Solar Superstorm Produced Stunning Auroras

Yesterday, space weather forecasters began predicting a “severe” solar storm. When it came, it was even stronger than predicted, at “extreme” levels. So, many people saw amazing displays of auroras last night from places at low latitudes. And the images came pouring in. This is just a taste of what we received at EarthSky Community Photos, and in our social media feeds. Thank you to all who submitted photos! See aurora photos from around the world here:

last night I looked up at the sky at around 10:00 and saw little white rays dancing in the sky and I had no idea that the aurora was supposed to reach that far down (I live in East Tennessee) so I thought I was going insane. The sky turned red in the north and some green spots moved in later. It was beautiful

Wow, what an experience. They were supposed to reach to North Texas, too, but it was cloudy here :(

So beautiful. I was very surprised to see the photo from Arizona, that the auroras were visible so far south in the US! Love how they are a mix of different colors depending on where one is watching. What a moment it must have been to watch the auroras and see a meteor appear! 🌌💜💙🩵💚🩷🧡💛☄️

That would be a pretty big flare! However, you never know. We are at or near solar maximum and it could happen!

@@earthsky because of global warming! Why are you still running a website using electrons???? You should be rubbing sticks together somewhere. Please explain, to the rest of us with common sense and brain cells, how in your cult of global warming religion, that a one degree change in temperature could cause the world to end????

On May 10th, 2024, HAARP conducted experiments to artificially create aurora-like glows or "airglow" in the ionosphere by exciting electrons with high-frequency radio waves. The "Making the Invisible Visible" experiment tested if hot electrons produced by HAARP's radio transmissions could generate an aurora-like phenomenon called STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement)."
