i have purchased every 4k bluray release on this list except for i still know, and the fugitive definitely deserves the top spot even without dolby vision it was outstanding

I have bad enough vision that I can't really tell the resolution diff, but the color grading is much much better on 4ks.

Same here on my phone because it isn't a 4k phone. But I guarantee you that if you could see these examples on a 4k TV you'd see much better detail or resolution too.

Great video. However, I miss my top of the year. Enter the dragon, Rio Bravo and Love Actually. Waiting to receive Clue in 4K. Moreover, the English box set of Bruce Lee films in 4K is a masterpiece. Complete versions of the films and new documentaries makes it one of my favourite boxset ever.

Fargo 4K is one of the best.

Good choices, especially The Others, Red Eye, The Fugitive, and I think you forgot The Abyss which was way OVERDUE for Blu-ray and 4K. Also I'd like to see The Mothman Prophecies, The RIng and The Grudge in 4K.

Good pick with eXistenZ, it would be hard not to improve on the blu-ray.

Titanic should’ve been on this list For Sure, and Young Guns is not quite as good as I expected with a red tone to the faces in a number of scenes. My old special edition dvd looks better. Stephen Spielberg’s Duel was a Far better transfer

@thomaslytle5519, Titanic is definitely best of 2023, but keep in mind that the prior blu-ray was one of the best blu-ray's of all time (ironically the DVD was often used as reference material prior to blu-ray). The new 4K of Titanic is top quality for the format, but the titles on this list all had known issues or low quality transfers on their prior releases.

Great video between blu ray and 4k quality. But I got a question to ask. Now like Point Break it says remastered 4k. And the Steelbook of Point Break saying native 4k which one is better. Because I am confused on it. Because Point Break is like one of my favorite movies but I don't know which one has the better 4k quality picture.

@jasonschannel1315, I can only confirm in the U.S. that any version of Point Break (1991) from Shout! Factory is native 4K. Shout also includes a 1080p blu-ray disc that was created from the same 4K source, which is often referred to as a "remastered blu-ray" or "remastered in 4K."

A good TV and player can clean up a lot of the issues shown on the regular Blu-Rays. Sometimes it comes down to personal preference on skin tones and color grading with HDR...a simple tweak here and there on a good OLED (color temp, brightness, calibration etc.) will make Blu-Rays look just as good in some cases. Point Break for example is basically just a different color palette/temp/brightness/ it's marginally better with minor resolution differences... some may actually prefer the Blu-Ray. In the scenes shown, Red Eye looks noticeably better, but that is from DVD of course. Dolby Vision locks you out of tinkering with most settings and is the truest way to watch (as director intended) if they oversaw the restoration. I usually prefer Dolby Vision in most cases, but it's not always a deal breaker if HDR is done correctly. The Fugitive looks great as it was scanned from an 8K master so Dolby Vision wasn't really needed in that case. The restoration will only be as good as the original film source. Digital Vs Film etc... Even with digital magic...sometimes it's easy to overdo things...similar to "remastering" albums that already sounded great to many..The scenes shown in 4K Young Guns has a horrible DNR haze over it and you can see the artificial grain. I prefer the Blu-Ray with tweaked settings. If you have a big collection of Blu-Rays and are a movie enthusiast, I would recommend investing in a good TV and player and see for yourself!

I live near WB and there's a giant poster on the outer studio wall promoting the Fugitive 4K release, been there for a few months.

@@forgottentomatoes7301 Sometimes there will be a poster for a classic movie that mentions 4K anniversary release toward the bottom, but this is one is different specifically plugging the 4K release in big text. I live on the block and go over there for work about once a month.

@Getguti I'm in agreement with you, but don't forget, they hated the first one too, just the sequel more. I think the box office was about timing. It would have done better if they had been ready for a September/October release.

That's not the point. Studios don't care what you think. It's great studios are releasing films that weren't successful.

It's funny how the new releases also have a lot more image noise, almost like all the old HD releases were ruined with DNR. (I am NOT saying we don't need UHD, heck I'm 100% in favor of 8K Bluray the moment anyone dares start recording movies in 8K, but it's obvious that first generation Bluray movies were given horrifying digital abuse.)

4K doesn’t look appreciably better over blue ray, but Dolby Vision is great, and much better than hdr10; Atmos can be fantastic, but rarely takes advantage of the format, and the price of 4ks is way too high. Really should be dropped 25-40 percent.

Dolby Vision isn't a "signature" of Sony 4K releases. Dolby Vision is ubiquitous on releases by all the studios.

@MrCREWCRUSHIN95 Sony's signature or recipe for catalogue titles is a 4K restoration with Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos. There isn't one other studio releasing 4K Blu-ray's that guarantee you Dolby Vision/Atmos, let alone at the quality that Sony presents their releases at. They have even gone back to re-release their earlier HDR10 titles in Dolby Vision. So, yes I would call it their signature at this point.

Some releases of 2023 were very late, point break, sleepy hollow, young guns which is not available in UK!!! And wheres Top Secret And Airplane, Wheres the 4k of big trouble in little china and Cocoon , Passenger 57 the list goes on.

@branscombe_ Truman Show is another great 4K release but it already had a pretty good Blu-ray and it was definitely considered for this list. Because this channel is primarily about comparing picture quality between releases, this Top 10 was focused on how much of a difference their was in the 4K upgrade compared to the prior release. But, The Truman Show is still definitely one to upgrade to 4K if you are a fan of the movie. And the 4K transfer of that is absolutely up there with the best you can get on 4K.

Very nice comparison. I will stick to DVD/Blu-ray. They give the best texture and natural film feel. 4K is just a "beautify" feature you see on camera phones and a marketing ploy for consumers to spend on bigger TVs. It just bumps up the color or hyper-smooth layers and no you are not watching movies to zoom in on a few elements to satisfy a 4K purchase.
