👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

    If you're having issues with the sound on this video with your speaker set up, turn off your bass speaker. It sounds fine on a laptop or phone. In the meantime, through trial & error I'll try to figure out if its my new shotgun mic, the not yet fully furnished office/studio space with more echo than I'd like, or something in the edit that caused the issue for those of you with more sophisticated audio set ups.

    @@DrewNorthup No, listening to this on some normal desktop speakers, no extra bass speakers or anything expensive. Still sounds boomy compared to my tiny laptop or phone speakers. A lot of microphones are designed to pickup as many frequencies as possible to give audio engineers control of what they want people to hear. An EQ is not a difficult thing to do and is generally expected when using this type of equipment. IMovie has a decent little EQ interface that is simple to use. A quick Google can give you some tips about different voices and how to get clarity from boomy sounding recordings. Not enough KZreadrs do this to be honest and it makes some people difficult to listen to. TLDR: Mics are meant to be EQ'd depending on what you're recording. More creators should take a moment to set an EQ up for their voice.

I never thought I'd be the get off my lawn type person, but the world has changed so much with the amount of information available in the blink of an eye. • @hellegennes

    @hellegennes

    27 күн бұрын

    Not really, because the costs are associated with having a team behind the project (personnel, cost of operating hardware, etc). The telescope itself doesn't cost anything to remain in place. ESA can't and won't fund a team inside NASA and the US government will not give up control of one of their own satellites to ESA. Not that it's easy to build the infrastructure needed for that from scratch in Europe; or cheap.

    “Can’t and won’t fund a team inside NASA…” Why not? Is there a law preventing it, or just an ego thing ? If the telescope has value to worldwide science, keeping it running with outside (worldwide) money seems a logical and reasonable solution.

  • @hellegennes

    @hellegennes

    26 күн бұрын

    @@Falcon1082a There are many reasons. First of all, they have no authority outside Europe, that would be entirely up to the US to decide. Secondly, it's a political thing. No country would allow another country to fund their own operations, not only for reasons of pride, prestige and ego but also for reasons of sovereignty. NASA is a US agency; the US government cannot allow other countries to fund their own agency and actively manage it. Besides, what country or organization would choose to fund a project where they would have 0 say and no control whatsoever? How could ESA justify spending money for operations of an agency of another country? How could European politicians ask from their citizens to use their taxes to fund NASA? It's an entirely different thing if we are talking about a joint project. JWST for example is a joint NASA/ESA/CSA project; it was funded by all three agencies and is operated by all three of them. That's a partnership and every agency has the infrastructure to support the operations of the project. Chandra is entirely a NASA project. Interestingly enough, NASA, ESA and JAXA had a planned replacement for Chandra but it was cancelled, again because of NASA's budgetary constraints. It would be especially weird for ESA to suddenly agree to fund Chandra after that. ESA went their separate way and planned a downsized version of that proposed observatory (Athena). Problem is, that won't be launched for another decade or so.

    As always... love your main content! I look forward to them very week and Month. Appreciate all the work that goes into them.... but like a dog that plays with wrong toy, or a child that finds a regular household item more fun than the toy chest...... the blooper.... "That was the BBC calling, asking for an interview... I told them no!" Was the most fun!!!! Thank you Dr. B for all you do and teach us about!!!!

    Thanks for the detailed description of the upcoming nova! I knew it was coming, but not how bright it would be, or exactly where and when. For someone who lived near enough to the path of totality to make a trip to see it, having this other maybe-once-in-a-lifetime event happen so close in time to the total eclipse makes the nova even more attractive, at least to me. Also, thanks for these monthly videos on the night sky. I think I've commented on this before, but as an astronomy educator myself, but not a professional scientist, I really appreciate the way you discuss both what we can see in the next few weeks, and the science behind it. So many folks do one or the other, and you doing both is really helpful in bringing astronomy to life. It's obvious that you both regularly look at the night sky with your actual eyes, as well as think deeply about what it all means. And the obvious joy you feel about the amazing things we can all see is infectious. It helps that you are especially good at explaining so many complex things in simple ways, with excellent graphics as well.

    Hi, amazing video as always. At ~12:20 you say we only know of 10 recurrent nova ever. I believe that would only be true for the Milky Way. My undergraduate advisor studied nova and my senior thesis was on a recurrent nova in M31 known as 2008-12a with a recurrence time of 1 year. That is the shortest recurrence time we have ever witnessed!!

    T CrB is the kind of thing that makes me want to take a Starlink type approach to space telescopes. Put up 10's or maybe 100's of 0.5-1.0m platforms so that we could pick one and just have it watch T CrB from now until it goes boom. That would allow getting high temporal resolution data of the interval leading up to the big show and also get very quick notification when something happens so anyone else who wants to point something more capable at it can.

    Yeah, "Let's point SpaceTel 907 at T CrB and wait for it to go boom." Oh, that would be awesome. Any scientists reading here with Elon Musk-sized budgets? There's an idea here for you! EDIT: Wait. What about cub-sats? I wonder if those could be used in large groups? they'd have tiny mirrors/antennae, but maybe they could collect *some* useful data.
