I believe you are mistaken that the “native 3-D source” is being converted to 2-D imagery. In actuality, only one image of the two (the left eye) is used to create the 2-D version. View it in its original 3-D version to see the *entirety* of the resolution, divided between your two eyes.

I would also like to add something: while the film grain has been removed and the image has a slight waxy look, this video is actually not representative of the 4k version. I saw it and the resolution and clarity is much higher than shown here. However, the denoiser used on the film and the youtube compression do not mix well together. For those that are undecided, keep this in mind. After seeing the 4k version I think I prefer it over the blu-ray original. I do recommend for people to see it live and decide for themselves.

I don’t care what people say. The shark looks frightening in this installment. The underwater shot of it lunging at the camera, always makes me uncomfortable. Great review and biased for once, that’s refreshing… Personally I don’t buy DVDS and blu-rays (let alone 4Ks) anymore, but I remember selling my copy of the blu-ray because it actually changed nothing from the DVD version. I even think the lighting was better in the latter…

I'll take the better skin tone of the 4k any day over the artificial sharpness filter and cold light of the blu ray. I don't care about the resolution, 1080p is plenty for me, but for whatever reason 4k restorations seem to have better color... have no idea why.

The 3d system used was called Arrivision 3d and created an upper and lower portion of the 35mm frame for the left and right eye. This would have been projected through a polarising splitter. A cheap way for getting 3d on a single projector/camera setup. However the results are that you see chromatic abberation (the softening) and increased grain (as seen on the bluray). There isn't any information on the 35mm image to give you the amount of detail we are seeing on the 4k, so it must have come from somewhere. The AI upscaling allows them to dnr the grain down a notch, and use the AI to put the detail back in with extra sharpness. In this case, faces sometimes have a weird look. This issue is similar to what you can see on Aliens, with some faces of the marines in the background on the Sulaco not looking right. I don't agree with your analysis here that AI wasn't used. In fact, I believe they used the original 2k scan and used the process to upscale it. There is simply no way you can get that detail out of an Arrivision 3D frame.

Brilliant review. I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this but it looks as if the picture on the BD has been slightly bought in closer to view as it looks as if the picture has been cropped at the top of the screen, plus on the BD you get to see slightly less of the picture at the sides of the screen than on the 4K disc.

Ummm straight up MISINFORMATION! You proved that it is actually AI and it was absolutely AI upscaled. With the speckles being in the same place you have in-fact proven that AI has been used to simply upscale the existing transfer of the film rather than a new scan or restoration. I am not at all sure as to what you think AI upscaling entails but it has nothing to do with cleaning up dust and speckles and everything to do with fake sharpening and fake detail creation and that is exactly what we see here. Looks horrendous and has no place in film restoration

Actually, AI can remove dirt and specks and they've been using software for years to automatically detect and highlight scratches, specks, etc. Again, the "flattening" of the 3D at higher res + HDR is what is most likely causing the strange look.

And the flattening of the 3D at higher res plus HDR is not at all what is causing the strange look. It's lazy poorly applied AI upscaling. It's clear as day in more than one shot. In the case of this 4K in particular? It's both a flawed transfer and AI combining together to make for a really poor release overall. Jaws 3 should have stayed on blu ray. Plus the AI software people are talking about is fairly new. And it doesn't really remove specs and other things. That's a completely different bit of software. The AI software people are discussing is the one used solely to upscale the image.

@@quinndexter This is why I put "flatten" in quotes. Occasionally you will see a 3D movie referred to as "Flat" or shown flat, etc. But I should have been more clear. To your point on upscaling whatever they did in 2016. Assuming they had a 2K scan and the left eye/top frame is basically (not technically) half that resolution, that would be some pretty damn good AI upscaling. But I think there are too many scenes where this looks pretty good for this to not be a fresh 4K scan, so more likely upscaled from that. I also don't agree that there wasn't that much detail on the original source. There are some stock photos that show quite a bit of detail left in the faces in the audience and plenty of detail in the middle and foreground. These are in movie sequences, not publicity shots.

