Why don't you try to use a rubber heavy ball like in the old mouses to have more friction? Also you may want to have like a flexible net for creating the suspension and also reduce the amount of dust collected. Not sure how good this may work with the drive wheels, maybe a dented gear instead? For sure you can 3D print something too. PS: I started following and watching this channel for my son, but I may be engaged just as much as he is and it's a lot :D
