EarthSky

A clear voice for science. Updates on your cosmos and world.

EarthSky began in 1991, as a syndicated radio series on astronomy, Earth and the night sky, distributed through National Public Radio and elsewhere around the globe. Since 1994, the tiny but awesome EarthSky team has been having a blast online at EarthSky.org ... and since May 2023 we've had our sights on KZread/@EarthSky.

We love your photos at our community photo page. And we welcome your news tips! Please let us know what you like here on KZread, and what you'd like to see. Hope you enjoy the channel!

    We saw giant water lilies on the Amazon when we were photographing Dolphins. I think my wife liked the lilies more than the Dolphins. They were huge and had several different colour flower.

    Wait, I i just watched another video that reported on this paper, and it said it was a total non-detection. In other words, they found zero H3+. It places some constraints on dark matter, but no evidence that it exists. This suggests the opposite. 🤔

    The good..NASA is being more cautious and making decisions on engineering information, not public pressure, The Bad.... it's almost taken Starliner as long as it did Apollo to get from Mercury to the moon, to successfully dock in earth orbit, The Ugly...NASA determines it cannot stand for a rescue mission if it winds up necessary and bows to publ pressure and Butch and Sunni are put in danger. I share the optimism that Starliner will bring them home safely ❤

    Let's not mistake anti-matter for dark matter. An electron destroys itself with a positron, the positron (not the proton) is the anti-particle of the electron. For dark matter to destroy physical matter it means dark matter is the anti-matter of some particles which can't really be the case if they only interact by gravity.

    The fundamental phenomenon of dilation explains dark matter/galaxy rotation curves. It's the phenomenon behind the phrase "mass becomes infinite at the speed of light". A graph illustrates its squared nature, dilation increases at an exponential rate the closer you get to the speed of light. A time dilation graph illustrates the same phenomenon, it's not just time that gets dilated. Dilation will occur wherever there is an astronomical quantity of mass because high mass means high momentum. This includes the centers of very high mass stars and the overwhelming majority of galaxy centers. The mass at the center of our own galaxy is dilated. This means that there is no valid XYZ coordinate we can attribute to it, you can't point your finger at something that is smeared through spacetime. In other words that mass is all around us. Dilation does not occur in galaxies with low mass centers because they do not have enough mass to achieve relativistic velocities. It has recently been confirmed in 6 very low mass galaxies including NGC 1052-DF2 and DF4 to have no dark matter. In other words they have normal rotation rates. All binary stars have normal rotation rates for the same reason.

    Dark matter is a buzzword for funding and it doesn't exist

  • @earthsky
    @earthsky19 сағат бұрын

    No. Dark matter is an integral part of theories of the universe. And there IS evidence for dark matter, because it does produce a gravitational effect. But "evidence" doesn't mean "certainty." Perhaps you're right, and there is no dark matter. We won't know unless scientists do studies like this one.

    Isn't H3+ Tritium Heaviest Isotope Of Hydrogen Used In Hydrogeb Bombs?

  • @dim-flower
    @dim-flower2 күн бұрын

    Kind of? They use an initial fission core to produce loads of loose neutrons, which slam into Lithium deuteride. The reaction with the Lithium releases Tritium, which fuses with Deuterium (D, or 2H).

  • @dim-flower
    @dim-flower2 күн бұрын

    I misread, H3+ is a Trihydrogen Catation, the most common interstellar molecule along with H2.

  • @jasonpinkney1150
    @jasonpinkney1150Күн бұрын

    Good question as they didn't really explain what H3+ is. It's 3 protons and 2 electrons rather loosely bound. Tritium is 2 protons and 1 neutron in one nucleus (plus 2 e- if it's neutral). Then you might say, "well isn't H3+ just ionized lithium?". No it isn't because the 3 protons in H3+ are located in separate nuclei, whereas lithium has (typically) 3 neutrons bound with the 3 protons in one nucleus.

    Night side of Jupiter ?? Haha so it’s like a tidal lock with the sun? Can someone explain

  • @toothlessreptile6657
    @toothlessreptile66572 күн бұрын

    It's not tidally locked, I'm pretty sure it means the half of Jupiter that isn't currently facing the Sun. The dark matter was probably always there but since it doesn't interact with light we weren't looking for it on Jupiter. Alternatively, this short is incorrect, I didnt factcheck 😅

  • @jonglopez5400
    @jonglopez54002 күн бұрын

    @@toothlessreptile6657 if it isnt locked then the 'dark side' is not fixed and it makes this video become a misinformation.

    The side of Jupiter that is dark when turned away from the sun. All worlds have a day side and a night side. Some worlds rotate slowly, such as Venus (243 Earth days) or Mercury (59 Earth days). Some rotate more quickly such as Earth (1 day) or Jupiter (about 10 hours). What they're talking about here is observing a part of Jupiter that was nighttime, when the observations were made.

    There is evidence for dark matter. There's just no direct detection. This is more evidence, but, again, not a direct detection.
