Thank god for pira see. Without that, so many things would not be preserved today. So many video games so many shows and movies. so many software. If there wasn’t Pira see a very high percent of old movies or shows would not be available today at all.

Another thing I worry about with all things going digital is that they will stop releasing all the extras that they include on Blu-Ray and DVD. Behind the scenes, director's comments, alternate versions of the films, deleted scenes, etc. These are great not only for just movie buffs, but for people learning about film making.

I worked with Disney during the HD-DVD/Blu-ray "war". This time was also the beginnings of digital media. Studios do lose things. Disney lost the digitally archived box artwork for well over 2000 releases when it migrated to a different database. One on the projects my team was assigned was to reach out to online retailers and pull the best quality image we could find to put back into the database. Also, universal studios had a large fire on their back lot that destroyed some digital archives and film masters among other things.

I bought the Blade Runner collector's edition that comes with the silver briefcase on both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray before the format war got settled. I hadn't even bought a player yet. I was such a big fan, I wanted to make sure it didn't sell out and I had it on whichever format won. I ended up selling the HD-DVD version when Blu-Ray won out. I wish I had kept it, now that I'm looking back. It would have been a cool piece of history to have in my collection. Of course, I still have the Blu-Ray version.

I noticed I couldn’t find Cocoon a few years ago when I wanted to watch it for the first time in years. It wasn’t a big deal though, I just went to the standard pirate websites and got a version of it easily. In a case like this where there is literally no legal option I don’t feel at all guilty.

I stopped giving these criminal corporations my money and I don't listen to criminal governments. I and everyone is told that we are not allowed to do what we want with our own property. Don't know if you are old enough to remember but DVDs used to come with a second disc which had a digital copy of the movie you bought and you were encouraged to upload it to your computer or lap top, so you could watch it whenever and however you wanted to. The criminal government says you can physically lend your copy of the film to whomever you want and as many people you want but if you do that "Digitally" you are now breaking the law !? GFY !!!!!!!! I will do what I want with my own property that I bought and paid for, F U ! For those idiots who think that the governments and corporations aren't all criminals, just look at what Sony is doing on Dec. 31st. They are stealing everyone's bought and paid for content and will be erasing or removing all the content that they sold to Discovery, that you bought and paid for and the reason they are giving is that you weren't buying the content, you were buying a license to view the content. Well if that were true, then again, they stole from every customer. Netflix sells you a license in the form of a subscription which allows you to watch everything on their platform, so why was Sony charging their customers a license or subscription fee for every single thing they wanted. Shouldn't it have been a one time or monthly subscription and not a license fee for each individual movie or TV show ? This will finally lead to more and more people, ignoring so called "Laws" made up by criminal governments to protect criminal corporations. Just like this platform, Shyte Tube's attempt to force people to watch adds or pay for add free services as just resulted in add blockers finding work arounds and people who had never heard of add blockers, now installing them in droves !!! I have been banned from commenting for 24 hrs, which is illegal ! Shyte tube is taking away people's right to free speech and that ban also comes with a threat, which is also illegal. Threatening people is illegal and the ban comes with a threat that if this continues they will delete my channel. Of course since I don't make videos and don't make them money, they threaten and ban me but some cunt like SSSniper (cunt) Wolf gets nothing for months and months after DOXING an other creator and when the public outrage and all the tweets and videos on Shyte Tube condonning them, what did they do ? Delete her channel and block her from ever being able to abuse other people ? NO ! The suspended her channel for 6 months and after that she will be allowed to post more shit videos that little cucked boys and dumb cunts like her watch and support because she has a few million subs that generate millions of dollars for Shyte Tube and I haven't even mentioned that in some of the videos against the cunt show that her entire channel was stolen from someone else and that she actually didn't only steal the idea for her channel, she actually stole the persona of this one girl in particular. This cunt stole the identity/persona of an other YT creator, her mannerisms the way she dresses and does her make up and her content and what the channel is about. There is nothing real about SSSniper Wolf Cunt but Shyt Tube will do nothing to her because the cunt makes them cash, plus, look at all the creators who either don't make Shyt Tube money that got canceled and their channel deleted and even those who made lots of money for them because they got to put a thousand adds on their 5 or 10 minut videos got canceled and their channels deleted because they were making videos that went against "THE MESSAGE" Sorry for the rant but in closing. A few weeks ago I happened to found one single copy of Cocoon at a Newbury Comics, a new copy that hasn't been opened yet and yet it was an old edition, having all three stickers on the cover keeping it sealed. I've been buying DVDs for many years now and I ain't gonna stop now.

Since physical media degrades, it is also important to exercise your right to make archival copies of the media you own.

I totally agree with you. In 2015 when some people helped me move, they teased me about all of my DVDs by asking "Have you ever heard of streaming?". I responded that a lot of my DVDs are not available on streaming, and even if they are available, they can disappear with little-to-no warning. Same with e-books: I read an article maybe 10 years ago about someone whose e-books disappeared from their accounts because the seller decided (for whatever reason) that they wanted to take them back. I always prefer a hard-copy because then no one can take it away from me.

