Great timing! 👍🏻 Did a double-bill of Die Hard 1 & 2 in 4K myself on Christmas Eve. 😎 Thank you for doing this comparison. 🙏🏻 Merry Christmas. 🎅 🎄

And what a sequel it is. Today they can't even make a halfway decent movie and they still make a sequel for it anyway. But back then, they did not cheat the audience. And the fact that they exiled Renny Harlin to direct-to-video when he has Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger on his resume is ridiculous.

I'm mainly waiting for Die Hard 3 and 4, which are my favorites. The first Die Hard came to disc, so no doubt the others will follow.

Note to self if anyone is watching "Die hard 2: Die Harder" on a streaming service: They reused the audio from the 2007 Blu-ray release (1997's recording of the 20th Century Studios fanfare) and they didn't even bother remastering the audio with the 1982 Fox fanfare with the 1981 20th Century Fox logo that is stretched

Man, it's toss up but I think I prefer the blu ray to the 4k. Too many of the 4k scenes are completely drained of color and/or too dark.

A few thoughts from a humble video editor who's starting to do more serious color correction work these days ------- My main conclusions are that the blu ray is washed in too many red tones, and the 4k edition often over-corrects this issue while introducing contrast problems. The 4k is very contrasty- The darks got darker, and I'd say it's not an improvement- we start losing actors' eyes and other details in the shadows. I like a nice contrasted look usually, but the 4k leans into it too much for my liking. 4k is sharper, and I think overall that looks ok. But a lot of people prefer softness in the skin tones. Sharper skin details have become more and more desired as cameras evolve to offer more and more resolution. (Many actors hate the sharpening of their skin- it definitely puts more pressure on makeup artists to do a great job on the talents' money maker to hide things like acne scars.) Die Hard 2 has a lot of outdoor scenes in the snow, so I don't mind the more blueish tone present in the 4k usually. The redness in the blu ray made it feel too LA-esque, and that look only makes sense when it cuts back to characters in LA. Skin tones really suffer in the 4k. Faces get much more shadowed because of the boosted contrast, the (over done) reduced red hues means skin turns colder and less human looking in many cases. One exception here is that i think the black skin tones are nicer in the 4k- more defined because of the uptick in sharpness, and the cooler wash is more complimenting to facial features. But 90% of the white faces just have a rough go in 4k. Thornburg has a close-up on the plane where the red is dialed back but not done consistently- leaving blotchy red and green squares on his face. But then there's the odd close-up such as Holly's on the airplane which instead goes in the other direction and jacks up the red saturation, creating a lobster/sunburnt look. Horrific. Inconsistency is really annoying. Ultimately, i think both versions have pros and cons. I'd like to see another version that goes halfway between the problems of the blu ray and and the over compensation of the 4k.

At this point, I think the Fox and Touchstone stuff is going to be locked in the streaming vault forever. Anything else we get on 4K disc is going to be a recent theatrical Marvel/Star Wars/Pixar and that's it. They refused A Haunting in Venice on 4K. All the Die Hard movies are already done in 4K. People will point to the James Cameron stuff being released, but that's because he literally has total control. He probably refused to let Disney release them digitally if they didn't also do a 4K disc.

@@forgottentomatoes7301 I feel it's not that Cameron is technically in control. It's that he's effectively in control because you do whatever it is the man who makes you $2 billion per movie wants!! Lol. He may not actually have the authority, but he gets what he wants when he makes you that much money per project!

@Jimburai I don't believe for a second that this was planned by either Disney or Cameron and had everything to do with the strike. That opened up Cameron's schedule and Disney needed content to release. This is why Prey got released over a year from Hulu. They were never going to release that movie on blu-ray. The disney plus shows made little sense as well, even though people still bought them. My guess is now that the strike is over, we are going to see a massive drop off in Disney blu-ray releases after The Cameron stuff comes out in March. I only mentioned Cameron because there will be people who use that as an excuse that Disney is still supporting physical media. I wouldn't be surprised if reps for Disney don't use it. And I would be willing to bet that had Cameron remastered these movies before Fox got a chance to release them on disc, Disney would be doing to same thing they are doing right now with the Die Hard movies.

@@forgottentomatoes7301 I'm not contesting any of your arguments outside of James Cameron. I think he gets basically whatever he wants from Disney because Disney knows he makes all the money. I think you make a good point about the Disney+ Blu-ray releases with just wanting something coming out during the strikes, plus with Iger coming back everyone's cutting back on content in general to focus on quality (that's based on what Iger said himself and I'm also just hoping it's true lol). I think it's fair to say that we're not going to see a lot of physical releases outside of Cameron releases. He's for sure getting another 4k Blu-ray release out of Avatar 3. I think him getting what he wants is shown by the 3D Blu-ray. What company greenlights a 3D Blu-ray right now? Outside of a creative that gets whatever he wants. I pretty much agree with you on all fronts and I'm just saying that James Cameron is the exception to those rules. However, there are a couple positive signs. Iger specifically mentioned how physical media should be a priority (that was said before the Australia thing happened, but that is just one market that supposedly was pretty small anyway... IDK). Also, 20th Century has been in an adjustment phase since the merger and the regime change probably messed with progress there as well. But I heard it mentioned lately that the restructuring and adjustments (whatever you want to call them) have essentially wound down and they'll start ramping up production again. So, hopefully, if we combine Iger's physical media comment with the 20th Century news, we start seeing catalogue titles on physical media soon. At least announcements soon. Also, James Cameron is known for pushing tech forward. Maybe his movies (technically 20th Century films) getting worked on and released means a step forward for 20th Century physical releases. This is all hopeful speculation though. I think your comments are more likely, but I like to dream... I want my Die Hard trilogy on 4k Blu-ray!!
