    Love your book, it’s both great reference material and enjoyable to just read for fun at the same time. Out of all my kit, I always seem to come back to my Pentax 67 45mm attached to my EOS R via a Fotodiox TS adapter, mainly for still life shots. It’s just so versatile.

    Hi Keith ! First of all thanks for all your videos and articles about printing and especially Tilt / Shift lenses. I have your book and learned a lot about T/S and it peaked my interest in reading the suggested paper “Focusing the View Camera”. Between the two, I increased my understanding of how T/S works and doesn’t work in increasing depth of field and the effect on the Plane of Focus. Perhaps you could do some teaching videos by ‘marrying’ the practical concepts about depth of field / focal plane presented in “Focusing the View Camera” and your Book. Also discussions on ‘how wide’ a lens can be used for Landscape with Tilt before disadvantages outweigh advantages. Your videos, articles and book have pretty well fully covered the use of Shift, so we just need some useful ideas where Tilt might benefit Landscape within a range of Focal Lengths and the limits of how wide to go. A BIG ASK, I know.

    I bought the book maybe a year ago. Have a Rokinon TS lens with the FTZ adapter for a Nikon Z body...l and never used it. Thanks for reminding me that I probably should. Now I have to read the book again.

    Excellent book - can highly recommend. I use shift a lot in landscape, tilt needs a lot more practice 😆🤪!

    I appreciate your use of T/S perspective correction, not a lot of contemporary sources on that, especially in video format.

    Thanks - I'm just doing a quick video about some of what I've seen in Canon patents, with how some might be of use in actual lenses/cameras we see

    I've got a lovely John Blakemore print where he swings the vertical plane of focus through the trees in Derby Arboretum. Another use for shift is to allow you to change the relationship between foreground and background.

    Yes - I need to go back there. One of my earliest paying jobs was to produce a lot of photos of it, but they wanted me to go in mid March - A challenge IIRC

    @@KeithCooper It's been extensively replanted and maintained since then. It's particularly magic when misty. I'm a bit too much of a formalist; trees are those things that get in the way when you photograph buildings. Must work on that :)

    I hate those toy perspectives as much as I hate ICM. I buy expensive, sharp lenses because I want "detail" in my images. Also, FWIW, I used to use back tilt on a 4x5 for landscapes all the time.

    Yes - 'creative' camera shake [I won't give it the benefit of a name] ... not a fan ;-) Effective use of tilt for landscape is something I do want to cover more for use with T/S lenses. That may have to wait until the finances allow me a 30mm TS lens for the GFX100S...

    There's apparently a patent application by Canon for tilting sensors which I guess would theoretically make any lens attached to it " tilt ". I doubt however if they would ever have a shift function given the sensor would also have to move several millimetres in every direction but who knows 🧐

  • @KeithCooper

    @KeithCooper

    Yes, I've just made a video discussing all that but not due for publishing yet... The one in the patent is singularly useless for any normal photographic use :-)

    @@KeithCooper Yeah agreed, I suspect it's one of those " just in case " patents rather than something that would ever be released. Frankly such a tilting sensor camera would be even more " niche " than even tilting lenses are. Given part of the high cost of tilt/shift lenses is down to relatively low market demand ( as well as manufacturing complexity) I expect Canon would only be able to sell a small handful of such cameras, no doubt at an exorbitant price that nobody would be willing to pay anyway 😋

    The example in the patent looks very much aimed at security camera use, where the tilt is set up for specific applications.

    I can thoroughly recommend Keith's book, it explains the use of Tilt/Shift lenses in easy but concise language. Having spent decades photographing architecture without a tilt/shift lens, I am keen to use one (mine's a Nikon PC-E 24mm F3.5) although I must say that straightening the verticals on all buildings sits uncomfortably as it is not what the eye sees and can give the effect of the building splaying out at the top even though the verticals are indeed vertical, maybe a little convergence would be beneficial? Also, I have noted that there are a great many shift lens converters available for all sorts of mounts but not the Nikon F mount that has always puzzled me.

    Thanks. The full correction becomes more a potential issue as you go wider. A 15mm shift lens on [small] medium format takes a lot of care. There is also the fact that even if it looks a little off, my architectural clients expect it. What you call beneficial, might be seen as 'sloppy' by a client ;-) All about what/who the image is being created for. It actually is what the eye sees until you look up ;-) The adapter issues are related to the limitations of the F mount - it is relatively narrow and has a relatively long flange distance. The Z mount is the exact opposite and absolutely superb for adapting lenses.

    T/Shift lenses vs Leica M lenses + crop - What is your opinion, which is better?

  • @KeithCooper

    @KeithCooper

    Better for me, and for my types of photography? - no comparison, you cannot 'fake' tilt and I much prefer to know my composition at the time of taking the photo. Others may well like all the Leica stuff - I'd personally have no use for it at all, other than sell it to them, to buy kit of more direct utility ;-) :-) That's just for me though...
