    Thanks for the review Keith! I decided to go for it and I LOVE this printer. It’s exactly what I wanted- a more entry level photography printer, with amazing reds, a bigger color gamut, a large format that isn’t freaking GIANT and the print quality or “dot grain” is so much smoother than my last printer. Ink costs have been the only negative for me, but luckily I do relatively low volume, as what I’m printing is so small many will fit on one page so I can get away with a couple full color sheets a week (and some other home type printing). But I wouldn’t get this if you do large volume printing as the ink will get expensive fast- Epson ET 8550/8500 might be a better fit if you don’t HAVE to have the red ink like I did. But I print brightly colored graphics and no matter how many papers/media settings/printer settings I’ve tried, I haven’t ever been happy with any of the lighter bright reds mixed with magenta/yellow ink ..mostly I’ve found that the more yellow you add to the Magenta, the more dull it appears…so you kind of have to go with a fairly dark red with low yellow content to get vibrant reds. Not anymore! 🎉 Red ink would also be great for more realistic skin tones. But most people aren’t red ink obsessed like I am lol…. If it doesn’t matter to you, I’d check out Keith’s reviews on the ET 8500/8550👍

    Yes, but for most people, ignore that and just follow the screen instructions... ;-) If you know about such things, you are well above the level of familiarity I'm assuming for this video ;-) For basic tests, I'll normally use the paper as suggested in the printer manual, unless I'm creating media types or always use a specific paper, which is different from the defaults for the media setting I'm using. Once you start getting into the detailed stuff, it becomes very printer dependent.

  • @KeithCooper
    @KeithCooper7 сағат бұрын

    No limitations other than that imposed by the crop - the subject is addressed in the book. For example: 10mm of shift shows much more apparent effect on a crop sensor than it does on a larger one. It means that a left/centre/right shift multi-shot panoramic is narrower. It also means that you need shorter focal lengths to get wide angle views in a single shot. Lenses like the Laowa 15mm shift are excellent on APS-C

    I don't believe it will go that full length - check the specs [mac and pc are different] A matte heavyweight paper of at least 240gsm. It needs to be an inkjet paper though - there are not many papers in 13" though. 24" slit will do 12" width, or cuts from a 44" roll

  • @KeithCooper
    @KeithCooper9 сағат бұрын

    There is nothing from Epson - You will need to put any such inks into a brand new uninitialised printer [goodbye warranty] For third party inks, look for pigment ink sets - however, even they are likely to need an inkjet compatible paper. There may be other inks which would go in the printer, but unless you are doing your own colour management and profiling, results are unpredictable. People have put all sorts of inks through this printer, but the chances of killing the printer stone dead in days/weeks are not insignificant. My testing of this is limited - Most printers i get are loans, so manufacturers are unlikely to appreciate printers returned with some unknown colour goop in them ;-)

    I have got the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, which is a great printer. However it has 9 catridges that now cost £55 each. I find that this is far too expensive. I know that some people are now using compatable cartridges for the Epson Stylus Pro but following past experience, I am wary of non genuine ink. To reduce costs for A4 printing I bought a Canon Pixma G650 Ink Tank Printer, which I find is really good and is cheap to run. With the right paper mono is also very good. I do have a need to also print quite a lot of A3 prints and am looking for an A3 version of the G650. However, it seem that the only printer that currently fits that role is the Epson ET- 8550. Come on Canon an A3 version of the Pixma G650 would be ideal.

It's not starting up automatically when I start tethered capture in LR and there is no way to start it from the plugin manager. It works on it's own and automated with a watched folder in LR, though. But you still have to switch between the two apps. Hmmh...

    I got it working in LrC - I did have to go in and trash the prior Tether Pro plugin, per the Note *1 item in the install instructions for the GFX100/50 cameras. If that is installed, you can see where it is by selecting it in the Plugin Manager in LrC - that will show the path to it. AFAICT, you only get a floating bar with basic info and shutter button, so you still want the App itself open for Live View.

    Another alternative is what I devised for myself. I print one, 4x6, adjust my laptop monitor so it matches that print as close as possible. Then I edit the photos until happy with what I see and then print my images at whatever size I want up to my printer's max of 11x17. WYSIWYG!. This works with my inkjets and results from commercial printers match very closely because most of the industry is using similar standards. Until I started doing this I was wasting ink, paper and money spent on prints and books. Since I started doing this I've had no problems at all.

    How would you suggest printing off the test print you supply without being affected by the monitor calibration or software? Print it directly from Say windows and using default paper profiles? ( I have calibrated monitor and custom Hahnemule paper profiles). Should the test print be compared with a test print from a professional print version?

  • @KeithCooper
    @KeithCooper2 күн бұрын

    The test image should be printed with exactly the same workflow as you would for any image you wanted to print. Monitor settings have nothing to do with it. If you print your photos from 'windows with default profiles', then do that. If you print using a particular bit of software, use that. Just use this image instead of one of your own. Read the details on the download page as to what to look for www.northlight-images.co.uk/printer-test-images/ There is no physical 'master print' to compare it with

    I am a digital artist. I have been making digital art for quite a while now. So i want to expand my work to physical prints also mainly limited editions , A3+ max size. I have looked into several printere and narrowed down to these : Dye based :Canon Pro 200, Canon IP8770, Epson ET 8550 pigment based : Canon Pro 300 and Epson SC P700 For IP8770 i cant find any videos or reviews. Its quite affordable as compared to all other options but uses dye based ink cartridges Which one will be suitable. I will be using fine art matt paper 270 to 300 gsm. I have talked to some of my artist friends and they suggest using archival quality printer and paper.

