👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

    A question just occurred to me...if you have two black holes with accretion disks and they start to merge...orbit each other, what happens to those accretion disks? I would imagine a very chaotic environment. My curiosity comes from considering what would happen if you have relativistic collisions on a massive scale...would (could) that happen in this kind of merger?

  • @ps.2

    @ps.2

    3 ай бұрын

    Good question! Accretion discs already throw out a great deal of high-energy radiation from the collisions that are happening to the matter already in the disc. (That's what the EHT's images of the two supermassive black holes really are: radiation from tidal friction in the accretion discs.) So, two colliding accretion discs would spit out more of the same. Some even higher-energy radiation for awhile, I guess, before the friction more or less evenly distributes the total angular momentum. And in the process, some of each accretion disc would be swallowed into the other black hole's event horizon. What percentage, I cannot begin to calculate.
