one knee”..? You lose the pronoun, yes, but you retain the meaning entirely vs translating as “he gently”.

  Chinese is RIDICULOUS to me the amount of individual strokes required for simple words: Cod = 24 strokes vs 4 english Carp = 20 strokes vs 7 english Spider = 29 strokes vs 11 english Lizard = 32 strokes vs 13 english

  Spoken Chinese always just sounds to me like someone reacting to either a bad taste/smell or the sounds you make watching sports when your team fucks up or the refs blow a call 😂

  Sorry, but any language without an alphabet and phonics instead relying on memorizing thousands or tens of thousands of uniques characters and their pronunciation is garbage.

  Hanzi is by far my favourite writing system, Mandarin isn't my target language currently, but I'm learning Japanese, which uses Kanji which is very similar

  I agree that a difficult language is bad, when I was younger I thought I had social anxiety but when I started learning English I found out that English is easy to use and my native language was simply hard to use and that was the reason for difficult social situations. Also I notice that people who speak that language are less educated because it's difficult to take scientific or complex concepts (that exist in English) and explain them in that language (they don't exist in that language)

  五笔 is actually super efficient. It can be much much much faster and accurate than pinyin if used properly.

  radiator (radiate+or) Lit. also “disperse heat device” since “to radiate” is to disperse heat. As for “-or”, see refrigerator, terminator, etc as examples for the “device” interpretation. Though “dictator” and “traitor” and “negotiator” seems to imply a more general transliteration as “thing that disperses heat” Suck it Mandarin 🍊

  I want to learn Chinese by myself. I use Kaiti (楷体) 16 pt when typing in Microsoft Word because it looks clear for me. I wonder what font size native Chinese speakers use when they type in Microsoft Word?

  My opinion is that it’s not thaaat important. It’s like learning how to type: you want to learn with the “proper” technique so you don’t pick up bad habits, but once you’re comfortable you can find your own style.

  I am a Chinese character user. Chinese characters seem to have one more dimension than pinyin characters. They are drawn based on what you see and then optimized into symbols, such as "人" = human being, "大" = "big" Opening his hands tells his companions that he has just seen something huge. Of course, it is not just a simple meaning, there are also many words where half of the text is used to indicate the pronunciation. "半", "伴" and "绊" all have the same pronunciation, similar to "bank" without the "k". 伴 = half, companion = person + half, meaning partner, 绊 = silk thread + fall in mid-air = trip, 拌 = hand + half water, half flour = stirring, another difficulty is that Chinese has tones, similar to English "come on", different intonations have many meanings。When "人" is used as part of the character, it will be written as "亻", which means that the character is likely to be related to human beings, such as: 从 = follow, 众 = a group of people, 你 = you, 他 = him, 囚 = a person. In prison, yes, Chinese characters are so logical

  Great video. One question: am I right in assuming that characters of ALL categories are made up of pictographs and/ or ideographs, but that the pictographs and ideographs that a character is made up of either have their original function or are used to indicate a reading? Which would mean that in order to assimilate the visual aspect of characters, you´d "only" have to learn all the pictographs and ideographs.

  I see two assumptions here. 1. You assume that there exists a significant difference in the absolute difficulty between human languages. There is no way to actually quantity it and no proof that it really affects people's lifes that much. 2. The assumption that numbers and basic computations have a major role in understanding math. Mathematics is about abstract ideas, logical thinking and problem solving and language doesn't affect that in any meaningful way.

  1. I don´t think you need to know the etymological origin of a word to know what it depicts, even though the connections in Chinese are helpful. 2. If you do want to know the etymology of a word (say e.g. a latin word), you can look them up in a dictionary. One could argue that since the English language borrows word stems/ morphemes from so many languages, native English speakers have a broader perspective on language and also on abstract ideas. I really don´t see how being a language with a lot of "ingredients" would hinder you that much from learning.

  Word origins also remain the same in Greek. All of the words in our vocabulary(except slang) trace back to ancient Greek, which is where you will find the meaning of these words too! I always thought of Chinese as an ancient language that is still in use, because of the way words are constructed.

  Since I’m a beginner, I write everything on Pinyin. 🤭 I use the Spanish keyboard so at least for “á” and “à” I don’t need to switch. I’m still searching for an easier way to type the other tones… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  550 "core simplification" and not including radicals. It ended up being over 2000 total characters. Anything was consistently simplified for many characters count as one core simplification. i.e. If A -> B and 3 characters have A component, they would all get B component swapped in and that's one simplification.

  The person who told you that it is related to the quality of education should be a Chinese. Although education is indeed expensive, ordinary Chinese people are not aware of this. Because of the huge investment from the government, China’s compulsory education has a high penetration rate, and China’s universities Education also costs very little because of government subsidies, and annual tuition at the best universities in China is less than $1,000. And if you really come from a very low-income family, you only need to bring your admission letter to the school to register. You don't need to go anywhere else. Everything will be done at the university's secretariat. The cost is partly subsidized by a special fund and partly by a loan provided to you by the government, which is interest-free and repayments continue many many years after you graduate. In some poor areas of China, schools have slogans like this: You only need to pass the college entrance examination, and the government will do the rest. No one can stop you from going to college.

  I just started using Du Chinese and noticed there is an option to adjust the pinyin and character sizes. With the right settings this can solve any spacing issues.

  This is so cool! I remember reading the introduction to one of the many translations of the Tao Te Ching, I've seen the text in Chinese, about how the style and meaning of the language is also able to communicate the theme of balance in the Tao that English translations fail to achieve. It's one of the reasons I want to learn Mandarin, to be able to read the Tao through it's undiluted meaning.

  😂In English reading and listening are quite close. (In Spanish or Russian those aspects are almost same, i.e. what you see is what you hear)... In Chinese, however, reading has nothing to do with listening 😂 女 + 子 ≠ 好
