    As long as you didn’t get lapped, that is always the goal! 😅 opps I spoke too soon - I’m now watching past the 32 lap mark and I see Steve/Beano got ya! Love how polite you are when passing “Cheers!” And the occasional dirty word is appropriate! This was an edge of my seat thrill the whole time!

    Has anyone tried building a streamliner for 2, 3, 4... riders? It should be much easier to break world records then. They have 4 people in a bobsleigh at the winter Olympics.

    I'm sure it took a lot of time, effort and expertise to fabricate that impressive faring. I wonder whether anyone building their own velomobiles/streamliners has considered using a stiff safety cage wrapped with transparent plastic sheets (stretchy, like cling film, but thicker to cope with the air flow) for all-round visibility, reduced weight and ease of replacement following mishaps?

    Gosh that was close! Well done for a well deserved 2nd place. As we don't know or get to see the effort Steve is putting in and his performance stats (other than managing to stay in front) everything is conjecture. My 2-penneth is that Steve & Beano are "one"; he has been riding Beano on every one of these tracks for a long time and possibly has an innate "feel" for the best line into and out of each and every turn and that helps him enormously.

    You've gotta work on staying glued to the butt of Beano. As soon as you lose the aerodynamic benefit of Steve cutting the air in front of you you have to work every bit as hard as he does. He is probably cunning enough that he will put himself in the red a bit early so that he can drop you and not have to drag you around. Have you ever done any tuft testing on Woodstock? To me Beano looks to have a narrower and closer to a naca profile upper when you look at the Velo Ads video SUPERFAST STREAMLINER CHAMPION "BEANO"-ME AND MY BIKE. The bottom half of Woodstock versus Beano looks quite similar in plan view but it's front on that makes the big difference.

  • @russellbridge
    @russellbridge27 күн бұрын

    See my race at Hillingdon last year in Snoopy - I couldn't detect any aero benefit in being tucked in behind Notso, and on reading Goro Tamai's book, some solar car teams have actually tested the cars worse when following in the slipstream of another car... And yes Beano is slightly smaller in all dimensions.

    Note to self: next time(?) make front more pointy . (Is it possible to overlay a temporary pointy nose skin on yours, to see if it improves speed? Taped on of course.) Im impressed with you're streamer, that Beano just seems the perfect bike for these circuit events though. I wonder if Steve's putting in as much effort as yourself? I bet he has a cigar mid race 😉 P.s. i wonder if an ice pack would help you fully faired guys, like the pro cyclists do to keep the core body temp down.. perhaps try it once for any performance benefits.

  • @russellbridge
    @russellbridge27 күн бұрын

    a temporary stick-on nose-job might be a good idea (although it'd be hard not to trip any laminar flow at the join) - combined with a tuft-test and power and speed data

    Why is Slash so fast you ask? I'm guessing its cornering. He seems solid in the corners, less wobble, better lines, perhaps more lean too. I would ask him some questions or ask for a go pro install on his machine so you can compare whats going on inside his and yours: 1. How much effort to steer i.e. is it bumpy or smooth? 2. Do you keep pedaling through corners? 3. What tyres and pressures does he use? 4. See what weight is on front wheel and back wheel (two scales ), to find weight distribution, with and without rider. This may give you ideas on moving the weight balance around, or adding weight even. 5. Ask him for the steering geometry, see if yours might benefit from some tweaking. Keeping speed in the corners translates to better average speed. His aerodynamics may also be better. Perhaps do some string tests on yours to check. Once you get your gloss topcoat you might find it improves speed.

    For the hotter day(s) we get in the UK, perhaps a ventisit pad, tinted lexan, and a variable diverter for the screen to divert more air to rider? Is this bike different from snoopy? Its rather nice! I expect you've thought of covers for the landing gear wheel holes, maybe another lever for those on spring loaded cables.

    I own highracer recumbent and when i test one lower highracer recumbent i find out its getting harder to control bike with lower gravity center go. This faired lowracer have to be really hard to controll since every move you made in shell will throw bike out of ballance and only fast and right measured reactions can counter imballance before it big and bike drop on any side.

    I've asked Miles Kingsbury (builder of Beano and work colleague of Steve) if they can try to get some power pedals in there this year. Miles said that they'd had power pedals in there before and Steve was doing about 225W for a race (very good for a ~60kg, 67 yr old) but I suspect he's doing a bit more than that.

    The winner is skinny as a whippet, and not young either. Man and machine in harmony. He's been riding recumbents for a long time and that one for many years. Its a great design. His bike is probably heavier than this one, so most of the time i think is made in the cornering and good aerodynamics.

  • @ranag1751

    1000 thanks for making and sharing this footage! In my opinion this is the best design ever of a fully faired recumbent bike, confirmed by the awesome racing performance of Slash and yourself. Such a pity, that there's no way to buy something like that. So I'm on the way to build my own. The bike itself already works pretty well (made of aluminium). I'm not able to handle with composite materials, but I fortunately found a used shell (bumble bike) from german racing activities in the 90s. For the landing gear I also want to copy your solution, but with bigger wheels and a slightly different activation mechanism. I wonder if it is possible to use this machine for every day commuting on flat good bicycle lanes. Do you have any experience or suggestions for this? Is this doomed to fail? Stay tuned and best regards from southern Germany.

  • @russellbridge

    Well thanks for your kind comments. Personally I wouldn't use this in traffic - visibility is quite limited and the turning lock is limited - both are rectifiable to a certain extent. But the biggest problem is that the landing gear only works on perfectly level ground - it's the same for Beano too. Three wheels solve this - ie a velomobile!

    You did a very nice job on it, in both design and execution. That was a ton of work to build. I mean that sincerely, and I want you to understand that before you read what I say next. As top notch as that bike is, at the end of the day, you get killed by Beano every time. Is it vehicle or engine that's making the difference?

  • @russellbridge2721
    @russellbridge27212 ай бұрын

    I'd like to know that too - it's infuriating!!! Hopefully we can get to a track later in the year and do some roll down tests with Woodstock vs Beano vs Notso

  • @deezynar
    @deezynar2 ай бұрын

    @@russellbridge2721 Testing them together would be helpful if the test speeds are high enough to match racing speeds. The aerodynamic drag, as you certainly know, increases with speed, so the faster you run them in the test, the clearer the differences will show up. Is your bike wider or taller than Beano? And can you make doors to cover your landing gear? I'm just thinking of obvious things that I'm sure you have already considered. By my thinking, just from looking at the two bikes, I'd say that they were pretty equally matched. My thought is that you two should be neck and neck. But on race day, he laps you in longer races. That really bugs me. And if it bugs me, I fully understand how it must be infuriating to you. How does Slash take this? Is he a serious rival who's tight lipped about his rig and unwilling to reveal trade secrets? Or has he been helping you out all this time?