Even if they do not disappear they may have been digitally altered. Both books and movies are being edited to remove or change content that may "offend". Nothing is considered off limits ESPECIALLY classics. Unless you've read or seen the original how would you even know?

Well, we don't need to go back in time - Sony just recently (on 6th of December 2023) deleted over 1000 series of film or in other word more than 10.000 films from its library and therefore from the library of its customers - with - you guessed it - no refunds. So yes - if one really likes a movie - he/she should buy a physical copy of it.

I bought Northern Exposure series on DVD. I am watching the series on Amazon Prime at the moment and they deleted a scene where Maurice mentioned something about questioning Roslyn and Cicely being lesbians. I guess somebody got offended....

This is exactly what I have said to so many people. Purchasing movies, music, and video games physically literally means you OWN them. I have a huge collection of DVD’s, Blu-ray’s, CD’s, Video Games, Cassette’s, and VHS’s. Most of them are part of my father’s collection and they still run perfectly fine.

I like blurays, if I can get them for a good price. To a certain point, I think its a good idea to buy the movies you like on bluray and to avoid streaming like the plague. However, I do not buy 4k blurays since they cannot be read by a computer drive. However, at a certain point you have to understand that practically everything goes down in value over time! So it's not worth becoming a huge hoarder of blurays and dvds, beyond the ones that you like and can obtain very cheaply.

At least as long as your DVD drive is working and can read those discs, because it becomes harder and harder every year to buy a new DVD drive. Also the media deteriorate with time depending on the technology they've been produced with. The pressed DVDs might be durable. But with DVD-Rs or DVD-RWs it is often the case that the medium is just some photosensitive material that decomposes with time and the medium becomes unable to read. Many of my own archived DVD-Rs are no longer readable after 10 or 15 years despite keeping them in good conditions and their surface not being scratched or anything :q I keep wondering what technology could I use these days for my archived data and backups to make it last more than 10 years :q

And thanks for reminding me. I just watched it. It's 38 years old and yet it's still so good to watch.

I was living in St. Petersburg FL at the time they were filming Cocoon. I was at the time unemployed as I had just been fired a week before they were setting up near me. They had a casting call for extras so I went down to check it out. They signed me up and I spent two days just sitting on bleachers in the exact same spot wearing the exact same clothes for the shuffleboard scene. You can see me for about a second though not the part of me that counts. The view of me is obstructed by a post so you can only see my arm and shoulder and part of my back. Grrr lol. I was so disappointed when I saw the movie but at least I made $100 out of it and very briefly met Ron Howard who as it happens is a really nice person in person.

@@kesamek8537 You may not, but you can give people your hard disk drive full of music that, as long as it's not corrupted or broken, you can easily give it to someone without internet connection. You just have to put it in a brand new itunes library that doesn't have your account hooked up to it.

Buy physical media, and then rip it to keep it in digital format. The annoying thing with DVDs and Blu rays are all the warnings about downloading and piracy and copyright you're forced to watch before you can enjoy your movie.

It is in a digital format on DVD and Blu-ray; it's more a transformation. The only thing you're doing when ripping is decrypting it, possibly compressing, maybe putting into a new container (mp4, etc).

In the last few months I got into a hobby of buying DVDs at thrift stores, archiving the original disc images, and making a converted version in a modern playback format. Occasionally I come across DVDs that are still in sealed packaging. It's surprisingly common for these sealed, never touched DVDs to be unreadable. Usually the errors pop up on the 2nd layer of the recording. Single layer disks are more reliable. Out of hundreds of DVDs I've come across only 2 "DVD-18" discs - a rare disc type that is both double sided *and* double layer, so their total capacity is 18GB. Both were faulty. I built up a pile of sealed DVDs that I didn't bother imaging for a while. Being sealed, I assumed they were fine and I mentally checked them off my shopping list. When I finally opened them and worked through that pile, I started to think I have worse luck with sealed DVDs than I do with used ones. It makes me think that excess unsold DVDs are stored badly, causing many of them to be ruined before they finally got donated to the thrift stores where I bought them. This is in Florida - so it might be outdoor humidity exposure or it might be heat. Both are bad for optical discs. The good thing about used DVDs is they have probably lived their life indoors.

When Alien was first replaced as a deluxe box set with the first three sequels, it cam with some VERY interesting extras, including an 'Isolated soundtrack' This was basically whatever raw sound was captured at the time of principal photography for each foot made the final cut. This is absolutely fascinating if you are interested in film production, because Alien was DEFINITELY a movie that was MADE in post production, whatever the actors felt about the set design.