This is exactly what they look like with the sharpening, color and creating fake detail and inconsistent focus in the picture. The fact is this film was never going to look good or even great in 4K. It barely looked ok on blu ray. The cameras used and the transfer itself for the 3D filming did not lend itself well to 2D at all. So the answer is that some of the anomalies are due to the poor transfer and also AI slapped on top of it. Notice how this particular video leaves out screenshots you can find online that show clearly that AI was used? That's because it doesn't fit the narrative that is trying to be pushed. Frogotten Tomatoes has some affiliate links that need to be sold, and there's a lot of people cancelling and refusing to buy this 4K. So he pumps out this video to tell people "the truth" and how it's not AI...but it absolutely is and anyone that actually knows what entails AI upscaling can see that. The PR is not good with this release so moves are being made to try to convince people to still buy this and that the criticisms are overblown. I have seen this transfer in person and trust me they are not.

I appreciate your comments and you seem to have researched it better than I have, but again I'll have to judge the disc itself if I can import it. Based on these images I see alot of ñatural grain, scratches and dirt, so I'd assume AI would remove alot of that. These screenshots don't have that waxy or processed appearance as the something like Aliens or True Lies on 4k. I'll judge for myself once I get the disc and not reply solely on screenshots on a KZread chanel.

@Forgotten Tomatoes, Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to see a comparison to the Blu-ray since that's all we had before today. I think the 4K looks like a big improvement over the old Blu-ray. The edge halos are fixed in the 4K, which made the BD hard to watch. I'm still wondering if the Blu-ray disc in the 4K package is the new master in 1080P or is it just the old BD disc. My 4K copy has been on pre-order and arrives tomorrow.

Its never looked good ,it was never going to look good in 4k and that blu-ray included with the 4k is the same blu-ray release from years ago. Hi! Maybe you are confusing things. The issue with I.A. are mainly the reconstruction of human faces with poor source or out-of-focus faces, creating these zombies, nothing to do with scratches, dirt or other elements of the film.

I appreciate your comments and you seem to have researched it better than I have, but again I'll have to judge the disc itself if I can import it. Based on these images I see alot of ñatural grain, scratches and dirt, so I'd assume AI would remove alot of that. These screenshots don't have that waxy or processed appearance as the something like Aliens or True Lies on 4k. I'll judge for myself once I get the disc and not reply solely on screenshots on a KZread chanel.
@Forgotten Tomatoes, Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to see a comparison to the Blu-ray since that's all we had before today. I think the 4K looks like a big improvement over the old Blu-ray. The edge halos are fixed in the 4K, which made the BD hard to watch. I'm still wondering if the Blu-ray disc in the 4K package is the new master in 1080P or is it just the old BD disc. My 4K copy has been on pre-order and arrives tomorrow.

I don't get what people thought they were going to get from a garbage looking movie from 1983. Its never looked good ,it was never going to look good in 4k and that blu-ray included with the 4k is the same blu-ray release from years ago. It probably should have been left at blu-ray instead of going 4k and now you get scenes that look like a colorforms playset
Nah. It's both. It's the source and lazily applied AI like Topaz. Arguing that there is no AI here is laughable.

every stereo got a lot surround information and these old 2.0 tracks sound amazing when using dolby pro logic II or other decoder. "first blood" got the most natural and impressive surround-thunderstorm in the woods when rambo got rid of the cops at night.
Hi! Maybe you are confusing things. The issue with I.A. are mainly the reconstruction of human faces with poor source or out-of-focus faces, creating these zombies, nothing to do with scratches, dirt or other elements of the film.
Maybe your confusing things, A.I WOULD HAVE FOUND SCRATCHES AND DIRT.....Does it ever occur to rocket geniuses that a 3D movie made in the early 1980s was NEVER meant to be seen in 3D...Does it not occur to rocket geniuses that the human faces look poor because again ITS A 3D MOVIE FROM THE 1980s... I know people have a hard time grasping things BUT Jaws 3D looks EXACTLY the same on Blu-ray as it does 4k because your taking again a 3D film, that already kinda looked like garbage and trying to make it 4k. It was always blurry and weird looking in some spots because its meant to be 3D. And NO that isn't some new blu-ray its the exact same disc from the original blu-ray release years ago and hmmm it seems to look the same as the new 4k that "special" people keep crying about A.I about

@@tjdw5251 I don't think you're noticing the fact that how they recorded this movie in 3D is part of why the video sometimes look like dokie but this 4k transfer 100% looks better than the blu ray mane. Plus the chroma effect is part of why the movie can get distorted. There, end of conversation lmao
@@pogo3751 shooting it in 3D would have made the 4k transfer look rough and they likely used AI “enhancing” to try and get it to artificially match the other Jaws films on 4k. However, it is a FACT that they have used AI. The 4k looks the way it does currently because of AI, not the 3D. There uninformed person, there’s the end of conversation. L.M.A.O.
