So it does 10,000 pounds pretty good? How does it do going up and down hill? Especially long pulls up hills? May 03 7.3 3.55 gears is rated for 9100. I’m trying to decide on upgrading everything to tow 9100 pounds or be alright with 7000 pounds because of the trailers I’m leaking at. If you tell me it pulls good enough at 10k pounds I think I’ll go that route. Thanks

Is the 5R10 transmission really that big a deal compared to the 4 speed? You seem to go through a lot of trouble and expense to get that upgrade when possible. Is it that it gives an overdrive thereby improving fuel economy? The 4 speed is strong enough for a stock 5.4 isn't it? {especially for a vehicle no longer hauling heavy loads as a work truck} Also if the F550 front axle is 3" wider, even with the Sterling in the rear, doesn't that make the front axle wider than the rear? I thought the Sterling was only an inch wider than the standard rear axle.
@ujointoffroad14 күн бұрын
Yes, the 5R110 is worth it. In hindsight we should have gone with a closer year but as I stated, hard to find what we needed and also the reason we don;t do this often. The 5R110 is MUCH strong and longer lasting than the 4R75 the van came with and can be converted to 4wd w/o a tear down. The front axle is wider than the rear, not a problem. The Sterlings are several inches wider than the front axle depending on the year. Another # adding to the width of this particular rig is that the wheels have 3.5" of backspacing.

Also good luck on the wiring… keeping an eye on this build for a whole bunch of reasons. After Justin is done with my van in Colorado im going to be trying to fab my own rear bumper with an integrated high clearance hitch like that and a step… and also some heavy trimming/mod on the rear rocker panels to improve the departure angle on my EB for some of those “gatekeeper” obstacles on these trails out west. My van on 37s should end up living somewhere between your beautiful DD that you don’t wanna scratch the paint and damage the body, and this “turd” van that you plan to beat on. Just want to go places those 4wd and AWD eurovan guys aren’t willing or able to go. Keep the content coming as you can 🤙🏽