This happened to me when I downloaded the album "Vinnie Vincent Invasion: Invasion" on iTunes. Even though I paid for the album, recently it disappeared from my library and the store. This cannot happen to all the CDs I still have from the 90s. Be aware that even if you pay for something that is digital, it can still be taken from you.

Physical Media is important. DVD, Blu Ray and Video Games as well. Having a disc and actually owning something is important. They can take away anything online and on streaming. Ownership and physical media needs to always be around.

@@VEC7ORlt Especially those who archive and download content from the Wii Shop Channel/ISOs/ROMs/Torrent files that include movies, music, tv shows, etc. that are always readily available to download so long as you have stable internet connection and such to download them for offline use.

I started buying a lot movies, TV show and documentaries on DVD and Blu ray a few years back. This all started when talk began about canceling certain movies because of their content. I make my own digital copies and use EMBY to play them. Best decision I ever made. Have my own personal steaming service.

I have owned No Escape for many years on DVD. I love that movie. Sony and Discovery has shown people why physical media is important, Amazon did it a while ago as well with some books if I remember correctly, and unless some sort of lawsuit gets through to challenge or cause change with copyright law, it is going to remain this way for a while.

I LOVED the Cocoon movies as a kid. Bought them on DVD years ago and I am never getting rid of them. Sad to hear younger generations can't see it.

That's why my husband and I have our own movies that we love to watch over and over without being charged to watch them. Awesome video! 👍

I have it and the abyss in two separate collections . DVDs are plentiful in the UK.

One example i always use to explain why i have blurays/dvds is Alex Rider. Alex Rider was an Amazon Original show. Yet now, in the UK at least, it's not available on prime anymore. If an Amazon original show can go off Amazon. Anything can go off anything. Even if something is available on streaming. It could go away at any point.

Thank you for putting this out, it's so important to have physical media.. .. However to give credit to streaming, it's a great option but it should ALWAYS be an option!

Blu-ray, DVD, and VHS version of Cocoon are all available at Amazon Germany, all in stock. You can even choose between different versions (standard, extended, UK import, French import, etc.) Seems to be a US-only problem.

It's down to titles so yes you can find Cocoon today but I'm sure many Germans can give examples like Cocoon in Germany. I do suspect though rights issues maybe more complicated in English speaking countries as they demand more money for titles. I'd say if you can, buy your fave movies and TV shows, especially the more niche titles, that won't be mass produced.

I had a similar problem with The Island (2005). It's a visually stunning movie and deserves to be watched in the highest quality possible. I think the issue was that the studio had agreed to only release their movies on HD DVD, which ended up losing the format war. They did eventually release it on bluray and it looks amazing.

Cocoon is still occasionally made available to TV stations in countries with blanket music clearance agreements. It's probably just too expensive to make it widely available. When Netflix licensed the first two seasons of Peaky Blinders it was too expensive to get much of the music that was used on the BBC cleared for streaming so it licensed different music for the platform. These issues are very common. Only last month the BBC wanted to make available the first story of Doctor Who for the show's 60th anniversary but it was blocked by the son of one of the story's writers because no streaming agreement on the BBC had been negotiated with the writer's estate. Unravelling rights issues can be time consuming, expensive and sometimes impossible. There are even films made in the last 30 years for which no one knows who currently owns the rights to and are effectively dead when it comes to streaming or physical media.

Very glad I found your channel. As an older guy I learned this lesson by getting stung in the early days of digital media. I started buying songs on my phone, but when I changed service provider I lost access to the entire library. I bought them out of convenience, and the second I did something for the sake of "convenience" I should have asked myself: what is the long con here?

Exactly. It only took a few iterations of this for me to learn that digital online copies are "rentals." I lost a handful of songs/movies when these providers changed or when I changed my phone, etc. so it's just not a smart way to go.

Did you know that there’s a "deactivate" list for blu rays? A studio adds a movie to the list, and it goes in the next firmware release for all the major player makers so the next time you update your firmware that particular disc stops working. To encourage people to update their firmware periodically, there's also a list of decryption keys, so periodically discs come out with a new key, forcing people to update firmware to get the latest key list. I own a couple of discs that only play on old firmware and a couple that only play on recent firmware. And I love "Unearthed Films". They’re the folks who re-released "Rock and Rule".

But if you buy new discs every year, you may need a firmware update from time to time, as the studios release discs with new keys that your old firmware doesn’t have. That's when you’re forced to choose, update the firmware on your player to be compatible with the latest disc at the risk of having one or more older discs refusing to play with the new firmware. Remember, the company who contributed most to blu ray development in both hours and dollars was the same company that thought root kits in CDs was a good thing.

I still tell family and friends that the best gifts they can give me are physical media. Be it books, music, or movies. I want it in my hands and on the shelf. And I have Cocoon on DVD.

NO. The nature of media is absolutely not the issue. WHO HOLDS THE DIGITAL COPY definitely is. If it was you, ON LOCAL STORAGE, it wouldn't matter what anyone else would want to do with that digital copy.

