Dr. Becky

Dr. Becky

Your friendly neighbourhood astrophysicist. I'm Dr Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford. I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me!

I have also written a few books. My latest, "A Brief History of Black Holes", is available in hardback, e-book and audio (which I narrated myself!)

My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

Totally ignores the fact that plants are extremely reliant on bacteria, fungi, and sometimes even bugs… this is the real reason why many plants couldn’t be grown in Martian soil. The human waste may have been the answer, but that was completely looked over.

Does the microwave background evidence show that the original theory of the universe is wrong. This would throw out the big bang, the data seems to contradicted the model. So why fix something? Just start over.

Dr Becky....I love your content, more than most, but you really need to stop promoting Better Help. They're guilty of violating HIPPA and using patients private into to sell for marketing purposes. People with mental issues having ads targeted because of those issues is 100% wrong. This is a truly despicable and egregious act, Better Help is an amoral business, and it's a mark against any youtuber that continues to promote them.

I love how the lab in northern Canada is called the Arthur Clarke greenhouse, it shows us that before actually doing something, we have to imagine\dream of it first. (although, for me it would made more sense to be named after Kim Stanley Robinson)

Hello there, Dr Becky. Ive watched many of your videos and I must say you are the best astrophysicist KZreadr I know. The detail, the information and the way you turn complex concepts, easier to understand, is absolutely amazing! I wanted to ask you if you could make a video on how we heard the first sound after the big bang and how it was decoded for humans to hear. It sounds like a pretty interesting topic and id love to hear your input on it. Hoping you'll consider my request. Thank you. Also, i just received your book 'the brief history of Black holes' and its really beautiful and looks so interesting. Excited to read! And happiest birthday! Wishing you an amazing life full of new discoveries and successes ahead!

That's why all of astrophysics is wrong, we are the center of the observable universe in many ways (not to say the infinite beyond). Earth has bit a high point under scientific study of 4 trillion degrees, hotter than a fraction of a second after the preposed big bang, and hotter than anything we've seen in nature. (if BB was real, earth would have caused it) Furthermore a point on earth was cooled to a staggering fraction of a degree above absolute zero - the coldest anywhere can get, thus we are also the center of the observed thermal universe. furthermore all the big bang really is, is the source of everything we can see, which came from a star some 13B year ago - no doubt that star was surrounded by a universe even then, but has been expanding ever since, the observable universe is a black hole and the big bang it's event horizon... don't worry folks, it'll take eternity for us to fall in, the sky ever reddening. ... and the axis of evil only because all measurements originated from earth and don't take into account the toroidal EM field, nor the resolution of a few pixels across the entire sky. also, considering how little fluctuation there is in the CMB it astounds me that people still believe in entropy. you atheists, willing to consider everything but God. You're looking at a mirror, which is why all you'll ever see is doubt.

Wait wait... we are special* and we are at the centre of the universe☆!!! *special in this case being we are potentially early universally speaking. If Grabby alien theory is correct we will know in the next 50 million years to 250 million years. ☆We are at the center of our known detectable universe with our "bubble" of known observed space growing year after year.

