BHPC Hillingdon fast race 1 - 30mins in Snoopy streamliner. Oct '23

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Video taken on a gopro inside the shell of my fully faired streamliner Snoopy.
A great race, I came third to Slash in Beano, and Liam in Notso.
The plan was to stick like glue to Liam and get him on the last lap. The plan worked until
- 19:50 Slash laps us and Liam chases Slash
- 26:00 I catch back up to Liam
- 31:40 Liam powers away at the start of the last lap...bah!
228W average for 30.6mph average speed

Thank you for sharing this video. Holy smokes you guys are fast. It must be tough to be cranking at 110 rpms, heart pounding at 168 bpm, going 33+ mph and still getting lapped by an "old" dude :19 minutes into a race. 😜 Unbelievable effort. WOW!!! Hat tip to all three of you.

Imho he is playing and using you. He has higher short time power output and he is keping your wheel when he feels tired. In corners you are more stable and your line is better so you are faster. You can produce more contious power and gain distance over him. You just need to ride your own line and your own tempo and not let him play you with acceleration and especially dont let him control you in the last 2 rounds because its his win. On the other hand he might be much more stronger but than why would he not let the whole field far behind .. so I would say dont play his game. You are doing great. Respect! This race and your bike is like a dream :-) Please more. Can you ride it safely on the streets ?

We'd be honored to have you guys racing with us - come and do the Worlds next year - the BHPC are hosting the World HPV Championships - Fri 16th to Sun 18th August 2024 at Betteshanger in Kent. I'm sure if a few of you US guys were to come over we could sort some fast bikes for you between us all :)

Excellent ride there Russell, and thanks for sharing - especially with the telemetry. Very helpful to get a better appreciation of the physics involved. I echo what another comment says about how come Beano is so consistently quick? It cannot be purely aero, but having met the rider/driver, maybe it's a combination of power/weight ratio, and experience. Regards Mark in the UK

Yeah, but maybe the batteries in the Beano are 5GW and the motor is well hidden ;-) It must be so frustrating for Snoopy & Notso.

Good effort Russell, was nice catching up at the race. I was having a think as to why Slash is so much quicker, are you running a smaller chainring than him?

  • @russellbridge

    @russellbridge

    9 ай бұрын

Good to see you too John. No my front chainring is bigger - I've got a direct drive so it's an 85T to an 11-28T cassette over a 23T Terracycle power idler. Beano has a mid/crossover drive so I'd guess Beano has a 56-ish-T to a cassette, and then a secondary drive down to the front wheel. My theory was that my direct drive would be more efficient, and I can't see why it wouldn't be. I wasn't running out of gears either - I've got ratios to spare, I prefer a higher cadence esp with 145mm cranks.

@@russellbridge Yes! Yes, indeed. I would also be annoyed if I were in your shoes. I'm annoyed and I just watch your videos. The Beano effect is powerful and mysterious. Humanity needs to know the answer to this question. My guess is that it's mostly aero. I'm thinking there must be something subtle about Beano's shape (& size?) that produces an exaggerated result.

@@russellbridge I watched a video about Valentino Rossi that made me think about this situation. He rode for Honda and Honda claimed credit for Rossi's victories. Rossi was angered by that and signed with Yamaha just to show that he was the variable that got the victories, not the machine. He won championships with Yamaha, beating the Hondas. I bring that up because in motorcycle racing, the bike engine makes it go, but how it is operated still makes a huge difference. Another commenter here mentioned that riding skill, not physical fitness, just the handling skill, is another variable that plays a role in what you are doing. I'm not trying to pile on insults, just mulling over what gives the Slash / Beano combo that much of an advantage. It's freaky. Anyway, you have fans out here who want to see the gap cut to zero, or less.

Beano is noticeably smaller in every dimension, and Slash has raced it for many years, knows it inside out and knows over many years of racing the foibles of each track. Both Russ and Liam given time the age difference and increasing experience will get closer. Slash maybe old and skinny but he's still a powerful and gritty rider.@@deezynar

Yes that makes sense, bit dumb of me to think that such a well engineered machine wouldn’t have a way for the rider to perform such a basic task as coming to a complete stop without toppling over and I guess I asked the question without really thinking it through- but thanks for answering genuinely and without tacking on the words “you idiot” at the end!

@@Drewsta4 No worries hahaha. Unfamiliarity is an often overlooked reason that people respond to negatively online. Streamliners are incredibly efficient and can be fast (89mph is the world record). I'm actually planning a streetable streamliner now, and will start constructing it soon.