My family makes fun of me about my physical media. But I collect specifically for the reasons you mentioned. But also if came quite handy too. During a bad storm and power outage. Internet was down and the family freaking out. I had my portable blu-ray player and was happy.

Usually they either run on an internal battery, or an external low voltage supply (12v usually as they're generally intended for travel use) which is easy enough to hook up via USB powerbanks or a car battery/portable supply that a lot of people have in the garage. I've been extremely greatfull for physical media in the past when my internet has gone down for several days. I have a laptop and an external BD drive that would do the same job.

Having physical copies of anything helped out when I hadn't had internet for a month during the summer. Turned to watching every dvd we had collected that was scattered about the house. It saved my sanity when there wasn't anything to do outdoors or mindlessly play video games.

Completely agree with this. I still have old DVD's, Blu Ray's, select 4K's and still have all my original music CD's. Like you said, digital copies are just rentals. Plus I like to watch a movie when I want to watch it. Not search through several streaming services only to find out it's not available. I hate that.

Isn't it funny how the streamers charge extra for what you want to see? It's nice to just pull out the DVD. If I want to see something I buy the DVD or BR and wait a couple days. I prefer BR but DVD is fine. TBH I can't tell that big of a difference if I like what I'm watching.

Cocoon is a brilliant film and a classic. It should be released on streaming services so every generation can re-discover it.

Commercials kill a movie watching experience and disrupt the music listening experience. So, i dont tend to watch TV or play the radio at all because of this. Yes, i know commercial ad revenue keeps the costs down… but, hey, thats why i buy movies and music. The content i want to watch and listen to can be done when i want and without interruptions every few minutes. I paid for the privilege, so no regrets.

⁠@@RCCarDude- yes, agreed… radio has changed a lot. Fortunately there are some organizations that have remastered those capitol records transcripts and put them out for classic radio enjoyment. There were still commercials… I recall one from binge watching Crosby and rosemary cloony for ford (if I recall). Those days of “Lewis & Martin”, “Hitchcock“, “ Edgar Allen Poe Afferlife”, “war of the worlds”, and such the like were indeed enjoyable.

What is the clip shown at 4:37? I can't place it - and searching online has come up with nothing.

This is why my "OG" Fast and Furious and True Lies ares on DVD that is handled very carefully with no scratches!

You're messing with my head. I had no idea he was that age at the time. Looking Brimley up on Wikipedia, he was only 50 years old when Cocoon came out. He was born in September of 1934; Cocoon came out in June of 1985. I remember seeing Cocoon in theaters. At the time, I thought he must have been in his 70s. I mean, I'm turning 50 in two months, and I don't look that old, don't feel that old, don't talk that old, at least I think. Or, maybe I do, and just don't notice it. Yes, I understand he was wearing make-up, but even in the movie The Thing, from 1982, it looks like he's in his late 60s at the very least. It reminds me of Carroll O'Connor in All in the Family. When that series premiered in 1971, Carroll O'Connor was only 47 years old. I think the Archie Bunker character was supposed to be in his late 40s at the start of the series. But it looked like O'Connor and his character were in their late 60s.

It's crazy how much historical TV and cinema is not accessible on streaming. Even crazier that the high budget "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" didn't even come to the UK in any form whatsoever.

This happens with music too. I am a big fan of soundtracks, and often on soundtracks will be special versions of a song not available online, sometime a soundtrack will be completely available, then a year later only certain songs will be, and often any song or clip with movie dialog will not be available at all

I have been collecting DVD's and Blue rays for a while, and recently started collecting CD's as well. Not just for the physical ownership of the media but because as a film lover all the special features are what I love.

I couldn't stop seeing this film running on TV up until I was way into my 20's! Every channel seemed to be taking turns running it every single public holiday and/or holiday season! I would've never thought for a fraction of a moment back then that I'd live too see the day where that film would be hard to see.

It’s not. There seven copies under $20 on eBay. In fact most of them between 10 and $13. There are some that are brand new close to $20. In case you haven’t noticed, so-called influencers make content that make people want to watch them not because it’s true. And if you think this person isn’t an influencer, then why are they influencing your opinion about a topic.

It seems to be a specific NA problem, as the movie is readily available on all kind of formats in Europe.

One other point: Streaming services also often trim scenes. A friend and I watch films/TV virtually (I have physical copies, she streams). We often notice streaming trims out small scenes or changes a few things, or speeds up the movie tempo slightly. A minor issue now but who knows the future?

No Escape rules! I also remember looking for True Lies years ago and not being able to find a copy. Glad that made its way around.

The Tales from the Crypt TV series is another prime example. Even though it originally aired on HBO, they never actually owned the rights to the series and the licensing for it has pretty much been up in the air since the advent of streaming. It's some of the best anthology horror out there, and only those with the physical boxset from back in the day are able to enjoy it now

This is exactly why I have my blu-ray collection. One of the most important pieces in it is a blu-ray copy of Dogma, which is a notoriously difficult movie to find on DVD let alone BR. To make it even more special, my wife and I got Jason Muse to sign it when we saw him at a comedy club a few years ago.

