  In Reality, if a 728i is in good shape und properly maintenanced, it will need around 8-8.5 seconds to 100km/h, which is reasonable and fast enough for a car of this class and age. The V8's are not that much faster and even the V12 is not particulary fast when compared to all the newer upper class cars. If we take into consideration the availability of spare parts and know-how in the future aswell as the simpler and smaller design of the engine, it needs to be concluded that the M52 is in fact the best choice for the E38. I won't argue why Diesel engines should not be fitted into a upper class vehicle with a high expectation for comfort.

  FYI the M10B18 you listed is an 318 engine (1.8) and not a 1.6. There is and 316 with the m10b16 and a 316i with m40b16, the 318i got m10b18 and m40b18.

  The 316 in the video has the 1.8 liter M10. Until 1987, the BMW e30 316 and 318i had the same M10 engines with 1.8 liter displacement, at least in Germany. However, the BMW 316 had a carburetor with 90 hp and the 318i an injection with 105 hp. I drove a 1984 BMW 316 back then, which had an M10b18 engine with carburetor and 1.8 liters. Only from 1987 until the end of production did the second series get new engines, where the 316i also had a displacement of 1.6 liters. There are country-specific exceptions, but in Germany the models were offered and sold as described above. Until 1987 in Germany the 316 with the M10b18, 90 hp and carburetor and the 318i with the M10b18 with 105 hp and fuel injection.

  Ford's 1.8 td not on the list? 😢 It's been (ab)used on many a construction site all over Europe, often reaching a crazy high mileage without issues. All with a simple single-geometry turbo and no dual mass flywheel (which like to mess up so often in the 1.9 tdi)