  • @KeithCooper
    @KeithCooper2 күн бұрын

    For IP8770 - it's too old - not one I've covered even in my main written reviews [there are only a few lower end printers I cover] It all depends on quality and the market you are in. Pigment inks are what I'd prefer for sales [pigment and archival are good marketing terms - add in 'Giclee', if your market wants it ;-) ] One point I'd make though, which a lot of 'digital' artists discover, is that matching screens and prints is tricky, especially if you use devices like iPads, which have essentially no functional colour management. Whatever paper you use will also need an icc profile for it, and print from a proper computer. See the bit about art repro in my main et-8550 review [the written one] www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ The 8550 is my usual suggestion for people not wanting the expense/costs of the larger pigment ink printers - note the bit in the review about the importance of paper/ink choices

    Dear Cooper, Thanks for your precious informationsand reviews that I follow for years. I would like to ask for your advice on spyder print, actually. I see that on your blog that you have a review of it on BW. But I couldn't find any video of you about it. Therefore I am asking you here, if you don't mind. Let say that I am an amateur photographer, have an LG display, Epson ET 8550 printer and Mac Mini M1. I own datacolor Spyder X and to my amateur eyes it is okay. What I want have is ICC profiles for different cheaper papers which will have acceptable color accuracy and be used as pirnt outs on my wall or album. For example Kodak papers are much cheaper than EPSON ones where I live. As I cannot find icc profiles of many papers that are sold here, than I need a color profiler hardware, I suppose. Most of these devices are too expensive to own for an amateur photographer. Up to my knowledge sypderprint is the cheapest one. My question is if it is worth have one or just go with trial and error printing many examples? Thanks Cem

  • @KeithCooper
    @KeithCooper2 күн бұрын

    The best cheap one for paper profiles is the i1Studio/Colormunki/ccStudio. My suggestion is to buy paper from a supplier who will make/supply profiles - Kodak branded papers are not somewhere I'd go - they often perform poorly in Canon and Epson printers [based on past testing] Maybe different now, but I'd not use them [it's Keith BTW - no one has called me by my surname since I was at school... ;-) :-) ]

I'm really pleased with the way it performs and don't have an intention of changing it but have a philosophical question. Has inkjet printer quality plateaued with regard to use by an art photographer? We have been in the marginal gains area with digital cameras for about a decade now (if you aren't into sports or videography). Is the same true of the mid ground of inkjet printing? Perhaps you've already covered this.

    Keith, You write - "...teleconverter as just enlarging the lens image circle, rather than a focal length multiplier." Does this mean that the teleconverter in operation increases the image circle (for example, the diameter of the lens image circle is 51 mm, multiply by 1.4 = 71.4 mm.) Or is this just a mathematical indicator. In the end, we will still get a circle from TC x1.4 51 mm. Why am I asking this question? Will the Canon TC x1.4 give us a sufficient image circle for the Fuji GFX system when installing any Canon lens on the GFX via adapters - Lens EF+TC x1.4+EF-GFX? I don't have a Canon TC x1.4, and the GFX TC x1.4 is not suitable for these experiments.(Google Transletter) Eduard.

  • @KeithCooper
    @KeithCooper2 күн бұрын

    It's not that simple - note that in this video, I'm specifically talking about TCs with tilt and shift and the original camera. A somewhat different topic. I have no idea, for example, whether the increased image circle will actually make it out of the back of the converter for a bigger sensor. For your use, it is effectively changing the focal length. This is not something I've tested/calculated, so no answer... :-)

    How can I disable et18100 color management ? I have Sonoma and in PRINT driver is’nt this option ? Do you disable printer color management in drivers?

  • @KeithCooper

    Have you installed the airprint version of the driver? That will do that...

    Maybe it’s a Sonoma issue with drivers…

    Have you tried printing with Epson Print Layout [EPL] it's always my first test with a known good test image and profiles

  • @KeithCooper
    @KeithCooper2 күн бұрын

    If EPL won't see the printer or work properly, it's likely an incorrect driver install [it matters not one bit that you downloaded the 'latest' driver] Delete all printer instances and go to epson.sn - do a proper setup and read ALL the instructions carefully. Every time I've seen an incorrect install, it's been USER ERROR - yes even when I've done it ;-)

    Hi Keith, I am happy I stumbled upon your channel. Thank you for sharing your experience. I have a quick question; calibrating your monitor for printing you set 100 cd/m² if I didn’t get you wrong, what if the pictures will never be printed and only end up at web pages or will only be watched on monitors like mobile devices or various LCD monitors? Still the correct setting should be 100 cd/m²? The default is 120 cd/m² for many... Thanks in advance.

    I use 100 partly because my general office lighting is not bright and I do a fair bit of print. 120 is fine for general photo use. My monitor has a 'bright sRGB' setting which I sometimes use to get a feel for web/phone use, but of course, such a huge change completely throws your visual adaption for a bit [time to make a coffee] The two monitors in my videos are deliberately set to match the video lighting [~4000K], so they look reasonable in the videos - they are useless for actual work ;-)

    See this thread at Printer Knowledge for an example and some aspects www.printerknowledge.com/threads/epson-xp-970-aftermarket-cartridges-colour-issues.16478/ Some cheap inks fade and drift colours very quickly - weeks For myself it's primarily about printer warranty, the need to make all new printer profiles and longevity - not immediately obvious