Yeah, I've got Dogma on laserdisc along with Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Mallrats.

I'm an independent film maker and many of the streaming services pay independents lees than a penny per view, and with DVDs I can actually get a fair return for my films. Its also very cool to go into a store and see one of my films on the shelve.

I noticed this about Cocoon a couple years back. I bought a Blu-ray overseas version that plays on US Blu-ray players, and has the English dub of it. So glad I did 👍🏼

One movie that comes to mind is Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I remember when Close Encounters of the Third Kind was first released in theaters and then on HBO and on VHS and all you could get was the theatrical version. Then a few years later they released "The Special Edition". After a while you could not find the original theatrical version anywhere. The Special Edition was all you could find. Then move forward a couple decades and the original theatrical version finally made it's reappearance along with a new director's cut called "The Collector's Edition". Spielberg's Collector's Edition didn't have the final ship's interior scene which was added in for the Special Edition. Finally in 2007, a 30th Anniversary Blu_Ray version was released with all 3 versions, and in 2017 a 4K version with all 3 versions came out. I remember in 2005, while cleaning out my father's house after he passed away, I found a VHS version of the Special Edition. I was thrilled!!! Now I know there are some film buff's out there who hate anything that's not the original theatrical versions of films, but I loved the Special Edition. Spielberg said he didn't want to include the deleted scenes of Richard Dryfuss walking into and gawking at the wonderous vast interior of the mothership, but I look at it this way. Spielberg spent the money to film that scene. Model makers had made the interior of the mothership, (no CGI at the time), and paid carpenters, grips, LD's, photogs and the actors to film those scenes and the studio insisted that Spielberg include the final scene when they fronted Spielberg $1.5 million to edit the Special Edition.

It's great that he allowed all three cuts to be on the collector's release, other films like Blade Runner have done the same and apart from honoring the work of those involved it's a fascinating exercise in understanding how editing affects a movie to have all of them watchable. I think Spielberg feels embarassed by the ET "special edition", probably because of the walkie talkies moment, but I honestly got a kick out of seeing the bonus scenes and wish they would reissue that version alongside the original theatrical someday.

Prior to the DVD, Criterion released the 1977 theatrical cut on laserdisc-!

You can always rip all of your stuff to video files, but that is, of course, time consuming, and storage can become a problem, especially for HD and 4K movies.

​@@albusplaustrum06Funai, the world's last manufacturer of VCRs ,sold their final units back in 2016. This was because worldwide sales had dropped to 750, 000. Pioneer sold their final laser disc players back in 2009.

I can't really say this is the reason I've always bought movies I want on disc but I'm glad that I've done so. Will continue to do so. I prefer having a physical copy, always have. Some i even have multiple versions of. VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray. I've never felt that I own a digital copy and now you're saying my instinct has been right all along.

I have Cocoon on VHS and I still keep most of my 80s and 90s movies and music DVDs and CDs for this very reason!

I treasure my physical media collection cause it’s like Christopher Nolan says, you own something you can hold in your hands. There’s some that it’s nice to watch digitally particularly if I’m away from home and don’t have the disc, but there’s that comforting feeling of popping a disc into my player at home and watching because it helps evoke the feeling of VHS when we used to have our VCR but without having to rewind 😅

It's absolutely perfectly possible to own something you CAN'T hold in your hands though. It's absolutely an artificial distinction. All you need to do is stop relying on "the cloud" (=other people's computers) and store on your OWN computer.

I wish more people detailed issues like this. I've been a collector of rare records since the 1980s. I DJed later on so that only increased my collecting. I've also liked buying stuff I want and keeping it - which is why when I built my first computer in the 1970s, I never sold any of the games and future consoles and computers I bought. I still enjoy going back to them so I never could bear to part with them. With the record collecting, I learned a lot about releases - why some things were rare, why some things were hard to find, and why some things were deliberately in small supply. I kind of assumed that some things just didn't sell and that was it. But no, there's licencing issues, mistakes, mispressings, legal disputes, scandals, diverse changes in tastes and so on that affect thigns greatly. For example, you can easily find any Beatles record anywhere. They're more pricey nowadays (for anything before the remasters of the last twenty years) but the simple reason is that these records never left print. They've always been available in one pressing or another - never deleted. A friend of mine back in the 1980s used to own a video library. In fact he was one of the first in Britain. He told me many times of what a headache it was then to stock videos as every single week some company would go under or there'd be some legal dispute about copyright and he'd have to remove perfectly good VHSes from rental. Or the censors revisited some title and decided to cut something and again it needed removing and he'd have to buy the film AGAIN. He gave me a few copies of films he couldn't do anything with. I think it was something like Friday the 13th where he'd had about 7 different copies of that, all unusable. Frankly anyone collecting really NEEDS to at least moderately understand the business side of what they're collecting whther it might seem drab. Because if you understand it you can not only savour and pick up stuff (or keep) things that are likely to disappear, but you can clean up at buying certain things. Thanks to these insights, I've managed to amass quite a lot of rare shit in games and records for bugger all money.