Shouldn't science want to just know the TRUTH? The bottom line is that scientists just don't want to believe in anything that might point to GOD. I've seen follow up videos independent of this Channel that take it like a challenge. But both sides ultimately bring it down to faith. And you know that original video that was all about using the Axis of Evil and the Fine Tuning of the universe to say that GOD is real? Well, I saw Max Tegmarck indicate "in context" that "Some people don't like it and call it a crisis, I call it a multiverse". So, without proof, he is willing to believe in a multiverse that cannot be proven, rather than discussing the possibility that GOD created the universe. You know? He could have discussed it with intelligence rather than turning it into sides. What does it mean when scientists and physicists would speak with sincerity and consider that we may live in a simulation rather than considering that one of the oldest books in existence has been shown to prophesy the future accurately? Why does it have to be a battle? Why can it not be an open and honest discussion? I saw personally that Neil Degrasse Tyson would make fun of the Bible because it says in Revelation that the stars would fall to the earth at the end time. He ridiculed the Bible, not knowing that GOD was Speaking of angels falling to earth at the end time during the consummation of the flesh part of this age. If scientists and physicists would treat those who believe in GOD with respect and caring, then when they really do have a Crisis in Cosmology, the believers in GOD may rush to their side and say, you just need more data and we will be happy as you learn and prove more and more how the universe functions. But instead, they turn it into a battle to where the religious want to fight them back as they try to stamp each other out. It should not be that way. The entire Bible can be taught in two commandments from GOD. They should at least believe in, and live the second one and consider the possibility of the first one. (Matthew 22:34) But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. (Matthew 22:35) Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, (Matthew 22:36) Master, which is the great commandment in the law? (Matthew 22:37) Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (Matthew 22:38) This is the first and great commandment. (Matthew 22:39) And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (Matthew 22:40) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. But as I think about it, I'm completely unfair to the scientists and physicists, for the Bible says straight out that they cannot see. (Romans 11:7) What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded (Romans 11:8) (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day. And, as it says in Scripture: (John 14:6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 6:44) No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. AND if anyone wants to TRULY know about GOD, just think about this verse: (Jeremiah 29:13) And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Great show I used to contemplate the idea that the Universe had a couple of bounces against itself so it's like two layers that's why that's a question of why they're so little antimatter because there have been a couple of fast bounces off two layers of the universe with a 1st pop, I can only make an analogous to a solar storm leaving the sun's surface and blowing all of the material out of the way of a second blast leaving shortly thereafter making it travel faster than the first blast and possibly bouncing off of each other slowing one back down and then speeding the other back up but they're just so many different ideas that is almost impossible to contemplate finding the truth lol, thank you for the great show and your brain!

I'm going to bother you one more time Dr Becky I'm hoping you read the comments sometimes and consider people who aren't quite as intelligent as yourself I have this gnawing irritation with Center of mass or gravity. Everything is always moving and Co orbiting and there's weird things that happen to space because of gravitational lensing and that can be caused by a lot of things and I don't understand why the rotational factor of a galaxy matters so much and is thought to be too fast when you can't calculate for every bit of mass and its velocity paired star if it has one or a solar system bodies their release of movement to one another even at Great distances it's obvious that Galactic clusters have their own bearing sensors they must because they don't not orbit each other they don't just sit there everything is tumbling around all over the place yet it's still cohesive and I just don't have the comprehension I suppose to understand how I can't simply be a glaring yet so obvious mathematical situation that anyone that knows maths should see it yet you're so in the box so to speak and don't think out of the box that you can't see a different see what's happening it makes no sense to me that something that doesn't have any way of knowing to exist other than looking at actual matter and saying that it doesn't interact with matter then how is the Galaxy rotating too fast I don't see how the gravitational effects between objects in space could therefore have such effects upon them by invisible undetectable mysterious dark matter. I would be more apt to believe there are five main universes that string theory exists and they're all attached to one another through gravity which is a stretched brain and that would explain it just as well I'm not totally discounting it I just don't see how it's any different from saying there's God, lol, please don't be offended. I'm probably undereducated and likely I'm missing the capacity to find correlation and understand why there is such a serious problem here seemingly so. Thank you if you tried to read my ramblings I'm sorry if it was annoying and I'm sorry about my punctuation and such I love your show and I admire you so very much❤

You have never heard of the following premise ( which Means that you will automatically dismiss it) but the inference of the universe's Age, shaped and orientation From the CMB is inherently Flawed because the current Assumption that the release Of energy following the holographic phase was 100 percent efficient is a patently false and unproven assumption. There is another Energy relic from the early universe sitting under everyone's noses, which is also Mistakenly assumed to be eternally existing, known as Zero point energy, with a currently esitmated Magnitude Of mass/energy in the neighborhood of 10 to the 60 to 10 to the 92 grams per meter....indicating that the universe has an incredible degree of curvature, (which no one had cared to study), which Means that the time elapsed to Distance ratio AKA the hubble Constant is also very skewed Because a flat a highly curved Universe can actually occupy much smaller diameter than a Flat universe. The Dark in Dark Matter referrers to the fact that it is invisible. More than that it has eluded detection in all of the very clever experiments designed to find it. The number of Standard Model candidates remaining is small. Maybe Dark Matter is neutrinos or axions or tiny black holes. Perhaps someone can breath life into supersymmetry again. But maybe we are barking up the wrong tree. That is why I have some objection to the ‘Matter’ in Dark Matter. Maybe calling it matter is causing experimenters to error. All we really know is that something is affecting the mass of the universe. It may not be matter at all.

What is the proof that the Big Bang is the expansion of space? The expansion of our universe IN space may not be the same as the expansion OF space.
