This is why the armed forces of any nation cannot be seen simply as an up-armoured extension of the state policing agencies. They are not equipped to handle the nuance and typically lack the levels of discernment and judiousness required for policing.

The revolvers and rifles are small arms NOT HEAVY WEAPONS. The IRA were much more heavily armed than the RUC, the IRA had RPGs, DSHKs, high calibre weapons like the Barrett .50 cal, M60 Machine guns; oh and least not forget the IRA were planting massive bombs across NI and England, killing many women and children.