The Drew Carey show is impossible to find because of music licensing issues. One of the best comedy shows of the 90's in the US. Totally smoked because of the music used. Never got a VHS or DVD release, it only exists on tapes people made themselves from the TV set.

I use grandfather/father.son drives where I backup all the games I've played every week to a father drive, then every few months do the same to the grandfather drive.So that if shit hits the fan I don't lose too many hours of play.

This is EXACTY why I keep collecting dvd's and blu rays! I have SO MANY movies in my collection that are no longer available anywhere. For sale or on any streaming service. I have copies of True Lies ,The Abyss and Strange Days for eg. People think I'm nuts but I love cinema and the idea of only being able to watch a censored version of anything is so abhorrent to me. Especially with today's cancel culture BS. I have been fully aware of this whole digital copy bs being a bad thing since I lost a shit ton of books through my kindle because Amazon just felt like taking those books from me. (this was about 12 years ago) and so I continue to buy hardcopy books. I bought Guy Ritchies original Sherlock Holmes on Prime a few years ago and now my 'ownership' has switched to the second one (Game of Shadows?) and they tell my "you must be mistaken" when I complain. What a crock of shit. Lying bastards. I know what I bought! From there I said to myself, "well, I guess it's the same as books then. Gotta keep buying hard copies of my favourite movies" and so, I do. Thank you for this video. I no longer feel alone. xD

I feel it. In a couple of years I will need to dig up a VHS player to show my son the theatrical release of Highlander. All of the digital streaming versions have the directors cut with out the outtakes restored, and a sound track that is just lacking.

I own Limited edition "the Abyss" on VHS, very proud of that. this is the format i first saw it on when it came out. Totally agree that unless you can touch, sniff and squeeze something, you do not really own it. PPL, keep buying physical media, you'll thank me one day, you are very welcome...

Some easter eggs are rubbish. Special Skynet Edition T2... but you need to enter the date of "judgement day" and unlock with remote control, to view the actual judgement day, uncut, extended version with the deleted scenes reinstated. Pirate it... that version is just there no messing about.

I have Strange Days on blu-ray, I had to import it from overseas and buy a region free player. I also managed to score Cocoon on blu-ray before it went out of print. Excellent video!!!!

I just purchased Cocoon 1 and Cocoon 2 on one disc from Amazon for £9.99. Looking forward to watching them again.

That is why I will never get rid of my physical media, which I prefer by the way. Call me old fashioned or whatever you want, but for me CD, vinyl DVD, blu-ray for life. Plus, I get all the extras content that is usually missing with streaming.

FYI: The version of Strange Days that is on MAX is cropped from 2.39:1 to 1.78:1, destroying the shot composition that Kathryn Bigelow put together.

That was what most terrestrial tv channels here in the uk used to do to films that were in the 2.20:1, 2.35:1, 2.39:1 ratios which was very annoying and would make me switch over to another channel in disgust 😆

Yeah, I was really baffled by the decision to release the film on MAX in open matte format. I see that happen with streaming retailers too (Universal and WB have been known to do that on certain retailers except Movies Anywhere, ironically).

Yup. I've been saying this for years. Do not get rid of your physical media. Edit: Regarding Cameron's film _Strange Days_ ... I actually own that title on laserdisc. In fact, I have quite a few titles on laserdisc that are not available on DVD or Blu-ray, including the original theatrical releases of all three original _Star Wars_ films. I've managed to take good care of them also to prevent disc rot and even have a working Pioneer Laserdisc player to watch them.

This is why I keep my DVDs & Blu-rays. I will make a copy to put on a media server so I can watch them whenever & wherever. Also, this makes it easy for me to check while at a store if I already have a copy of the video or not. Be it a TV show or movie.

Ha, I tend to buy the same ones again, by mistake. But I mostly buy used at the thrift store, so, no big deal.

It's clips like this that make me glad I've got a massive VHS, DVD and Blu-ray collection. I kept them even when these movies started showing up on streaming services because I'm sentimental. Now that I know that these movies can disappear from streaming on a whim, I now have a second reason to hang onto my collection. By the way I'm happy with Blu-ray, I see no reason to upgrade to 4K, as I reckon it's overkill. The picture quality on Blu-ray is great in my opinion.

I have perfect vision --- I can tell you that Blu-ray looks great even 6 feet away from a 100" screen (W1070 projector). The idea of 4K for general home movie viewing is absurd, and ten times more so considering that 99% of people are viewing it 10 feet away from a 55" screen. P.S. To be clear, movies and video games/simulations are two very different concepts with different rules. 4K isn't near enough for high FoV immersive gaming or simulation.

It’s the sound/audio quality that blew me away and convinced me. Getting a 4k player was the best thing I ever did for my home theater. Ended up throwing in-ceilings on top and growing to a 9.2.4 Atmos system and the sound quality is so damn amazing. The picture upgrade is worth it enough for the hdr, but yea, the audio. Even its ability to upconvert, it’s all worth it

You are absolutely right that movies you own digitally or are on a streaming service can disappear....However, one problem with physical media is it breaks easily. I tried to show my son Superman II Donner Cut but my DVD was so messed up that the last 20 minutes of the movie wouldn't play. So there is a dvd that's less than 20 years old and has only been played like 10 times that already needs to be replaced.

Great points. I think there will always be people who want physical media, and people who prefer streaming exclusively. I was trying to explain to a friend all the reasons (like extras and commentary tracks) that I still buy blu rays, and he replied: “I think you care about movies more than I do.”

You are 100% correct about Cocoon. I rarely even see it on tv anymore. Which is sad because I love it.

Proud to say I own a blu-ray version of Cocoon and some other hard to find movies, but there's still a few movies I can't get a hold of. One example on top of my head is Mask with Cher and Eric Stoltz. I do own the DVD but that movie is nowhere to be found.

Cocoon is such a charming film. I’m happy to own a dvd copy, but i hope it can get a Blu Ray release someday. Wilford Brimley is an under appreciated actor for sure. Wish we could have seen him in more sci fi and horror films.

It's also important for people to make sure they have access to working players of course. The Cocoon movies used to be on UK TV really often, so people should record/rip them off TV and make digital+physical copies when they can.

This is also true of ebooks (Kindle for example). These books can be edited AFTER you've read them. Amazon claims this is to clean up bad copies but on at least one book - X-15 Diary, written by Richard Tregaskis parts about Neil Armstrong were altered from the original book. Amazon does not notify you when content in the book has changed, which is scary when you think you know what a book says - and then it doesn't.

Just yesterday i was moaning to myself that i had to buy more storage for my collection of nearly 600 dvd and bluray films and was talking with friends how difficult it is to store when you have limited space Do you throw out the case and paperwork and put them in a binder or do you buy the golders that cost £50 ( i kid you not ) for a binder that holds the paperwork as well but only holds 50 disc

Agree 100%, this is why I keep not only my movie collection but also my physical copies of video games. Id rather preserve something physically then wake up one day and realize my digital media is all gone. Like novels, there is something to holding a physical copy than looking at a digital.

Only problem with the games are they are just loading a launcher on the disc now. Some are just a code in the case now.

I completely agree with the message of this video. I'm not a big fan of Cocoon, I saw it once a long time ago. I didn't dislike it, but I never felt the need to watch it again. But if I ever do get the urge to watch it, or some other movie or a TV show I think it's incredibly important for physical copies to be available. For fans of the movie I hope there is a 4k release of Cocoon. Keep physical media alive.

This is the reason I purchase Movies & TV Shows physically and then I rip them and compress them for my media server. Right now I am trying to find a TV Show that I don't believe ever was released on DVD/Blu Ray called The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo (Then shortened to Sheriff Lobo).

About 10 years ago I got rid of a handful of my DVD’s and Blue Rays … But I made sure to keep all the ones I really loved and continue to buy some DVD’s and Blue Rays from time to time

I still have my 25th Anniversary VHS of The Exorcist and the 20th Anniversary of Animal House, as well as a DVD and Blu-Ray collection. My collection TOTALLY saved my rear-end when I moved to a new state in mid-2019. It was a new building. When I went to set up my internet connection, Spectrum kept rejecting my request to set up service, without explanation. I later found out that Spectrum had determined that the cable in this new building was BAD. It took them ONE FULL MONTH to get me internet access. During that time, the ONLY thing I had was my hard media collection, as well as some digitals on thumb drive. Don't buy on Google / KZread, either. If you leave a comment on a video and someone doesn't like it and reports it, they will tell you that they deleted an offensive comment. They don't say WHAT comment, but what they DO give you is a threat that they will delete your entire Google account, including all of your digital "purchases."

@@treelineresearch3387 I've been blocked by many channels other socials for doing that. I won't learn, I will continue to help people avoid those obnoxious things. Also, in return for the blocks, I stop watching their content and blacklist their channels, therefore stop sharing their content too. This also allows time for me to discover other creators that aren't shills for corps.

You raise very good points about the value of physical media. I too like different versions. My laserdisc version of Star Wars may still come in handy. Some of George Lucas's improvements really annoy me. The new version has the Millennium Falcon taking off by rising up, then zooming away. I prefer the simplicity of the original straight-line escape into space. On a practical note, I like the disc extras plus the ease of subtitles and FF/rewind with discs.

I still have my VHS trilogy box set, from before those dumb changes Lucas did. I need to transfer them to DVD-R before the tapes disintegrate.

I have the Star Wars Trilogy Definitive Collection on LaserDisc the THX box set. I put it on layaway at the video store in the mall I worked at while going to school. It was $250.00 in 1993. The Box, book, and all the disc are still like new.

​@nater86zx it would actually be easier to copy the laserdiscs since those are easier to find in widescreen and have absolutely zero copy protection. Or find the 2006 dvd that's basically the 1993 boxset Unless you're really attached to your personal vhs set.

I also have the 2006 DVD sets with the original versions, but remember that they were designed to be played on tube TVs in letterbox format, with black bars above and below. The video squished into the middle does not have good resolution. (Edit: my video would look better had I used S-video).

I have had this experience with several favorite movies. White Palace and Cold Fever come to mind.

I love having all my favorite movies on physical media. I can watch them whenever I want, don't have to worry about what streaming service may or may not have them, and I can loan them to friends

I have a copy of Cocoon on dvd. It’s on the 20th century fox collection as well (something that is good to have now that Disney has its mits on the film vault). I have been collecting physical media since the VHS days and I’m not stopping any time soon. Streaming has its limitations and it will never look as good as a 4K.

This is why, no matter what they do, piracy will never die. Too many movies are now only available on super rare VHS or Laserdisc yet you can share it with anyone with a digital rip. I hope everyone has there pegleg and eyepatch stored away for the future since they are no longer making Blu-rays after next year.

I'm one of those few, who has digitized some of the older media VHS & LaserDisc media in my collection - just in case for some unknown reason it is rendered useless, like laserrot on my LDs or mold on my VHS tapes. And, of course, I've digitized those hard-to-get editions of certain movies, where a newer release has been altered for, say, copyright reasons. An example of this, although not a movie, is the old 1998 run of CHARMED. I managed to get the first batch of DVDs featuring the original main theme "How Soon is Now?" performed by Love Spit Love, which now on streaming services has been replaced by an instrumental generic theme song similar in style. I'm guessing - since Love Spit Love's version is a cover version - that there might have been copyright issues preventing streaming services from using the original theme song.

That’s just because it’s moved to UHD/4k blu ray. You’ll still be able to get physical media. Just get a better player. Your 4k OLED (and sound system particularly) will thank you

I was delighted at your mention of The Abyss but i have one comment about it, one thing you missed... There was a second release of The Abyss 3 years after the theatrical release -- the Special Edition. it has restored and re-integrated deleted scenes including an entire subplot that radically changes the tone of the movie, and honestly really improves it. I've never found it on streaming or digitally anywhere, only as LaserDisc or DVD releases which are both VERY hard to find.

I remember watching “No Escape” on Laserdisc because it was the first time I’d seen Laserdisc!

I do own a Blu-ray with commentary, extras etc of *Strange Days* and had it for 2 years now from K.Bigelow (Cameron). Got it from Amazon DE. But you made a great point about so many movies we loved in the 80s and 90s. Heck, even from the 70s. Nice video 👍

The physical world matters. Too much is being lost to the digital world. Media is just a small piece.

There is a group of films that even won Oscars that are impossible to get, for example, The Piano with Anna Paquin, and The English Patient. The problem with optical media is that oxygen oxidizes them and eventually destroys them, I have CDs that I originally bought in the 80's that are now unusable. Personally, I have a hard drive with the movies I love and acquire them as much as possible.

I keep all my physical copies of movies (and games and music CD's). I have my copy of Coccon still. 😊 What is the orchestral song you played at the beginning of the video please?

I completely agree with the premise of owning physical media, for all the reasons mentioned here, however don't worry, there are several copies of Cocoon available on blu-ray. I found many on Amazon US & UK.😉

You could also download movies on a thumb drive or digital hard drive.

I’ve long had a soft spot for Cocoon since I saw it in the cinema aged 14 back in the day… It’s absolutely true what you say about physical media. Hopefully people will realise this and return to buying BluRay - as well as CD’s etc.

My local library has it. Going to make myself a copy, it's one of the few movies I don't have in my collection

I have the first on DVD but I'm struggling to find the sequel on DVD in the UK. There's only a combo DVD pack of both being sold in places such as HMV

There are still VHS tapes I watch on occasion because of obscurity and outright unavailability including the little known Vietnam war film Platoon Commander (I also have the book, as well). I own several movies on DVD I would suspect would be hard to find like Paths of Glory and Grapes of Wrath. Sure, more "useful" items could be on my book case, but you said it best that we as owners of original physical media are indeed custodians. Man, how I wish my mother didn't get rid of my Star Wars VHS box set from my childhood. Right to the old folks home with her!

Do you mean Platoon Leader with Michael Dudikoff? If so, I loved that movie as a kid and I recently stumbled onto a VHS copy in a second-hand store.
